JP and BMitch debate whether Jayden Daniels should be a favorite for the Comeback Player of the Year award this season?
Transcript
00:00If you look at the odds for Comeback Player of the Year,
00:03technically the award goes to a player who has returned from illness,
00:07physical injury, or other circumstances that led him to miss playing time
00:12the previous season.
00:15Last year it was Christian McCaffrey that won it.
00:20If you look at some of the...
00:23I don't think it has to be an offensive player,
00:25so I think it could be a defensive player.
00:30Do you think Jaden Daniels had the kind of season last year where he could win it?
00:35Yeah.
00:36He played seven games, didn't start all seven.
00:40He started seven, he finished four.
00:42Yeah, finished four, whatever.
00:45And if he was injured, and if he comes back and have a year,
00:50anywhere close to what he did the first year, he's there.
00:53The favorites to win per BetMGM, I think I'm looking at,
00:58Patrick Mahomes at plus 185.
01:01Yeah, I forgot about Pat.
01:02But Pat got hurt like week 15 or something, right?
01:05No.
01:05He didn't miss most of the year.
01:07It was a little bit before that, wasn't it?
01:09I thought he played most of the year, man.
01:11But you got to realize, this is a Super Bowl champion who had a knee injury
01:15and he went out.
01:16He comes back and leads him back to it like a playoff game,
01:19Super Bowl, something like that.
01:21They're leaning all over to him.
01:22Do you think people are sleeping on the Chiefs?
01:24I got Patrick Mahomes in like the 14th round of my fantasy draft.
01:27Hey, bro.
01:27Yo, he played 14 games last year.
01:29Okay, but still.
01:31Just tell it.
01:33Yeah.
01:34But like, yeah, they're sleeping.
01:35As long as you got a healthy Pat, you're a contender.
01:40Patrick Mahomes plus 185.
01:42Then Jaden at plus 400 to win comeback player of the year.
01:47And then you know who's in third, odds-wise?
01:50Who's that?
01:50Your boy.
01:52Who's my boy?
01:53Kyler Murray.
01:54He's my boy.
01:56You love him.
01:59Kyler Murray at plus 550.
02:03I think Jaden could win this thing.
02:06Weirdly, according to the CBS Sports article I'm reading,
02:1046% of bets are on Mahomes to win comeback player of the year.
02:16And he played 14 games last year.
02:17Yeah, which is kind of.
02:1814 games.
02:19If you play 14 games every year, I'm happy as hell for you.
02:22Yeah, dude.
02:22Like, I recognize it was a big-time knee injury and he's coming back.
02:26But he played 14 games.
02:28Shouldn't there be a threshold of you have to miss at least 10 games or something?
02:31Hey, man.
02:32Quarterbacks always get the benefit of the doubt.
02:35You know how that goes, bro?
02:36For sure.
02:37So, 46% of the bets are on Mahomes.
02:42Second is Kyler, though, with 12% of the bets on Kyler Murray.
02:47Okay.
02:47So, it seems not a ton of people are betting on Jaden to get it.
02:52Okay.
02:55If Jaden plays, I think the numbers will be there.
03:00Now, Mahomes might get it just on name value.
03:04Yeah.
03:04Like, there's not that many people that have bigger names than Jaden Daniels,
03:07but Mahomes is one of them.
03:08Yeah, totally.
03:09Totally.
03:09Like, of the guys with a bigger Q rating, whatever you want to call that,
03:15Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, Burrow, Stafford,
03:20do you think Caleb has a bigger name value now?
03:23Cover of Madden, seems to be everywhere.
03:27Seems to be.
03:28But we're going to see after this year.
03:31You think Drake May does coming off the Super Bowl?
03:34Not the way it was played.
03:38I don't know, man.
03:39Is there any money?
03:40Would Brian Mitchell come out of his pocket whatsoever?
03:44To bet on that?
03:45No.
03:46No.
03:46To bet on Deshaun Watson being the comeback player of the year at plus $8,000.
03:52No, I love my money.
03:54I don't like just giving it to people.
03:58Ask my nephew.
03:59He mad at me now.
04:00He asked you for cash?
04:01Bro, look, man.
04:03Hey, man.
04:04I'll say, first of all, dude, you never mentioned how you're going to pay it back
04:08or when you're going to pay it back.
04:09So that's the first thing you got to tell me because I don't trust you.
04:15Fair.
04:16Man, you got it.
04:18I might have it, but you're not getting it.
04:20I mean, part of having it is keeping it.
04:23Bam.
04:24I want to run through some bold predictions for the rest of the NFC East,
04:27and maybe we'll do the NFC if we have time.
04:29This is, I think, all from Graziano.
04:33Dallas.
04:34Don't be surprised if rookie safety Caleb Downs never leaves the field.
04:38He writes, okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration,
04:41but the Cowboys believe they can use Downs in a ton of different ways.
04:44In their ideal world, he and veteran safety Jalen Thompson are interchangeable
04:48in the safety and nickel roles.
04:50Downs gets a lot of work at nickel during camp,
04:52and Dallas has faith in his ability to play deep safety.
04:56Okay.
04:56How much do you buy a rebuilt Cowboys defense?
05:00I'm not buying anything now.
05:01I got to see this.
05:03You know, one thing about Dallas, they always seem to have the shiny two,
05:06shiny toys and stuff like that, but I need to see them on the field.
05:09I would just say this.
05:11Caleb Downs came in with a lot of prestige and all.
05:15I don't know how good he's going to be covering a lot of these receivers in the NFL
05:18in a nickel position.
05:20Yeah, when he writes that, he means nickel corner, right?
05:23Yeah.
05:26I want to see that.
05:29Important note here, Caleb on chasing was suited up for practice today.
05:33Right.
05:33Generally, they let a guy dress, but they don't necessarily practice that first day,
05:38but they're kind of out there.
05:40So, you know, the next time those dudes are on the field is, I think, next week, right?
05:46I think we're going to start seeing a bunch of guys on the field,
05:49and we're going to start wondering why the hell they weren't on the field before.
05:52But they're going to be on the field.
05:53And I'm telling you, this cautious thing is a new part of this league today,
05:58and I don't really – that's why it's too hard.
06:01It's hard for me to just, when I see people not out there, to really react to it.
06:07I'm with you, dude.
06:08I also think with chase on, that is certainly good news.
06:16We are going to hear from Dan Quinn here in a few minutes,
06:18and we'll bring that to you live here on the program.
06:23What about this one?
06:24I think you might buy this, B.
06:26This is the bold prediction for the Eagles.
06:29Don't be surprised if they have the best defense in the NFL this season.
06:32I can buy that.
06:35Because, like, I was talking to the guy this morning.
06:37He's like, you know, man, in the NFC wide open, I said, no,
06:40the Eagles are still the best team.
06:41I said, bro, I'm not going to sit up and be stupid.
06:43I said –
06:43NFC East.
06:44In the NFC East.
06:45I said, because their defense gives them that.
06:48You know, I said now that I have questions about their offense,
06:51this year, but their defense, you can't – you can hate them.
06:55You can dislike them.
06:56You've got to give them that respect.
06:58For sure.
06:59I think if you look at – I'm going to read from Graziano here.
07:05The Vic Fangio defense should be an absolute monster.
07:08Sure, the Jonathan Grenard peck strain is a blow to the pass rush,
07:11but he shouldn't be out too long,
07:13and the Eagles expect guys such as Moro Ojomo to contribute there in the meantime.
07:18Jihad Campbell should make an impact in his second season at linebacker, too.
07:22I forgot they even drafted him because Vaughn has played so well.
07:25The secondary, fortified by the free agent addition of Reek Wollin,
07:29is ascending and already Super Bowl tested.
07:31The interior defensive line duo of Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis is a strength,
07:36and the continuity under Fangio is a big reason to believe this unit will only be better.
07:41The Eagles look like the kind of defense that can carry a transitioning offense
07:45through early season growing pains.
07:47They're going to need that.
07:49They're definitely going to need it.
07:50If you look at this team here, they may be kind of built in a similar way,
07:56not exactly, as the Baltimore Ravens when they had Ray Lewis and when they won the Super Bowl,
08:01when they were just scoring more points in the offense.
08:07Agreed.
08:07But that strain may be on those dudes, and we're going to find out,
08:11are they as disciplined as the Ravens' defense was back then?
08:14The Eagles have another pass rusher, this kid Jalix Hunt, I believe is his name,
08:19that I think can really play.
08:22He'll get more of an opportunity, especially with Grenard on the mend.
08:26I have a question, though, about Jalen Carter.
08:29He has all of the tools to dominate kind of all the time.
08:36Why do you think he doesn't?
08:38Some people have that turnoff switch.
08:40They don't go 24-7.
08:42They know they can whip you if they go, but they get tired.
08:47They just get lazy.
08:49They get disinterested.
08:51It happens to a lot of damn good players,
08:54and that's why they never end up the best of the best when they're done.
08:58But, you know, it's just a person like this, okay?
09:02If I'm playing my kids in checkers or whatever, I'm still trying to beat them.
09:07I don't believe in that letting nobody win stuff.
09:10There are people like him who believe I don't have to go all the time.
09:17Every time I'm in competition, I'm trying to win,
09:20no matter what it's about, when it is, or what we're doing.
09:24But some guys think that I can take a break.
09:28And taking that break that one time may be the one moment
09:31that causes you to lose the game or not be as good as you could be.
09:34What's remarkable, I think, is Jordan Davis,
09:43I remember watching him in college and thinking I would take him first overall.
09:48Like, he was just so unbelievable.
09:51Georgia opened the season.
09:52I want to say they played Clemson or something.
09:54I'm going back a number of years now.
09:55I'm probably going back four or five years when I watched him for the Bulldogs.
09:59And I just thought he was unbelievable.
10:01But he had weight issues.
10:02Like, he was just too damn big.
10:05And one thing I applaud him for, he turned that around, man.
10:09He lost the weight and is now in tremendous shape
10:13and has become not only a force but like a motor guy.
10:17And that got him paid big money.
10:19Yeah.
10:20I was kind of surprised when they paid Jalen Carter this offseason, too.
10:24Well, is he starting to take a page out of Jordan's book?
10:29Did he start to do the things they expect him to do,
10:32the things they wanted him to do?
10:33Did they go have a conversation and look, man, you're going to have to do this,
10:36this, and this, man.
10:37You can be the best in the league and you can get paid.
10:39Did he start doing those things?
10:43Listen, if I were a coach or a GM, I'm letting the person,
10:49when I see a guy with that type of ability,
10:51I'm going straight to him and tell him what can make him the highest paid,
10:55what can make him the best of the best.
10:57If I start seeing him doing it, I'm going with it because now that guy is buying in.
11:02But if he doesn't start doing that stuff after I talk to him,
11:06he'll never get big dollars.
11:07The other bold prediction from the NFC East,
11:11don't be surprised if Isaiah Likely is a breakout star in New York.
11:16Tight end, played well in Baltimore,
11:19was kind of split in time with Mark Andrews there.
11:21John Harbaugh gets the job in New York, brings Isaiah Likely up there.
11:26I'm reading now.
11:27Giants coaches light up when talking about Likely,
11:30the free agent signee who came over from Baltimore with Coach John Harbaugh.
11:33They believe he'll be a real asset for Jackson Dart as a receiver
11:36and think he can win in both man and zone coverage.
11:39And they love the way he has embraced and evolved his relationship with Dart
11:43since he has been in New York.
11:44Likely is a regular visitor to the quarterback room,
11:47and the connection he has formed with Dart on and off the field
11:50could pay major dividends.
11:51Likely is a strong candidate to be the team's second leading receiver this season
11:55and could be even more than that if top wide out Malik Nabors
11:58needs time to get up to speed coming off his injury.
12:02Is he also talking to Dart telling him to stop being a damn fullback
12:05and try to be a quarterback?
12:06Because if he don't,
12:08then he won't be getting a lot of passes from Jackson Dart.
12:12You think the injury is almost inevitable for Dart?
12:18The report I saw earlier this year that the coaches are trying to talk to him,
12:21him and what sort of guy, the fullback?
12:24Scadaboo.
12:25Scadaboo about his antics and stuff like that.
12:28They are concerned about him.
12:30He's going to have to learn.
12:31He better stop trying to be like R.G. me and be like some of those other guys.
12:38It's going to be really interesting what happens in New York.
12:41I just don't want Wright Bryan to have fun this year,
12:46especially not when we play him, but like a couple times this year.
12:49Not very often.
12:52You guys, they got to have the hot dog bet.
12:55I know that much.
12:56Oh, also, we're on 980.
12:58Now we know.
12:59I just saw Monumentals showing Max on TV.
13:02Shout out to everybody listening to us on Team 980.
13:05Yeah, we've been on 980 for a while now.
13:08Yo, what do you make?
13:11I don't know.
13:12Apparently there's a video or something.
13:13Josh Jacobs, Packers running back, is on the commissioner's exempt list.
13:18There's allegations of domestic violence.
13:21How big of a deal is – we're not talking about the event that occurred.
13:25I don't know anything about it.
13:27I hope all parties are okay.
13:29How big of a deal is that to the football team when you're starting running back,
13:34like an established top ten?
13:36That's a hell of a deal because they build offers around that running game.
13:40So, yes, that's a deal.
13:45And there's not a running back on that team anywhere close to his ability to chew up yards.
13:51He can block.
13:52He catches the ball at the backfield.
13:54Nobody's as good as he is.
13:56So, yeah, you got some guys that might do those things,
13:59but do you have one guy who can be a workhorse like he is?
14:04That's a good question.
14:05I don't know that answer.
