00:00How the hell is this team 6-3?
00:02It probably shouldn't be 6-3.
00:04Probably shouldn't be sort of like earmarked for a playoff spot right now,
00:07but they are.
00:09They are, and I just don't think that you're allowed to be kind of flimsy
00:12or dismissive with stuff like that.
00:14It doesn't always happen that way.
00:16We know that.
00:17Every franchise knows that.
00:18It is very fleeting, these opportunities.
00:21So, however they got here, stupid schedule, win close games,
00:26whatever reason you want to come up with,
00:28but the bottom line is you are 6-3.
00:31You are in what I think is the hardest division in football.
00:35You are 3-0 in that division.
00:38You are playing your fourth division game this weekend at home.
00:42You have got to give those guys out on this field
00:45every single advantage that you can create.
00:49So that does not mean all in.
00:51That does not mean rentals.
00:52That does not mean giving up first or second round draft picks.
00:54But if I'm John Lynch, I got to do something.
00:57I got to do something to get another pass rusher at least on this roster by Sunday.
01:04Actually, by Wednesday because the deadline is tomorrow.
01:06And they've done so already with the additions of Keon White and Cleland Furrell
01:11who immediately came in and made an impact.
01:13And now you lose Mikel Williams to an ACL.
01:16So he's gone for the rest of this year and who knows how long into next year.
01:20And there was another, I guess, ligament or the meniscus part of it that he hurt,
01:26which is normal when you have an ACL injury.
01:29Usually the meniscus gets victimized as well.
01:31So he'll be out for nine months or maybe more.
01:34And so, yeah, you deal with that as well.
01:37And that's more of a problem for next year.
01:38But in the meantime, you don't only need impact players, you need bodies.
01:43You need human beings, as we said last week.
01:46You need people who are really big, who play football,
01:50who can come in and try to get after the quarterback
01:51because right now you're running low on bodies.
01:54Yeah.
01:54So to me, those are kind of the two questions of the day.
01:59888-957-9570.
02:02We have arrived at now.
02:06It's kind of like that old Spaceballs movie for those of you who are Mel Brooks fans.
02:09Where are we?
02:10It's now.
02:11Not then.
02:12And it's not what's coming up.
02:14It's now.
02:14And now is 6-3.
02:17You have started the second half of the season.
02:20The trade deadline is less than 24 hours away.
02:23But you're also, I don't know how to describe it,
02:28not that good.
02:30But, like, and I don't even know to what level that matters.
02:36Does it matter what we all think a football team is, you know,
02:43on paper or the eye test or all of those things that we do?
02:47I don't think it matters.
02:49In fact, I've argued for years.
02:51The thing that, like, for me, always keeps me one degree away from college football
02:56is the fact that when they get to their end of the year,
02:59they bring into their finish what people think of teams.
03:04And I hate that.
03:05Subjectivity.
03:06Hate it.
03:06Yep.
03:07Football and all sports should be kept on the field.
03:11You win or you lose.
03:13And when you win, you move on.
03:15I don't want you telling me that somebody who's 10-2 is better than somebody who's 12-0
03:20because you think they are.
03:21I don't care.
03:22I don't care what their enrollment is.
03:24I don't care how much their coach is being paid.
03:27Don't care.
03:28You play to win the game.
03:31Hello?
03:32That's it.
03:33That's all there is.
03:35And so maybe it doesn't matter if we think the Niners are that good
03:38because they're 6-3 and they can evolve also.
03:43There are other players who are not playing right now who in theory could be playing soon,
03:48whether that's Brock Purdy, Ricky Pearsall, Bryce Huff, or whoever.
03:52But to me, you can't do nothing.
03:56Nothing would be offensive to the players in the locker room who have achieved this.
04:01Well, you need bodies.
04:03And again, to say that they're going to do nothing, I don't think that is going to be the case.
04:07And they might actually just sign people off somebody else's practice squad.
04:10They may not even trade to bring in a person.
04:14And you talk about whether or not they're good.
04:17There are five teams in the NFC with six wins,
04:20and they have the fifth best point differential of those five.
04:23Now, you could look at Philly and Tampa and Seattle and the Rams and the Niners,
04:28and you could say, who's the best of those teams?
04:30Well, you haven't played Philly.
04:32You played Tampa.
04:33You lost.
04:33You played Seattle and the Rams, and you beat them both.
04:36Does that mean that you automatically are second or third in that group?
04:39Well, it depends on how you look at it.
04:41Right now, you've got six wins, and you could be four and five.
04:46I guess you could be nine and O.
04:47I don't really see that as the way these games have gone.
04:50There's a couple that you've stolen.
04:52I don't think of the games you've lost, there weren't any of those games that you, quote,
04:56gave away like the Warriors did on Saturday night.
04:59The games that you've lost are you didn't play great, and Houston was better than you,
05:04and Jacksonville came in, and they made more plays than you, and you lost that game.
05:07So I do think you look at six and three, and they've had injuries, and the rest of it,
05:12and you can see, yeah, six and three, good.
05:15You found a couple of wins in there that maybe you didn't, quote, deserve, but who cares?
05:20You're six and three.
05:21Well, and I also think that from a fan perspective, we tend to always just want to go for it.
05:26Like, you know what I mean?
05:28Yeah.
05:28It takes too much brain power to do the whole, like, well, what are the salary cap ramifications?
05:35What are you doing over there with your spreadsheet?
05:38How does that affect next year?
05:40F them picks.
05:41We love F them picks.
05:43People love F them picks.
05:44I heard Shasky this morning going, okay, how many of your draft picks that you made last year
05:48or this calendar year are actually helping right now?
05:53And I was like, I get why you're asking that question.
05:56Feels a little bit unfair, though, because I don't think that's the point of a draft pick necessarily.
06:01I'm not going to judge.
06:02You and I have always said, when do you judge a draft?
06:05I'm going to judge a draft about two, three years.
06:08I'm not going to hold everybody's feet to the fire if you're not contributing right away.
06:14That does not automatically mean that you should just, like, not care about draft picks.
06:20You have to care about draft picks.
06:22You don't get to be one of these people that worries about Brock Purdy's salary
06:26and also doesn't care about picks.
06:29You have to do one or the other.
06:31Period.
06:32You're going to need some cheap labor on this team going forward.
06:36So you've got to keep your picks, and the fact that you don't hit on all of them
06:39does not mean that you should just throw all of them out in the trash.
06:42That's not how it works.
06:44So I think the Niners need to be, and I guess I'm trying to, like, make up a term here
06:50that doesn't even exist.
06:51But they need to be, like, modestly aggressive.
06:55I want them to be aggressive, but in a very smart and measured sort of a way.
07:01Aggressive meaning active, but if you're asking for first or second round capital
07:06and probably even third, I'm not interested.
07:09If you're offering me a rental who will be a big-money player that needs a new contract
07:13at the end of the year, I'm not interested.
07:16But if you are offering, as you put it, a human being with a helmet and pads who has at one time
07:23or another in his life socked a quarterback.
07:25Tackled another human being.
07:27Have you gotten out of the way of a 300-pound person who's trying to stop you
07:32and then gone to get another person and brought them to the ground?
07:35If you've done those things, if that's on your resume, and you're not terribly expensive,
07:41and you're under control beyond this year, I'm listening.
07:44And I want that player.
07:47And, in fact, I would argue the Niners have to go get at least one of those players
07:54and bring him in because everyone will focus on Mikel Williams,
07:58and it wasn't just Mikel Williams.
08:00It was Yitour Grossmatos coming back to practice Thursday
08:04and getting injured again and immediately being put on IR.
08:08So all of the, hey, we got two new bodies this week.
08:10We got Keon White, and we got Cleland Furl, and you lost Grossmatos,
08:16and you lost Mikel Williams.
08:18So you are back to even.
08:20Well, but now you're going to get Bryce Huff.
08:22Okay, plus one.
08:23I need at least plus two.
08:25I need at least plus two if I'm a 49er veteran player.
08:28No doubt.
08:29And this team has always thrived on having seven or eight guys in the rotation anyway,
08:33and now if you don't have that, and keep in mind that Sam Okawonu is playing with a bad ankle,
08:39and he played pretty well on that bad ankle,
08:41but you've got other people who are likely to go down just based on the way things work around here.
08:50So, yeah, add one, maybe add two.
08:52You've got practice squad guys.
08:54You've got other people's practice squad you can pluck from,
08:57but it would be great to go out there and get somebody who you could look at and say,
09:00yeah, you're going to be a regular three-down defensive lineman who we can go in there and play 75% of the time
09:08and rely on this year and then maybe again next year.
09:11And I think that our two questions today are related.
09:15I don't know if they're brothers, but maybe they're like half-brothers or whatever,
09:19because I think that it would help, and I'm sure the Niners have done this,
09:23it helps to answer the question of what do you want to do with the deadline
09:28by having an answer to the question, how are they 6-3?
09:32Do you know what I mean?
09:34And here's what we're really getting at.
09:37The Niners are 6-3, but do you think they're good?
09:40You think the Niners are a good team?
09:42Sure.
09:44Sure.
09:44I mean, what's a good team?
09:46Your tone is hilarious, though.
09:47No, but, like, what's a good team?
09:49Are they the best team in the NFC?
09:50No.
09:51Are they a playoff team?
09:52Yes.
09:53Are they good?
09:54Well, right now on this Monday, yeah, damn it, they're good.
09:57And when you play the Rams on Sunday, and if you happen to lose
10:00and you ask me next Monday, are the Niners a good team?
10:03I guess.
10:04But isn't it fair for me to say?
10:05It's week to week.
10:05But when Kyle Shanahan has been asked this question before,
10:09you planning on being aggressive and adding at the deadline?
10:12Well, no, this doesn't feel like previous teams.
10:16This doesn't feel like 2019.
10:18This doesn't feel like that when we went out and got Emmanuel Sanders.
10:20Right.
10:21You need to answer your own question.
10:21Yeah, he says that over and over,
10:24and what I think he's also saying under the covers is,
10:27well, no, no, no, we're not as good as those teams.
10:29We're not that good.
10:31But you're 6-3.
10:33But who in the NFC is that good?
10:34Okay.
10:35Is the point.
10:35We can get it.

11:03How are the Niners 6-3?
11:06What on earth is the reason that they have arrived at 6-3?
11:11Is this actually a good team?
11:13Or have they just sort of found their way to 6-3?
