Willard and Dibs react to Kyle Shanahan's comments on Jed York's arrest.
Transcript
00:00Was I off base in the crossover?
00:02Has this been an awful offseason?
00:04And I just missed it?
00:06Over here with my rosy glasses?
00:08Like, is this...
00:09I'm being completely genuine.
00:12I don't...
00:13I understand there have been some unfortunate
00:15and weird and whatever stories.
00:18Brandon on Instagram,
00:20Kyle with a no-look car accident
00:22and Jed York over the weekend.
00:26But did I miss how this makes the season harder?
00:33Like, I am fully willing to be the dummy here.
00:37I have no idea how any of that
00:40has anything to do with football.
00:42Well, the Kyle piece,
00:43it does to the extent of,
00:45you know, is he going to be 100%?
00:47And it seems like he's either there
00:49or he's close to being there.
00:50And you could look at it and say,
00:52oh boy, those two weeks
00:54where he couldn't even, like,
00:56get through a whole practice.
00:57Did that set them back?
00:58I don't buy it.
00:59And I think that that is, you know,
01:01trying to cherry pick bad news.
01:03The Ricky Pearsall thing,
01:04I look at that even.
01:06Okay, fine.
01:07Ricky Pearsall, you're gone for the year.
01:09I believe, and this is my own opinion,
01:11I was not at practice today.
01:13I look at the tea leaves and it was,
01:15yeah, we're going to get Mike Evans,
01:17we're going to get Christian Kirk,
01:18and we're going to draft Dejan Stribbling.
01:20I think that they knew that this was more
01:22than just a likelihood.
01:24This was possibly the way it was going to go.
01:27It's a fair take.
01:28I mean, let's knock that around a little bit
01:31in a little bit.
01:33But definitely want everybody to hear
01:35what Kyle Shanahan had to say
01:38with regard to the Jed York situation.
01:40It was a little,
01:42I don't want to say it was, like, nervous,
01:44but I'm in the room down there today,
01:46and I'm like, I'm not going to be the one to ask
01:50because I don't get to go to most practices.
01:53And I absolutely, like,
01:55I'll just be real with everybody.
01:56I did not want it to look like
01:59this is why I came today.
02:01Totally.
02:02I came here to get answers from you, Kyle.
02:05You're going to hold his feet to the fire.
02:07But we're, like, seven questions in.
02:11And it's like, so, I've noticed that
02:13Jacob Cowley's not out there today, Kyle.
02:15And I'm, like, kind of looking around.
02:17I'm, like, somebody's going to ask, right?
02:20Did you do it?
02:21No.
02:22Somebody asked.
02:23Let's go to Mark in the back.
02:24I'm, like, guys, somebody's going to,
02:27Jed York, right?
02:28Like, we're going to, and then, yes.
02:30They did.
02:31We did.
02:32And here's Kyle Shanahan on actually speaking
02:36directly to Jed York.
02:38To Jed the last two days and today.
02:42Obviously, it's a very tough situation.
02:44I mean, views for the organization going forward
02:46is the same as usual.
02:48I mean, there won't be any difference in that.
02:49But I know it's extremely fresh.
02:51I think it's a very, very personal situation.
02:54I got a lot of respect for Jed.
02:56I got a lot of respect for Danielle.
02:58Their family does mean a lot to me.
03:00So, I'm, like, with it being this personal,
03:02I'm trying as hard as I can to keep it that way.
03:04Danielle, his wife, or potentially his soon-to-be ex-wife,
03:08what have you.
03:09I mean, you could immediately tell this is the way Kyle
03:12was looking at it, and I sort of respected this.
03:15He's like, look, you know, these are people that are in my world.
03:20In many ways, this is a co-worker, and how would you handle it?
03:23You know what I mean?
03:24If a co-worker went down this road,
03:27your thought would not be the same way many of us go.
03:31Like, okay, TMZ, leadership with the Niners,
03:35you might instead be like, this is an acquaintance,
03:39potentially even a friend of mine,
03:41and I'm going to have concern for their family.
03:44And that's definitely how, I'm just saying,
03:47genuinely looking into his eyes as he said that,
03:49that is absolutely where his mind was on this one.
03:53And honestly, what is he supposed to say?
03:54He was not there in East Palestine.
03:58He doesn't know the full details,
04:00and especially coming off of what he went through,
04:03which is an accident,
04:04and there's been a wild amount of speculation
04:07about what actually happened,
04:08and he has had to answer two or three or four times
04:12about, you know, what happened, what he remembers,
04:14and did you have the phone?
04:16Did you drop the phone, and whatever?
04:17And that was actually something that happened here,
04:19and so his sensitivity is obviously more heightened
04:22based on what he just went through.
04:24So this, I thought, was an important one,
04:26even though it's short.
04:27He was asked, is Jed going to be away from the team?
04:33And this was a fun one to, like, again,
04:35watch the way Kyle's eyes sort of darted
04:38as he answered that.
04:39Is Jed going to be away from the team?
04:43I mean, it's kind of, it's been like that this summer anyways,
04:46you know, with him being out in Ohio and things like that,
04:47so there'd be no difference right now.
04:49He hasn't been here for training camp.
04:51Is he going to be away from the team?
04:53Yeah.
04:54Possibly.
04:54Always away from the team.
04:55Well, especially this summer and stuff,
04:57because the reports are that they filed for divorce after Mother's Day,
05:01and that was May,
05:02and so if the reports are true that he's been spending the majority of his time
05:06in Ohio, that would be away from the team.
05:09I mean, I would just like, I'll share with,
05:11if somebody said, hey, something happened with the owner of Odyssey,
05:15right?
05:16Now, how's this guy, is this going to affect your day-to-day operations?
05:22You would say, who is the owner of Odyssey?
05:25I've never met this person.
05:27Like, that's, this is an owner.
05:29This is not, this person does,
05:33and maybe we're like messed up here because of Joe Lacob.
05:36Joe Lacob is very rare.
05:39However, most, you know what I mean?
05:41Hey, Rafi, how did Charles Johnson affect that home run last night?
05:46I've never met Charles Johnson.
05:48Right.
05:48He's 94.
05:49Right.
05:51Okay.
05:53More from Kyle on Jed.
05:57No, it's the same as always.
05:58I mean, Jed has been as good as it gets since I've been here
06:01on letting the football people make football decisions.
06:03I mean, Jed always wants to be informed and a part of things,
06:06but Jed has been exactly what he said he would be
06:09on letting us make those decisions,
06:10and he always wants to know about them and stuff,
06:12and whether he's here in the building or a text away
06:15or on a phone call, that doesn't change anything.
06:18Most Dan Dibley thing I've ever heard.
06:20Yeah.
06:20He always wants to know about them and stuff.
06:22Exactly.
06:23Yeah.
06:23I think that that is the case and stuff,
06:25especially now that he's going to be, you know, in Ohio,
06:28and, you know, if he's not around, then, you know,
06:30it's a text or it's a phone call.
06:32And the first one you played is the one that hits me probably
06:35not the hardest, but it hits me in the heart to where,
06:39think about Jed York and Kyle Shanahan.
06:42They both live in Los Altos Hills, and that's what, you know,
06:45Kyle has said, and that's what Jed apparently has said
06:47about where they live.
06:48And so you're friends and neighbors,
06:50and now this is, what, year 10 of you working together and stuff?
06:54And, you know, like the Yorks and the Shanahans, Mike Shanahan.
06:58So when Kyle was just a wee little guy,
07:02and Jed is about the same age and stuff,
07:04he might be a little bit younger,
07:05but I would imagine that they've known each other
07:08for a long time and stuff.
07:09And so when you, like, have this sort of a relationship,
07:13and now he works for Jed, and Jed and he go way back,
07:16it's going to hit him in a certain way.
07:18One more from Kyle.
07:19And stuff.
07:20My view is, as the coach, does it have an effect on us as a team?
07:23And that's what I continue to answer on.
07:25From a football standpoint, it has no effect on us.
07:27I mean, as far as what we do day to day,
07:29what we talk about, and it hasn't been mentioned in a meeting today,
07:32it doesn't have to do with what happens on the field.
07:34Everything outside of there, I think you guys can judge that better than me.
07:37This is the one and only concern that I've had about Joe Lacob all along,
07:43and I've stated it on this show.
07:45I always have concerns when owners are involved in sports operations
07:53and roster construction.
07:55That's when I have concerns.
07:57I don't have concerns when owners have no say.
08:01That's what I usually root for.
08:03However, most owners don't do anything with regard to the team.
08:10They make money.
08:11That's what they do.
08:13And they have shareholders and meetings and strategy based on that.
08:19But if you ask Jed York, like, when do you need to be at work tomorrow?
08:24The answer is never.
08:28Like, absolutely nothing to do with the operation of this football team at all.
08:32It's embarrassing for him.
08:33It's embarrassing for them as a corporation.
08:37But I was glad Kyle spoke the way he did today.
08:40I don't think this has anything to do with anything with regard to the stuff that we all care about.
