In today's Forecast Feed, Bernie Rayno takes a look at the potential for cold and snow as we head into January.
Transcript
00:00And certainly a much different pattern over the next 10 days. It is going to be cold from the
00:11lakes toward the northeast. Lots of snow downwind of the lakes. We're tracking a little bit of snow
00:18across the upper Midwest into the northeast. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Tricky little snow.
00:23We're also going to keep you an eye on the time frame of about a week from now next week as we get
00:30toward the 8th and 9th of January. So next week, I think there's a potential for snow. It's a little
00:37up in the air, but I do want to show you the pattern across the country as we go over the
00:42next 10 days. And you can see while it's while it's going to stay cold from the lakes toward the
00:47northeast and in the parts of mid-Atlantic here, take a look at what's going on. Let me two screen.
00:52Well, let me put this up here. I don't know why I did that. So let me show you this. You've got this
00:59upper low here. And what's going to happen is this is going to sit here pretty much over the next 10
01:06days. And what it does is it just sends shots of cold air into the Midwest and northeast. Follow
01:11the wind flow. Where's it coming from? Right in here. Yukon and Northwest Territories here. So this
01:17is what the pattern looks like this evening. As we get toward Wednesday, look at the upper low,
01:22continue to spin around Hudson Bay. This is Friday. This is January 2nd. Upper lows here.
01:30What do you have? Northwesterly flow and the cold air just keeps coming. So that's the second. Let's go
01:36to a week from now. Let's go to the Tuesday the 6th. What do you have here? Still a dip in the jet
01:44stream across the eastern U.S. And what are you looking for? Look at the wind flow. Where's it coming
01:49from? Northwest Territories keeping it on the cold side here. Let's get toward 10 days from now. This
01:55is the 8th. This is where the pattern begins to change a little bit. This upper low, which is in
02:01here. Let's go back. It's there. Watch what happens by Thursday. It leaves. And that's when you finally
02:08get some moderation. A little bit. Let's get toward the 9th and the 10th. And you could see you have
02:15more, a little bit of cold. But for the most part, you've got a little bit of a zone of flow. And then
02:22next weekend, another shot of cold air comes in. So for the most part, from now through mid-January,
02:29it's generally going to be cold in the lakes, northeast, and at times in the mid-Atlantic. Now,
02:35I want to take you to New Year's Eve because we were talking about this since last week. I have a U.S.
02:41map because I want to zoom in a little bit here. This is the piece of energy, this little shortwave
02:46coming on south. Now, remember what I talked about last week. The farther this digs or moves to the
02:54south, the farther the south the snow will be. Not a big snow, but a snow that could be a coating no
03:00inch or two. And watch what happens here. This is the European model. This is Wednesday evening. So this is
03:05New Year's Eve. Watch how this comes south. And I mention this because what I'm concerned about
03:14is that while you're going to get snow across the Midwest and Northeast, I'm worried if that New
03:19York City could get a little sneaky snow. I think it would be New York City, I-95 on North and East.
03:24Of course, you're going to get it west and north of the 95 corridor. But I'm starting to worry that
03:29there could be a little bit of snow New Year's Eve around New York City. Watch the surface panel here
03:35on the European. So here it comes. This is Wednesday. Here comes your snow. Little bit here across the
03:41upper Midwest. There it is. That's Wednesday afternoon. So tomorrow afternoon. Then tomorrow
03:46evening starts going across parts of the lakes. Here it is. Not a lot. And then moving forward. See,
03:53right in here, this is New Year's Eve. You see you have a little low pressure system here and a little
04:00bit of snow shown around New York City. Now, I didn't think it would get to New York City initially,
04:05but I think we're going to keep an eye on that. Do I think it's a lot? No, but it could be a coating
04:09to an inch. A little sneaky here up toward Boston as well. You see that right in there. Not a lot, but
04:16enough that it could cause problems here. Of course, you'll get higher amounts western parts of
04:21Pennsylvania. So when you look at our snow map here for this system, there it is. And let me put
04:27this on full screen here. I would worry that, you know, you get a coating, you know, reduced
04:36visibility or a little coating to an inch. And I'm wondering if this can get into New York City,
04:42Long Island and Boston. I don't think it would get to Philadelphia. That's something to keep an eye on.
04:47All right. Again, it's not a big storm, but it could be a disruptive system. Now, I want to go
04:53back then because as I mentioned, after this goes by, it gets very quiet across the country until the
05:00latter half of next week. I still think there's an opportunity for snow in the Mid-Atlantic and
05:06Northeast as we get into Thursday and Friday of next week, about the 8th and the 9th here. Let me show
05:11you the pattern. Things have changed a little bit here. I don't know why it keeps doing that. So there's a
05:17little trough coming in here. This is Monday and Tuesday. What this is going to do is this brings
05:21an injection of cold air as we get in a week from now. And then that sets us up. You have the cold
05:26air. Now, yesterday, and you see this a lot with the pattern, the models were showing this piece of
05:35energy digging all the way south along the East Coast, forming a storm and then pushing it offshore.
05:41The Europeans aren't showing that now. It's showing something a little different. Still a snow threat.
05:46But a little different. And I'm not sure what to make of it. Instead, as we get into Wednesday,
05:52you get the cold air. Here it is. And then you get this system in the southern branch and watch it
05:58move east. There it goes. And then that moves across the Northeast with the possibility of some snow and
06:04ice from the Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast. Now, the modeling suggests it's not a lot. There's an
06:10alternative solution next week, though, that was more in line of what it looked like yesterday in
06:16European. This is the Canadian. See, the Canadian does something totally. See, look, it's digging the
06:21trough, right? And we go back to the part that if this trough is a little farther west, a storm can
06:27come up the coast. Although modeling shows, at least on the Canadian, the storm does form. But the trough
06:33is too far east and it steers it out to sea. Not sure what's right yet. But I still think if you're
06:41looking for a widespread snow, let's keep an eye on Thursday and Friday of next week. That's the
06:51time frame, the watch. And that's the feed.
