Five biological brothers were adopted into what was supposed to be a safe home. But years later, investigators say footage recovered from inside that home revealed how differently the children were actually being treated behind closed doors. The investigation initially began with a separate case involving one of the adoptive fathers and another adopted son. But while examining surveillance footage and electronic devices from the home, detectives discovered hours of recordings involving the five younger brothers. Investigators said the footage showed the children extremely thin, frequently underdressed and having their access to food and water restricted. Detectives also discovered that the boys were regularly sent into a basement room they described as essentially a "dungeon." The videos became critical evidence as detectives began questioning the family. During one interview, investigators confronted the couple's 20-year-old biological son about footage allegedly showing him physically confronting one of the boys after the child tried to get something to drink. Although he disputed parts of what detectives described, he admitted that he had previously struck the younger children. Investigators also confronted both adoptive fathers about the children's condition and the punishments taking place inside the home. One father admitted using a belt as punishment on multiple occasions and acknowledged that one incident left visible marks. He also told investigators that his husband had used a wooden board when punishing the children. Detectives continued pressing both men about who controlled the children's food, the basement confinement, the cameras and the punishments captured on video. The five brothers were eventually removed from the home in February 2024. The case ultimately resulted in guilty pleas. One adoptive father pleaded guilty to five counts of child endangering and received a minimum sentence of 13 years. The other pleaded guilty to multiple serious charges and received a minimum sentence of 15 years. Their 20-year-old biological son also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor child-endangering charges and received two years of probation. Most importantly, all five brothers survived. Prosecutors later said the children were living somewhere else and thriving, although they would likely require continued support. What started as an investigation into an entirely different case ultimately led detectives to hours of footage from inside the family home—and exposed what authorities say these
