Willard and Dibs debate if Jed York can recover from his arrest.
Transcript
00:00I mean, this is, this feels a little, I don't know if mean-spirited is the right thing, but
00:07remember this? This is a back and forth with Jed York and Lowell Cone. Back in the days of the
00:17departure of Harbaugh and... No, not Harbaugh.
00:26Yeah. Go on. Yes. Yes. Yes. Harbaugh. Okay. But yeah, all of the departures that were, that
00:35were happening with the 49ers at the time. And I think that basically the idea is the
00:40questioning at a certain point kind of got to, well, if, if, if we're cleaning house
00:45here, what the hell are you still doing here? This was specifically after the departure of
00:51Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke together. Okay. So it was Baalke and Kelly and Harbaugh was
00:55in the recent rear view. Kelly came after Tom Sula who came after Harbaugh. So there was
00:59just three straight bad years. Yeah. Here it is. Jed, you dismissed your general manager
01:05and coach because they didn't reach certain performance standards. That's part of it.
01:11Okay. Let's stick to that part. Why shouldn't you be dismissed or reassigned for the same
01:16reasons? Look, again, like nothing I'm going to say is going to be satisfactory, but nothing
01:21I'm going to say is going to be satisfactory. And again, we're going to be judged on what
01:25we do and what we accomplish. We haven't accomplished enough. I own this football team. You don't dismiss
01:31owners. I'm sorry that that's the facts and that's the case, but that's the fact. And I'm
01:36going to do everything that I can to get this right. This isn't about a business and running
01:40an operation to make money. We're making sure that we're doing everything that we can to reestablish
01:45this culture. It's not an easy decision to dismiss a head coach and a general manager,
01:49especially people that have, you know, a lot of time left on their deals. But I think that's
01:53the best thing for us. And that's what we need to do in order to get us back to where
01:56we want
01:57to be. Let me say this first. The first thing I want to say is that's in 2017 and largely
02:03from
02:03that moment forward, he has done a really good job of recovering his name and repositioning
02:11the organization as a successful one. So I will give him that credit, but it is time
02:17for an addendum to his famous statement. You don't dismiss owners. He's right, but they
02:23can sure dismiss themselves. And that is also correct. If you look at the history of this
02:30position, whether it would be Donald Sterling, Dan Snyder, Jerry Richardson, or anyone else,
02:36and I am not putting him in that kind of a boat as of yet. But he, he has put
02:43himself
02:43in a boat and the boat is rolling through rough waters.
02:47Right. And you could even look at his uncle, Eddie DiBartolo, who ostensibly dismissed himself
02:52because he, he caught a felony charge and that was going to be the way that went. And I'm just
02:58looking at the timeline after that quote that you, you just play that Grandy alerted us to
03:04a month later, they hired Kyle Shanahan and they hired John Lynch. And so a month after the,
03:10you don't dismiss owners, he came out and did something that has actually had lasting success
03:15where Kyle and John now are embarking on what year nine of actually year 10 of being very successful.
03:22Yep. Absolutely. Um, 888-957-9570. Grandpa, daddy is on the line. What's up GPD?
03:32Hey, how are you guys doing, man? Pretty good.
03:36Oh, well, I'm just waiting to go into the ophthalmology department because my right eye is kind of
03:44messing with me, but you know what they say, man, getting up late for the faint of heart.
03:49Yep. No doubt. True statement.
03:54But I just want to, you know, listen, man, you know, we're going to need to, uh, apparently,
04:03uh, we don't have great, uh, cell service at the ophthalmologist, right? So we'll get you back
04:08grandpa, daddy. Yeah. Let's see if we can find a different spot. Let's go to Corey in daily city.
04:13Hi, Corey. Thank you for calling. What's up.
04:16Oh, thanks for having me. Hey, hoping grandpa, daddy gets better at that ophthalmologist. Hoping,
04:21hoping. Um, but Hey, with the, with the whole York, uh, thing, this is just my opinion. Um,
04:27I don't see coach Shanahan, uh, going into a game with that on his mind, you know, Hey guys,
04:33you know, it's going to be a tough one with what happened with our, with our owner. I think the
04:36biggest thing that he's going to have to say, it's like, like someone had said earlier, you know,
04:40his children, yeah, his wife, I mean, what's the situation was reversed, but I think the biggest
04:44thing that Mr. York is going to have to face is the joke, the humiliation and just being in the
04:49news. So I don't see him losing, you know, the ownership, but the jokes and the embarrassment
04:54are coming. Um, there's no question, Corey. And, and I'm with you again. I think this is an
05:01organizational issue. It's not a football issue. And some might say, hold on a second,
05:05those things overlap in all kinds of ways. And obviously they do. Uh, but, but I feel
05:10very confident that Corey is right. Um, but no player is really going to think much about
05:16this at all. Certainly not within the framework of their game day job. Sure. Is it on their
05:23mind today? I would, it's an off day. They're back to work tomorrow. Is there going to be an
05:30internal memo or eight about how to handle the fans and the media and whatnot? Uh, as
05:36they, as they go to practice tomorrow and then head to Vegas for, for a Thursday preseason
05:41game. Sure. Sure. The absolutely is going to be that, but I don't think there's any functional
05:47football issue to this whatsoever, even in the future, unless you are somebody, and I'm just
05:52going to use the name Tim Tebow, because we know that he is a deeply religious person. If you
05:58are cut from that cloth and you look at this situation, are you not going to want to be a
06:02free agent because the owner attempted to spend $140 on some extracurriculars? I mean,
06:09that might possibly be a thing, but I don't think that that would be the norm. It's more of the
06:14exception than it would be. I think the norm in free agency and these football players by and large
06:19are cut from one cloth, which is the game is very violent. My career is short and I want to
06:26make
06:26every dollar that I possibly can. So I don't know if you look at any player in a situation and
06:31they
06:31think, Oh, I don't want to sign there now, now that their owner has gone out and done this. So
06:36in terms of the football ramifications, I don't think that there are any, but in the court of
06:42public opinion and in public relations, this is definitely a stain that is going to be tough for
06:48him to shake. That I agree with. Yeah. I listen. Um, I, I would think that it's pretty hard
06:53to play in the NFL and be approved, uh, when it comes to issues that surround things like this.
07:03And I don't want that to come off as crass or anything like that. I'm just saying these are large
07:08organizations, um, with a lot of people. It's, uh, by and large, when you're talking about the locker
07:14room, it's a lot of very young people with a lot of resource, um, from all kinds of walks of
07:22life.
07:23And Oh, by the way, they have been trained to be half a cup of crazy with what they're doing.
07:31They have trained to be highly aggressive. So my point in saying that is not to excuse
07:38anything at all. My point in saying that is, I don't think that these players, um, if you are,
07:44you bring up Tim Tebow, for example, if in some way your morality clause as a human being makes it
07:53so that you just cannot even be around anything going on that involves some funny stuff,
08:00I think you can have a hard time being on a national football league team.
08:03Probably. Yep. Yep. That's what I think.
08:05Well, when you get into like some of the other nefarious to use your word stuff that goes on,
08:11whether it's, you know, concussion reporting that actually happens or doesn't happen. And,
08:15you know, sometimes you get a player who's injured and they get an injection that is,
08:20you know, medically probably not the best way to go ahead and rehab and recover. Yes. The,
08:25the national football league and pro football in and of itself, there are a lot of things that
08:29are done just to, you know, get back out there and get back on the field. So an owner stepping
08:35outside and he didn't step outside his marriage. Let's be fair about that.
08:39Filed for divorce in May.
08:41Filed in May. So he wasn't really cheating on any spouse. What he was doing was a crime,
08:47a misdemeanor, two misdemeanors, in fact, and it's less about the crime and it's more about the
08:53embarrassment and the shade that it casts upon the organization.
08:57Sure. And, and, and look, I think, um, uh, the issue with him as a father is a much bigger
09:03one
09:03today than, than him as a husband. That's kind of just the way I look at this. If I'm him
09:08today and
09:10no, I cannot relate on any level, but if I try to put myself in that head space, that's, that
09:17would
09:17actually be my first thought. My first thought would be about, uh, my role as a father and the
09:26example that I've just set for, uh, for two young boys, even beyond the example. For me, it's about
09:34like the kids going to school back in school. And so, you know, all these kids, and I think his,
09:41his sons are 14 and 12 or something like that, whatever, old enough to where their classmates
09:46have phones. And so it's going to be a thing where, you know, Oh, I read this about your dad
09:52on
09:53TMZ. And so that part of it is what kind of breaks my heart for those young men who have
09:59to deal with
10:00it. And already when you carry that name, you're already dealing with, Hey, you know, why didn't
10:05your dad go for, you know, why didn't Shannon go for a third down, you know, instead of, you know,
10:10now it's like you're dealing with the York name and you have to go to school. And it's like,
10:15this is a worldwide scandal and they have to, you know, face questions and ribbing from classmates.
10:21That's the part that really gets me. Gosh, I'm with you. That's a very uncomfortable visual that
10:29you create of it's Monday morning and this news all broke and they're heading to school
10:35like that. Then they're in middle school, which is objectively the most awkward time of human
10:41existence. It's a pretty toxic environment. Totally. And, and maybe one of them's a freshman.
10:46Good Lord. Can you imagine if someone's starting high school last week and, and now they're walking
10:52into those hall, you're already terrified. Like I just, God breaks my heart. And you're already
10:59carrying the burden of being, you know, the son of the Niner owner, unless you have a pseudonym,
11:05which I doubt that they do. And I don't even pretend to know where they go to school. And you,
11:10you back that up even a little further, Mark. And back in May, as you mentioned before,
11:16Jed York filed for divorce, which means things were probably not great among the Yorks before that.
11:23And so you get to that spot in May and it's like, yeah, you have to have that conversation.
11:28And I had that conversation with my kids when I got divorced. And luckily my youngest son was about
11:3417. And so, and my older son was like, yeah, I knew this was coming. It's like, you did not,
11:39no, nobody knew, but they at least were late teens, if not adults. But so these kids are
11:45already going through that. And then now you have this that pops up. I really feel for those young
11:50men. I really do too. I'm going to leave their names out of this for right now, but their oldest
11:53is 13, 13 years old. And that's younger one. I can't quite access how old he is. Might've been 11.
12:00I thought they were two years apart, but either way, old enough to have friends who follow this stuff
12:06and will certainly, you know, if they want, give them a hard time about it.
12:10I'm Neil in Virginia. Hi, Neil. Thank you for calling. What's up?
12:15Hey man. Um, I saw a fake story about Brandon. I you posting some, uh,
12:24Oh yeah. Okay. Well that escalated quick. I mean, when you start your call with,
12:28if I saw a fake story, I think sometimes karma jumps in and zaps your phone.
12:33It was about Brandon. I you posting something. And I actually said out in the green room, like,
12:39uh, this is a, unfortunately, this is a classic, uh, time for Brandon. I you to,
12:44to weigh in on something because as we saw when Kyle Shanahan got in his car accident,
12:50I you didn't wait too long to, to chime in with his feelings.
12:53Yeah. I mean, who knows? I don't even want to try to pretend I have any idea what Brandon's next
12:58move
12:58is going to be, but I don't think that Kyle Shanahan post went very well for Brandon.
13:04There are some, uh, Photoshopped images of IU posting on his Instagram story about this,
13:09which are not accurate. He has not posted anything. So if you see anything, no. Okay.
13:14If you see anything from my, you can, at least as of now, it is fake and Photoshop feels to
13:19me.
13:19And, and this I'm completely projecting here. So this is not, but doesn't it feel like
13:27somewhere along the road, Brandon got the message that what he was doing on social media wasn't
13:34working. He has not been signed by the commanders and they've got a game in a couple of weeks,
13:41right? It feet. And I could be guessing. I don't even want to try to get myself into his mind,
13:46but it feels to me cause they've stopped basically since the Shanahan poking fun at his car accident
13:53thing. I don't think there's been certainly nothing else that made news. Uh, maybe there
13:57was something about a, uh, a video that he posted and he was still wearing a commander's hat, but you
14:03know, cool. Wear a commander's hat. Right. But, but the efforts and the braggadocia, if you will,
14:09of I'm about to, you're going to get the belt cause I'm going to the commanders and we about to
14:13be
14:13a championship. Like I, that stopped. Cause I, I would hope he got the message that this isn't
14:19going to work. I think your career's over actually. It very well could be. And you know,
14:24if that was an approach to, you know, goad somebody into signing you and here you sit on
14:29August 24th and you remain unsigned and the season starts here in just a couple of weeks. Yeah. Maybe
14:36you, you want to go ahead and take a different tack going forward. Um, I do want to say this
14:41without like, please, please, please no, no high and mighty here. Everybody gets their
14:46own moral code. Uh, obviously everybody gets their own moral code and, and I'm, I'm not
14:51here to judge by any stretch. There's a comment though, that we're getting a lot that makes
14:58me just a wee bit uncomfortable. Um, it's actually a series of, of comments. How about, um, this
15:04happens all the time. Um, how about this is only between his ex-wife and his sons and him? This
15:14has, this is, in other words, this is none of our business. And I'm like, okay, hold on a sec.
15:21Is this the worst crime that I've ever seen in my life? Definitely not. But there is a reason that
15:26the authorities have set up this trap in order to try to punish people for it. This is, this
15:35is put it this way. This is not an unserious crime. This is not a, a, a victimless situation. I
15:43have
15:43no idea what the background of this particular prostitution effort, but it has been said a number
15:51of times today. If you want to take that, that subject matter as a whole from the idea of individual
15:59prostitution, prostitution, race, human trafficking on and on and on. I'm just a little uncomfortable
16:04with the dismissiveness that I hear from some people of like, this is no big deal. And none of
16:09our business sucks for his ex-wife and his sons. But other than that, this is a non-issue. No,
16:15like
16:15the, it's, it's a crime for a reason is all I'm saying. In Ohio, certainly. Yes. I also
16:22want to push back at the notion of, you know, every single person who is in this trade as
16:30a sex worker is in there because they were trafficked or kidnapped, or it's completely
16:35involuntary. Not true. I agree with you. And so I, I can't give you a percentage. I don't
16:41know the percentage if there is such a thing, but I do know somebody from a long, long, long
16:47time ago who I was friends with. And I know that they worked for a time in the industry
16:53in not as a prostitute, but certainly as somebody who was doing like sexual therapy and working
17:00with individuals for payment and voluntarily to help coax them through certain situations.
17:07And so it doesn't mean that, you know, this person was doing it legally. It was certainly
17:12not legal. It was in California, but you can't look at every single individual who is getting
17:19money for these services and say, Oh, you were trafficked. You were kidnapped. Of course
17:24not. Of course not. Um, I mean, we can get into a way, way deeper psychological and social
17:29conversation about anybody who ends up in that world and what kind of got them there. Um, but
17:36no, I agree with you. I mean, we had the caller earlier that brought up human trafficking and
17:40I'm like, like breaks. Cause we don't know that. I have no idea. That's the umbrella that
17:45they put this under. Well, and in fact, if what we're talking about is a fake ad that was
17:51put up by the authorities, this might not have been a person at all. There might actually be
17:56no prostitute. Nobody in the, uh, went straight to the police office. So like, I, I, there might
18:04not be a human being here at all on the other end of this. Right. Right. And I think AI
18:09for
18:10all I know could be. And, uh, there was that show. I can't remember who the host was, but
18:14the whole, like to catch a predator show where, Oh, uh, Scott, uh, um, I was going to say,
18:22I was, I know what you were going to say. Chris Hansen. Thank you. Oh boy. And that show
18:28was phenomenal because it'd be like, come on in and have a seat. Anyway, go ahead. That
18:35show was, that show was designed to catch these predators. And I mean, this may be that this
18:42may not be that, but I think about like only fans now, and I say only fans and we all
18:47know
18:48exactly what that is. And I'm not saying that all of them are voluntarily putting their stuff
18:54out there for pay, but that's become a thing. And I don't know if all those people do it
18:59voluntarily, but it kind of seems like they call it, they call it the oldest profession
19:04in the world. Right. Don't they? So I I'm completely with you. What I'm trying to do
19:10is kind of remove judgment in both directions. I'm not going to call this human trafficking.
19:16I'm also not going to call this like, ah, you know, it's Saturday garden variety, like,
19:22you know, go do your thing, brother. Like hold hold. It's not unserious. I'm he's not a murderer.
19:32Okay. We're not, I'm not, I'm not trying to swing it in the other direction, but I don't,
19:36I do feel like some of us, and especially in the football realm, us sports fans are prone to do
19:43this, which is, Hey, let's win the game. I don't care about anything else. I don't care what these
19:50people do with their free time. I don't care who they support. I don't care what, like, okay.
19:56If that's how you want to go about it, there are things in Bay area sports. Jed York's behavior
20:02over the weekend is not the only one there are off of the playing field things that as a fan
20:09bother me. Absolutely. Talk to me about what the giants ownership does with their free time
20:19and resources. Don't love it. I don't love it at all. And, and so to each and every one of
20:25us,
20:25you get to either have that be a thing or not, but I don't want to dismiss this as like,
20:30this is not a real crime. It's a crime. It's a crime and it's a misdemeanor. And if you find
20:36it
20:36to be disgusting and abhorrent, well, then you can either take your fanship elsewhere, or you can
20:43just, you know, be disappointed. But one thing for me is certain that his credibility as the owner of
20:50that organization has been damaged. And absolutely irreparably, I don't really know, but this is a,
20:55it's a big blow.
