In today's Forecast Feed, Bernie breaks down what the weather looks like in the coming days in the United States.

00:00Hi, dwindling snow across the Northeast. Many places are not going to have a white Christmas.
00:12It looks like a much warmer pattern compared to what we looked at just a couple days ago.
00:17In the West, here comes the rain, not for the Northwest, but in the Californian. Listen to
00:23this. I think in the Sierra, up above probably 8,000 feet, there's going to be 10 to 15 feet of
00:32snow. 10 to 15 feet of snow in the Sierra, up above about 8,000 feet next week. I'll show you why.
00:41Let me show you this. This is the snow cover across the U.S. Now, we've had a healthy snowpack
00:47much, well, since Thanksgiving Day, we've been building the snowpack in the North Central U.S.
00:55The southern part of this is really going to erode. You're going to start eroding it a little
01:00bit in the Northeast. I will say this. New England, I think there will be enough cold to sustain this
01:06snow through Christmas. The West Coast, I mean, these totals are just nothing. This is bad news
01:15right now. This is very bad news for California. Northwest, you're going to be picking up your
01:20snow this weekend, but I do believe the good news coming for California and the Sierra, you're going
01:25to start building the snow. The snow levels would have to come down a little bit, but I'll tell you
01:30what, some snow will be building up and above 8,000 feet. I always mention California with the snow
01:37because if you want to keep the water restrictions in California at bay, you need Sierra snow. All right,
01:44let me take you out to this. I want to show you there's really now going to be a lack of cold air
01:50across the country. Let me go to what we're looking at today. Here's your cold front coming
01:54toward the east today. Pretty good shot of cold air coming in. I mean, this is January cold for a day
01:59or so. Watch as we move in the next week. Here's Saturday. Look at all the cold air. There's your next
02:05shot of cold air. This is the cold front I thought that would set us up for a possibility of some snow
02:12and ice Christmas Eve, Christmas Day across parts of the Northeast, but it does retreat. But here's
02:18your cold air coming in for Sunday and then Monday, but watch by Monday afternoon. Watch how the cold
02:25air retreats. It retreats Tuesday. It retreats. And by the time you get into Tuesday, the only cold
02:32air to be found is in here. All right. I mean, you just continue to retreat. This is Christmas Eve.
02:38Look at all the cold air going away. And then by the time we get into Christmas Day,
02:44the only cold air is in a couple of spots here. I wouldn't say it's warm across New England,
02:50but most of New England, it's above historical averages. But boy, it's going to break out in
02:56here in the central U.S. So your chances for snow in the Northeast and the Midwest are like your
03:02snow cover. They're going to dwindle. All right. Now, what were we thinking? Well, I thought earlier
03:08in the week, what we would see is that this high pressure system, let's go to Monday, upper level
03:13high. Watch this. Look at the strength of this high as we move forward. Now, I thought this was
03:18going to be a little flatter, but as we get into Tuesday, look how strong it is. This is Wednesday
03:24morning, Christmas Eve. You've got a big upper high here. Here's your storminess in the West. So it's
03:30just going to bake in these areas. It's going to get very warm. Your only cool air will be with this
03:36short wave coming across the Northeast. As we get into Christmas Eve, you've got some colder air in.
03:43There it is. As we get into Christmas Eve, like we thought, but it's not nearly as strong as I thought
03:49it was going to be. So that's the surface pattern Christmas Eve. Here are the temperatures Christmas Eve
03:54in the morning. I mean, your 32 degree line is in here, but that's going to be retreating as the day
04:00goes by. So while we will have a storm coming on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, it's mostly going
04:07to be in the form of some light rain. There's the surface map. This is the American model. There it is.
04:12Little bit of ice coming in Christmas Day into the next day across Northern New England. The European
04:19model kind of showing, uh, there it is. Little bit of, little bit of rain. There's your ice across New
04:26England. So we are kind of right. There would be some ice across the Northeast, but it's up across
04:32New England, farther South. It's going to be rain. Now it's good news. If you're doing any traveling
04:36throughout the Northeast on Christmas day, Christmas night. So we are getting the storm that we highlighted
04:41for you about a week ago, but the cold there is not deep enough for any snow. Now we're going to keep an
04:46eye on it. All right. It's, it's still early in the game, but all indications are there's this upper
04:52high in Texas and, and in, and in the Gulf right in here is so strong that it's like a heat pump and
05:00all the cold air stays farther North. Now in the West, you're going to get a lot of precipitation.
05:08It's flooding is going to be a concern in the California next week. It was Northwest the last
05:15two weeks. Now it's going to shift into California. Watch the upper level pattern here. Look at this
05:20big dip in the right in here. This is Tuesday the 23rd. You've got all of this energy coming in
05:26toward California. See that? So that it begins over the weekend and then watch the surface panel.
05:35There's Tuesday. Here's Christmas Eve. Here's Christmas day. And then you start to dry things out
05:42as we head into the next weekend. So almost a week from now, but this is going to be a lot of
05:48precipitation for California. And I think Southern California, you're going to get a lot of rain with
05:53this. Look at the surface map. This is Tuesday night. This is Christmas Eve and Christmas day.
05:59I think you average about three and a quarter inches of rain during the month of December
06:04in Los Angeles. I think you're going to get that. So you had more, you had above normal rainfall in
06:10November. You're going to end up with at or above normal rainfall in December. And while the snow
06:17levels are going to be sky high in the Sierra, the liquid is going to be about 10 to 14 inches.
06:25So that tells me in the Sierra, and here's the snow map. This is from now through Christmas day,
06:32I think above 8,000 feet. You're going to get about 10 to 14 feet of snow in the Northern and Central
06:40Sierra. Again, it's high, but it's important because it's the snow in the Sierra that melts
06:47in the spring and keeps the reservoirs fill in California. Less snow in the Northeast,
06:55but 10 to 14 feet of snow in the Sierra. And that's feet.
