00:00This is the kind of thing that I think brings around a wide range of reactions and opinions.
00:08I think there's room for all of them.
00:10I don't know as a 49er fan how you are feeling right now as far as how this affects football,
00:18how it affects organizational operations, how it affects you as a fan.
00:26If, I don't know, if you sit down and watch a football game in a couple of weeks,
00:30does this make you feel icky or something like that?
00:34Look, there's room for all of this.
00:37And I know that some of you are like, who gives a rip?
00:41What are we having for dinner tonight?
00:43That's all out there.
00:45I don't know.
00:46How'd this grab you today?
00:47It didn't grab me in terms of, oh boy, I mean, the Niners,
00:51I'm going to bet the under on nine and a half wins now because the owner has found his way
00:57into trouble in East Ohio.
00:59So in terms of football, like, does this affect George Kittle being able to play in week one
01:04or Christian McCaffrey in his tightness and Nick Bosa in his ACL?
01:08Like all the football stuff, no, it doesn't affect it.
01:11Does it give me the ick, as you said?
01:14Yeah, of course.
01:15And it makes me just wonder about not only what actually took place with Jed York and what normally does
01:23take place with Jed York,
01:25but the organization and the fact that, you know, now you have a second headline.
01:29And we'll put the Kyle Shanahan accident aside because it was an accident.
01:33And you and I differ on what may or may not have happened.
01:36And that's not even important here.
01:37This is now a thing where you've got your owner, your principal owner, who is in Ohio and making a
01:46horrific choice in 930 in the morning
01:49and getting caught and now he's in an orange jumpsuit.
01:52And so the organization itself is national headline news for the wrong reasons.
01:58Yeah, it's embarrassing.
01:59Yes.
01:59It's embarrassing.
02:00And for me, the biggest takeaway is that this is a reputation changer.
02:06I don't know about you.
02:09As a sports fan, I think we are constantly, not just being asked to, but I think we constantly do
02:16compartmentalize.
02:18We do.
02:19We compartmentalize in all kinds of ways when we sit down on a Sunday and watch a football game.
02:24We can find it to be abhorrent that CTE just overruns the post-career for these football players.
02:39There are players all over the television set who have been involved in this, that, and the other in terms
02:46of morals.
02:48And we're able to find our way through that and enjoy it.
02:53And some people, in fact, work very hard to do that.
02:55A lot of people don't want to be confronted with anything.
03:00In fact, that is sports to them.
03:02Sports is where we can go to forget the other six days of the week and all the stuff that
03:08comes at us that we don't want to deal with or think about and all of that.
03:12So, I do think there's constant compartmentalization, sensation, as we watch this.
03:22So, I think this is another one of those scenarios.
03:27But the owner, I mean, look, it's embarrassing and it's not good for any front-facing individual to be dealing
03:35with anything that's a reputation changer.
03:37Which is why I do think that this sticks and has some sort of long-term impact, but not on
03:43the field.
03:44I don't think it has an impact on the football field.
03:48I just think it has an impact on the organization as a whole.
03:54Like, let's be real.
03:56Most people are never going to look at Jed York the same way again.
03:58This is the biggest headline he's ever dealt with.
04:00Right, and so when you don't look at him the same way, maybe that is, you know, colored by whatever
04:06choice he makes down the road because he is the CEO.
04:09And so, if you get to a spot where he decides that he wants to move on from John Lynch
04:15or Kyle Shanahan or maybe they want to leave.
04:17And so, it's Jed York who has to be the person to say, yeah, we've decided not to renew the
04:22contracts of blah, blah, blah.
04:24You could look at him and say, well, yeah, like, why do I even respect you for your decision because
04:29you did this?
04:30And you think about him in the orange jumpsuit and you think about his mugshot.
04:34So, it definitely colors your impression of him going forward.
04:38And I can't help but make the Larry Bear comp.
04:41And Larry Bear was not charged with a misdemeanor, but he was caught on tape wrestling a phone from his
04:47wife.
04:48And she tumbled to the ground and she later said that, you know, she had a foot injury and she
04:53lost her balance.
04:54And, you know, whatever the aftermath was, Larry Bear's reputation, now 10 years later, has never been the same.
05:01Not really, although I don't think people think or talk about it as much.
05:05It kind of lowered him within the organization.
05:08So, okay, that has had an effect.
05:11To me, that story, I mean, one of the number one messages I think we get bombarded with on this.
05:16Because when it comes to stuff that happens that's negative out in the world, boy, there is a difference when
05:22there's video and when there's not.
05:24Like, I hate that.
05:26Steve Kerr, famously, Jordan Poole gets punched.
05:30What's he ticked about?
05:31The fact that there's video and the fact that it got out.
05:33You know what I mean?
05:34Do you feel the same way about Joe Mixon as you did about Ray Rice?
05:39Ray Rice had video.
05:40Yep.
05:41Ray Rice had video.
05:42And you saw it.
05:44Ray Rice is not the only person who put hands on his spouse in the National Football League.
05:49It's never okay.
05:50But he became the poster for it because we saw it.
05:54And it was absolutely, horribly breathtaking.
05:58It's just an awful, awful look.
06:00And so, you know, the Larry Bear thing, yeah, that had video.
06:04This has a mugshot, which is a terrible embarrassment and look and all of those things.
06:09But I don't, I don't think it sticks in that way because you don't have to look at it.
06:16You didn't have to see the crime.
06:17You didn't.
06:18But the fact that there's a mugshot, I think, is almost as powerful as the video.
06:23And, you know, I was watching the video earlier of Larry Bear just to make sure that I had the
06:27timeline accurate as far as, you know, what has happened since then.
06:31Because since Larry Bear basically ceded control of, you know, the ownership, the team has not been very good.
06:39And the Johnsons took the controlling interest.
06:41And you've had five years of losing.
06:43You had two years of dead 500.
06:46You had the one year 107 wins.
06:48And so I do think that you can look at that incident back in March of, I guess it was
06:532017 or 2018.
06:55And when Larry Bear had to take that step back.
06:58And I'm not saying that Jed York will do the same thing.
07:00But the mugshot is, to me, almost as powerful as that video.
07:05I know for a fact that it was 2019 because I had returned to my native Bay Area to take
07:14over the show surrounding Giants games.
07:18On their flagship station, right as that happened.
07:21Yeah, it happened in March.
07:22So, yeah.
07:22Literally.
07:23Literally had been here for about two weeks.
07:25There you go.
07:26I'd been here for about two weeks.
07:27And I'm like, I'm sorry.
07:28I need to talk about what?
07:30Where?
07:32I've been here for two weeks.
07:34Right.
07:34Hey, Sally.
07:352019.
07:36Yeah, you're right.
07:36So, I also suffer a little bit from onerism.
07:41Right?
07:41Like, we talk about draftism, hate sexism, hate racism.
07:45But I do suffer a little bit from onerism.
07:47And here's what I mean by that.
07:50I tend to think that if you are a, hmm, let's see, a white male billionaire in this country, I
07:58sort of just assume you're into some stuff.
08:01And maybe that's not fair.
08:03But I tend to think that in that class of society and what allows people to get to that level,
08:11I'm not saying they're all criminals.
08:13You know what I mean?
08:14I mean, I'm just saying that I, like, I don't know.
08:17I tend to think that there's, there's just a lot of dealings.
08:20There's a lot of boardroom dealings.
08:22I'm not talking about crimes necessarily.
08:25But, I don't know.
08:26Less of me is maybe shocked about this than it sounds like some other people are.
08:33I'm not saying I assumed that Jed was into weird stuff.
08:37I just, I don't know.
08:39I don't know.
08:40I assume that in that high class world of access and the thought that I can afford anything and I
08:48can get away with anything, it tends to lead people to try to get away with anything.
08:55That's been my experience.
08:57I get that.
08:58He's not the only billionaire in the NFL to get caught up in stuff with the opposite sex.
09:04Well, you can.
09:04It's like 20% of the owners.
09:06You could name a bunch of owners who we know have done some stuff that they've been caught up in.
09:12I do think that the sensational nature of this is multifold.
09:17One of them is the fact that he was looking for something for $140.
09:23And so, you're a multi-millionaire.
09:25Maybe you're a billionaire.
09:26And you're out there going online at 9.30 in the morning.
09:31And you're looking to pay $140 for companionship.
09:36That, to me, becomes a big part of the story.
09:38And if we go back to the Tiger Woods scandal.
09:40And, yeah, he crashes into a tree.
09:43And his wife tries to rescue him with a nine iron.
09:46And then we find out, no, it was an affair.
09:48No, it was two affairs.
09:50Oh, my God.
09:50It was 18 affairs, many of whom were employees of the Waffle House.
09:55And so, I do think you got, as that thing continued to unfold, I'm not saying that this will.
10:00But part of the sensational nature of the Tiger Woods drama was the fact that this guy's worth $100, $400
10:07million or whatever.
10:09And he's out there, you know, trying to make it happen on the margins.
10:14We want to talk to you about this, 888-957-9570, on how this lands with you as a 49er
10:20fan.
10:21And for those of you who might just be joining us, Niners principal owner, Jed York, has pled no contest
10:29to a pair of misdemeanor charges Monday in Ohio,
10:32stemming from suspicion of engaging in prostitution.
10:39County court records, according to ESPN, allege that York responded to an undercover ad on a known prostitution website and,
10:49quote,
10:50arranged to have sexual activity with the female in exchange for $140.
10:57He has also been sentenced to two days in jail.
11:00It is considered that one of them has already been taken care of.
11:05I think he spent one night in jail, so maybe he's got one more day of jail.
11:09There's a fine of about $1,200 or $1,300.
11:11He pleads no contest.
11:14And case is considered closed.
11:17So, that is the news with regard to what has gone on with Jed York over the weekend.
11:25And now we go from here.
11:27And the statements have been released.
11:30The 49ers is like, close case.
11:33And so, no further comment at this time.
11:35And the league has predictably said, we're aware.
11:38And we'll send this through the personal conduct policy.
11:41And if you're a 49er fan, you know where that's heading.
11:43And he's going to be suspended for a few games and fined.
11:46And you don't care.
11:47Because he doesn't play linebacker.
11:49Right.
11:50And so, I mean, as a 49er fan, you look at this and you say,
11:54it is a big nothing burger, to use John Lynch's phrase.
11:57At the same time, if you are a 49er fan and you look at, you know,
12:02the organization and you hold them to a certain standard of moral rectitude,
12:06you might be a little bit put off by this fact and this news.
12:10Of course you might be.
