There has been a 20% increase in the number of men living with prostate cancer since 2020 from 500,000 to 600,000, according to a new study. Medical advisor to Macmillan Cancer Support Dr. Anthony Cunliffe says this is due to a growing and ageing population, rather than increasing risk. Report by Keechl. 00:00Well, I mean, it's quite surprising, quite alarming that we've seen such a significant increase in the numbers of people
00:06living with prostate cancer.
00:08So an increase of 20%, so between 2020 and now. So that's going from 500,000 to 600,000.
00:16So it's quite a significant increase we're seeing. I think we have to be clear.
00:19We're not saying that there's more prostate cancer out there, but we have a growing population.
00:25We have an aging population and prostate cancer is more common in older men.
00:30But we've also seen a lot of campaigns to try and increase the awareness of prostate cancer symptoms amongst men
00:37to try and get men to present and get tested earlier.
00:40And we've also seen some, you know, some well-known celebrities like Jeremy Clarkson and Sir Chris Hoy being diagnosed
00:45and being really happy to talk about it in the media.
00:48And that's one of the best ways that we can increase awareness and really encourage people to go and have
00:52a chat with the GP or another health care professional and then be tested if that's appropriate.
