00:01The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is now growing, quote, exponentially, according to the United Nations.
00:10More than 2,500 deaths have been recorded in the last three months, half of which came in just the
00:16last 20 days.
00:19It's already the largest outbreak in the country's history and the fastest spreading on record.
00:25Speaking from Bunia at the epicentre of the crisis, the UN senior Ebola coordinator said the epidemic now covers an
00:33area larger than France and warns it's outpacing the response effort.
00:38The outbreak was declared on the 15th of May, though it is believed to have been spreading for weeks before
00:44that.
00:44It's hit regions in the north and east where state presence is weak, health infrastructure is lacking and armed groups
00:51have been operating for decades.
00:54The UN says more staff and resources could slow transmission within months, but without that support, it warns the epidemic
01:02will grow deadlier and could spread into neighbouring countries.
01:05That's the news for studies.
