00:07The New York Jets had the first of two joint practices against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
00:12before they faced them in their preseason game this Friday.
00:14This is Gangs All Here, and we're here to react at day one of practice.
00:17I'm Ryan Sampson.
00:19That's Frankie Viteriti from U Stadium.
00:20No cause today.
00:21We will actually be at Jets training camp, Jets fans, tomorrow.
00:25Myself, Frankie, cause you're getting the whole trio.
00:29After practice report from Florham Park at the facility, we'll be talking about what's going on, what we see tomorrow.
00:38But today, Frankie and I are going to talk about what the heck happened at practice.
00:42But before we get to any of it, Frankie, how are you doing today, bud?
00:46Doing pretty good, man.
00:47Doing pretty good.
00:48It's a long week, and it's only Tuesday.
00:50But, hey, you know, tomorrow's going to be fun, though.
00:52I can't wait.
00:53I haven't been to Jets practice in a long time.
00:55It feels like, I don't know, maybe three, four years.
00:57So, that should be fun.
00:59And, you know, it's going to get spicy, because it was spicy today.
01:02So, tomorrow, you know, those feelings are going to carry over a little bit.
01:05Yeah, look, I think that's a good place to start, is with the fights that were breaking out numerous times
01:10today.
01:11Following along on Jets' Twitter from The Beat and from fans there.
01:15So many fights are breaking out.
01:17A lot of it from Godke, the right tackle.
01:20I think I'm saying Godke.
01:21Godke.
01:22The right tackle.
01:23Godke.
01:23Godke from the right tackle from Tampa Bay seemed to be in a lot of them.
01:27I heard his comments after practice.
01:29He kind of was blaming David Bailey for starting the fights, which, you know, is what it is.
01:34But, also, at the same time, I saw that Godke was false starting a bunch, because he couldn't keep up
01:39with David Bailey in the one-on-ones and also in team drills.
01:42So, we're going to dive into all of it.
01:43But, first, I want to start, though, besides the fights, Frankie, which I think is always, like, it's part of
01:50these joint practices.
01:52Like, you kind of expect it to happen.
01:53If it doesn't happen in a joint practice, you're kind of like, are these guys just going through the motions?
01:58You want a little bit of passion and fire in these guys.
02:01So, I kind of enjoyed seeing the notes that there's a lot of fights that broke out.
02:05Yeah, me too, man.
02:07Yeah, I mean, this team, they need some fire, man.
02:09I mean, you saw last year, it didn't really seem like they were really ever intimidating their opponents or even
02:15trying to.
02:16It just seemed like they were going through the motions.
02:18And, if you look at the kind of team that Aaron Glenn put together here, he wants guys flying all
02:23over the place.
02:24He has guys on defense that play multiple positions.
02:27They obviously want to establish a running game.
02:30They've invested in that front line.
02:32You gave Tittman that money.
02:33You gave Brees money to run behind him.
02:35I mean, like, they have to be a tough team.
02:36I don't know if this is the most finesse unit we've seen.
02:42So, you know, the one thing you're going to need is those guys up front and in the middle to
02:46really, really get after it.
02:48And that starts with sort of things like that happened today.
02:52I mean, you want everyone to be tough from the guys up front to the guys in the back.
02:56So, I like that the team came in today with the impression that we're not going to get bullied, even
03:04if they got beat in practice.
03:06It looks like maybe the Bucs got the best of them, but they're not going to get bullied.
03:09And I think that's a good message.
03:10You think that the Buccaneers got the best of the Jets today, according to all the reports from Twitter?
03:16Yeah, it seemed like it.
03:17It seemed like the offense had a leg up over the defense, and it seemed like where the defense did
03:23make plays at times, my boy making a bunch of plays.
03:26But it didn't seem like the Jets were competing at the same level as the Bucs.
03:33Based on what I read, I was not there for the record.
03:36So, we'll have a better sense of that tomorrow.
03:38But from all the reports, Ryan, it seemed like the Bucs got the better of the Jets today.
03:44What I'll say about this is I think I got a different sense of perspective from reading everything and reacting
03:51to everything off Twitter is I think the defenses were ahead of both offenses today.
03:57And I think the Jets defense actually had a pretty good day from all reports today.
04:00So, I wouldn't say the Bucs had any leg up on the Jets, to be honest with you today.
04:04Baker, I think, had one touchdown pass total to Ibuka against Andre Sisko.
04:09But overall, I like and I'm encouraged the fact that the Jets defense looked pretty good today.
04:16But we're going to get into Bailey and the Jets defense in the second part of this.
04:20The first part, though, what was alarming to me was that Geno Smith had not one, not two, but three
04:27interceptions in practice today, Frankie.
04:30I think this goes into the larger discussion of Geno Smith and the outlook for him this season, right?
04:35We wonder what kind of year can he have?
04:38Can he have a bounce back season like he did in 22, 23, 24 before the really, really bad year
04:44in 25 with the Raiders, which led to them getting the number one pick?
04:49I think, personally, reading everything and hearing everything, Geno is what he is at this point.
04:56He's going to give you really, really good days where it's like, wow, that looks actually like a top 15
05:02quarterback in the NFL right now, maybe even top 12.
05:05And then he's going to give you days like today where it's like, that was not good.
05:09It was not good to start.
05:11I know he got better in red zone when they were doing 11-on-11, and he actually threw a
05:17couple touchdown passes, and that was encouraging.
05:19So I'm not going to be fully negative here, Jets fans.
05:21Like, I know you guys love hitting us up in the comments.
05:23Frankie and I are way too negative on Geno and whatnot.
05:25And Frankie might be negative here in a minute when I toss to him, but I'm going to say this.
05:30I think you kind of have to be expected and prepared that Geno is going to have bad days where
05:37he throws multiple interceptions and doesn't look good.
05:39And you got to be prepared when, wow, he can really stretch the field.
05:43And, wow, he's picking apart this defense and making accurate on-time throws.
05:48So it's kind of what you're going to live with Geno.
05:51So what do you think, Frankie, from just day one of joint practice against the Bucs with Geno?
05:55Yeah, I mean, listen, and my comment about the Bucs winning the day had to do with that, right?
06:00It had to do with Geno just coming out, throwing a bunch of interceptions.
06:03The team, by reports, didn't have all that much energy in the beginning.
06:08And then, obviously, you have Klubnik come in and they looked better, so then it might have evened things out.
06:12Yeah, the defense makes some plays.
06:13So in totality, yeah, I'm kind of talking just about the ones, though, here.
06:18And, listen, you're spot on with what Geno Smith is.
06:21Geno Smith's going to bring the good, the bad, and the ugly.
06:25I kind of label him that way.
06:27So you're going to have all three of those elements throughout a season.
06:31He had an ugly year last year, but the year before that was very good.
06:35So, again, you don't really know what you're really going to get with Geno.
06:39The thing I'll say about him is it seemed like he had bounced back a bit after those early interceptions.
06:45One Garrett apparently fell, so do you really count that?
06:48One was in seven on seven also, so it's not...

06:51You know, you're not talking 11 on 11, so it's a little different.

06:54But, again, I'm concerned when it comes to the offense, Ryan.
06:58I'm just concerned with what we spoke about on our show last week.
07:02It's when things are going bad, are you going to be able to get back up and punch him back
07:07in the mouth?
07:08And it seemed like they kind of did that today.
07:09Yeah, it seemed like they did, right?
07:12Yeah, but that's after three interceptions.
07:14So you'd like for that to happen after interception one or two.
07:19You know, you don't want to keep really snowballing that thing out of control.
07:23I'm not yet convinced that this team needed a quarterback like a Geno Smith.
07:30I think the jury's still out.
07:32I know what he can do.
07:33We know what he did in Seattle.
07:35We know about his 70% completion percentage.
07:37We know about the years he's thrown over 4,000 yards.
07:41Getting his second contract in this league matters.
07:44But I think what really matters with this team is how are you going to bring those young guys up
07:51in this system
07:52and have them develop for this year and the following and the following so you can make a run at
07:59this thing at some point.
08:01I think that's really where that conversation comes into play.
08:04I mean, I just ā I don't see Geno here as a long-term answer, not to get into, like,
08:09general points with Geno.
08:10But if he's not going to really deliver in a win-now sort of, you know, year for him, he's
08:18in a win-now year.
08:19You know, Geno's not here to develop.
08:20Geno's going to come here, try to do what he can to maybe get another contract if he can, to
08:25maybe get an extension.
08:26I mean, think about it from his perspective.
08:28He's on a two-year deal.
08:29They have an out really after one if they want.
08:33What's his motivation?
08:34His motivation is can he win with the Jets this year and give them options for him in year, you
08:40know, two, three, four of his Jets tenure?
08:43Maybe they don't want to think about getting a quarterback from his perspective.
08:46I'm saying we're looking at it like this guy's just here to raise that floor, but we're going to look
08:53at a rookie option no matter what next year.
08:56So, I mean, you have those two differing things kind of coming together.
08:59In my opinion, if Geno's not really going to be able to raise that floor, then he doesn't serve a
09:06real purpose here.
09:08That's just the reality.
09:10There's a lot of quarterbacks in this league.
09:11If you wanted, you know, to strike lightning in a bottle, you could have maybe have looked at a Kyler
09:17Murray, which I know who you hate.
09:19But I'm saying you could have looked at an option like that that I think has some upside maybe.
09:25I don't know where Geno's upside is.
09:27I really don't.
09:27I think he's a gunslinger, but that comes with a lot of bad.
09:32And you're going to see him throw a ton of interceptions this year.
09:35You just are.
09:36Yeah.
09:37He did it last year, right?
09:38He led the NFL last year in interceptions.
09:41He's also leading the league in sacks too, right?
09:43So, I mean, if the Jets can keep him upright, you would hope that the turnovers would be limited, not
09:48as much as last year.
09:50I agree he's a gunslinger.
09:52I think it's a good point by you.
09:53But I think you really can't overturn and play Monday morning quarterback again on the decisions the Jets made in
09:59the offseason.
09:59There really was no other options out there.
10:01I don't think Kyler Murray was ever going to come to New York.
10:04I don't think he wanted to deal with this media circus.
10:06I don't think he wanted to be in that situation.
10:09And he's actually been named the starter today, which we'll get into in a sec.
10:13But that, for him, was an actual job where he could play with a good coach in Kevin O'Connell,
10:19can play in a system with actual real weapons.
10:21And I'm not saying the Jets don't have weapons, everyone.
10:23The Jets do have weapons.
10:25But there's so much dysfunction when it comes to this organization.
10:30Kyler was coming out of a hot mess in Arizona.
10:31I just don't think, for his public image, he was ever going to come here.
10:34So, I don't think there were really any other options for the Jets in terms of finding another quarterback that
10:41can be a reliable starter for you and run the system that Frank Reich's going to run.
10:45I think Geno provides all that.

10:55I hope you're not burned too much still from last year.
10:58Like, we watched, the last couple years, Frankie, what we watched was rough.
11:04It was beyond rough.
11:05It was like sandpaper on the eyes.
11:07I know Rodgers was here in 24, had a nice statistical season, but let's be real, people.
11:14It was disappointing for all of us to watch.
11:16He refused to stretch the field.
11:18Geno's going to do that.
11:19Geno's going to take shots downfield.
11:20He's going to be aggressive.
11:21Now, is it going to bite him in the ass sometimes?
11:23Absolutely.
11:24But you saw today, really rough start for the offense.
11:27There was a lot of false starts.
11:29There was some ton of motion they're using before the snap, which I'm encouraged by.
11:33But at the same time, there's a lot of pre-snap penalties and things that you can't have and
11:39things that you have to figure out as an offense.
11:41And I hope that Frank Reich holds those guys accountable and can get them going in the
11:45right direction.
11:46So, I'm not going to react too much off of practice one.
11:49I want to see improvement tomorrow, Frankie, when we're there.
11:52And maybe there's a little bit more synergy between Garrett and A.D.
11:56Mitchell, who I heard was burning corners left and right, and Geno Smith distributing the
12:00ball to all those playmakers.
12:02Yeah.
12:03The thing is, Ryan, I think the frustration from me and I think a lot of fans or a good
12:08majority of fans, let's call them, that are negative on this team, it stems from us being
12:14sold these quarterbacks.
12:16Honestly, for now, it seems like almost 20 years.
12:20You want to go back to when Geno Smith was drafted, go to Sam Darnold, that didn't work
12:24here, Zach Wilson, they tried to sell us, Aaron Rodgers, they tried to sell us, then
12:29they tried to sell us Justin Fields, and now they're trying to sell us Geno Smith.
12:33I can't blame fans for-
12:36But what are they selling you, Geno Smith, reality-wise?
12:38That this guy's an average starting quarterback.
12:39I mean, he probably could be an average starting quarterback if all things break the right
12:43way.
12:45His average is, remember, average is 16 to 20, I'll give you average.
12:50I think that's 100% within Geno's capability this year, 100% within his capability.
12:55It's within his capability, for sure.
12:58It's just, is it a reality?
13:01I mean, we're not going to know until he plays this year.
13:04Yeah.
13:04But you can't blame people for looking at the offseason and seeing some of the things that
13:09have happened with Geno, that yes, some of the stuff has been overblown, obviously.
13:15But you see that, then you see these, you know, these joint practices, he throws three
13:19interceptions.
13:20It's like, all right, here we go again.
13:21I'm not saying that's going to happen.
13:23I'm just saying, like, people that are optimistic about this team, God bless you.
13:28We have to see it.
13:29Like, I am not, we spoke the other night about Aaron Rodgers, right?
13:34They tried to tell us how great Rodgers was here, and we knew he wasn't.
13:39We saw it.
13:40He was fine.
13:40It was okay.
13:41He might have been an average player here at the position when he was here, maybe even
13:46below.
13:46But Ryan, this team and this coach, they have to start fast.
13:52And I really hope for their sake that they do, because I'm telling you, this fan base,
13:57unfortunately, and maybe that's why we're always in this position, because we have no
14:00patience, but they're not going to have the luxury ride to, you know, tell us when
14:07they're, you know, two and six, that things are going to get better, and this is why.
14:13I think we've passed that point.
14:16And I'm not just saying this based on this three interception thing in practice, whatever
14:20that happened.
14:21I remember we beat up on the Giants with Rodgers in that joint practice, and we even beat up
14:27on the Commanders years ago when they got Jaden Daniels.
14:30We made him look bad in the joint practice.
14:32So it doesn't really mean anything, these joint practices per se.
14:36But, Ryan, I can't sit here, and I don't know how, honestly, people sit there and see
14:44negative things about this team and just say, oh, it'll be all right.
14:49Like, no, it won't, because it never has been all right.
14:52Just being honest.
14:53You're going down the way negative path right now.

14:58Like, it's training camp.
14:59It's one preseason practice against the Buccaneers.

15:10He was one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL last year.

15:34And another thing, Aaron Glenn actually announced today that he is going to start the starters

15:58Now, we got the news that Kyler Murray was announced as starter, and I know you guys are
16:02like, again, why are you talking about that?
16:03Well, Benjamin Solick on Twitter, I don't know if you follow him on social media.
16:08He's a big timer in the NFL and content creation game.
16:11He decided to tweet out, you're a team with an aging starter at quarterback, Steelers, Rams,
16:20Jets.
16:20How much would you offer in a trade right now for J.J. McCarthy, who is now the backup
16:27quarterback to Kyler Murray?
16:29And I say this, nothing.
16:34Nothing.
16:35J.J. McCarthy is an all-time bad bust.
16:39That guy has no business being in the NFL.
16:42I don't even think he's worthy of a backup quarterback spot.
16:44I'd put him in the same spot as Will Levis, where this guy doesn't belong in the NFL.
16:50I never saw it in Michigan.
16:53I never understood the hype around this kid.
16:55He's not the most athletic guy.
16:57He doesn't have the strongest arm.
16:59He's not super accurate.
17:00We saw it over and over again last year in Minnesota.
17:03They got bit in the ass because they decided not to pay Sam Darnold.
17:07And what does Sam Darnold do?
17:09Wins the Super Bowl with the Seahawks.
17:11So I'm happy Kyler Murray won that starting job.
17:14It was clear as day who the better quarterback was in that spot.
17:16But if you're telling me if the Jets should entertain a trade right now for J.J. McCarthy
17:23because of the potential of him because he was a first-round pick
17:26and drafted 10th overall, no freaking way.
17:30I wouldn't even give up a seventh-round pick for J.J. McCarthy.

17:37You know, I half agree with you.
17:40So I believe what you're saying.
17:42But the other half, listen, in this league,
17:45and considering the kid has only started really one season
17:49and didn't even play the entire year,
17:51listen, I'd give up a fifth-rounder for him to come in and compete.

18:00I'm not a big J.J. McCarthy guy.
18:01I actually agree with you.
18:02I don't think he's accurate.
18:03I think he was in a very, very advantageous position in Michigan
18:09where they either had the lead
18:11or they had some extremely good leaders there
18:13and one of the best coaches in college football history in Harbaugh.
18:16So I think you're not going to get in a better position than that as a quarterback.
18:21But he was drafted 10th overall, like you said.
18:24Does, is a big body kid.
18:27Does make some throws at times and is a little bit of a gamer.
18:31When the game's on the line or when his back's against the wall,
18:33he finds a way to make some plays.
18:36Has a lot of work to do.
18:38So if you're going to look at J.J. McCarthy,
18:40you're really bringing him in and you're redoing his mechanics
18:43like Josh Allen did when he got to the NFL.
18:45You're really redoing everything, rebuilding the kid to a degree.
18:49Maybe he's throwing motions off, everything.
18:52And then you're going to have a little bit of a project on your hands.
18:54So for that sake, I'll give up a fifth rounder
18:59and probably a fourth rounder also.
19:01I mean, we used a fourth rounder on Cade Klubnick, right?
19:04So why not?
19:05Third, I wouldn't go because we've had this conversation on our show
19:10about third rounders and they could be starters.
19:12They could not.
19:13However, you want to judge that.
19:14But fourth rounders, we can confidently say or not, guys,
19:18are really bringing in day one, looking to start.
19:21And if you're looking at a quarterback, Ryan, with some upside,
19:25and this to me is a teardown rebuild with McCarthy,
19:28knowing he has some of that gamer to him
19:31and some people have said clutch factor ability,
19:37you got to look at that.
19:41They're not going to give you JJ for a fourth rounder though also.
19:44Like they're going to look at the market
19:45and there's going to be a team out there, I'm sure,
19:48that'd be willing to give up a conditional three
19:50that can turn into a two if McCarthy plays or starts.
19:55Yeah, man, dude, he's a 10th overall pick, right?
19:57I mean, yeah, I was a ā I thought ā
20:00when I went to the combine years ago, right,
20:02I saw Bo Nix and JJ McCarthy on the same field in Indianapolis
20:07throwing the football, and I go,
20:08there is no chance in hell I would ever draft that kid, JJ,
20:11over that guy, Bo Nix.
20:13And they did, and I didn't understand why.
20:15But the NFL, when you're drafting 10th overall as a quarterback
20:21and you only start a one year, someone will give ā
20:23you know, someone will give up something for you.
20:25You saw it with ā who's the quarterback?
20:29Josh Rosen.
20:30Remember, he ā
20:31I'm old enough to remember when him ā
20:33he was the 10th overall pick.
20:34He was terrible.
20:37Yeah, but then they trade.

20:42They gave him a second-round pick.
20:44They gave him the second-round pick, 62nd overall,
20:47which the Cardinals used to select wide receiver Andy Isabella,
20:50which turned out to be nothing, and a 2025th-round pick.

20:54Like, he'll have some of that what-if value, you know?
20:58I hear you, though.
20:59So, I don't think ā I wouldn't be ā I'm not at all intrigued with us trading
21:04for J.J. McCarthy.
21:05I am not.
21:06I am not a fan.
21:07I agree with you wholeheartedly on all your points.
21:10But if you could give up a fifth or a fourth for the kid to compete,
21:17eh, I don't ā I would entertain that.
21:22I think that's ā look, I don't think there's any price that's good enough
21:25for me to give for J.J. McCarthy.
21:27I just wouldn't touch him with a 10-foot pole.
21:29Kevin O'Connell, I think, is one of the most trusted quarterback whisperers
21:32right now and developers in the NFL.
21:34People trust him as a coach, how he calls an offense.
21:36And if he can't get the best out of J.J. McCarthy and can't get him to play well,
21:40I don't think there's really any solving for J.J. McCarthy.
21:43And the Jets have zero history developing a quarterback,
21:46especially a used product.
21:48Like you said, they try to sell us an Aaron Rodgers.
21:51They try ā we've done this before where you try to import a quarterback
21:55from another spot and see if it works here.
21:57It never works here with the Jets.
21:59I would never go near this option.
22:01I don't think it's realistic.
22:02I don't think Aaron Glenn will even entertain it.
22:05And I think it's fun fan talk for us.
22:08But, like, for real, J.J. McCarthy, good luck, man.
22:11I hope it works out for you somewhere.
22:13But I think his days are clearly numbered in Minnesota.

22:19Kevin O'Connell is trying to coach for his job.
22:21They fired their GM in the offseason.
22:23It's a disaster over there.
22:24So they're just trying to win as many games if they can.
22:27But McCarthy clearly is going down that road of being a top 10 pick bust in the NFL.

22:35I will say this really quick about J.J. McCarthy, just a little tidbit.
22:38Knowing his agency and knowing some of the stuff that they were putting out there before he got drafted,
22:46there was a lot of talk about, a lot of puff pieces about J.J.
22:50and that the agency's very involved and they wanted him to start
22:53and they weren't going to take, you know, they weren't going to like a team, excuse me,
22:58that took him and didn't start him or give him an opportunity.
23:01Trust me right now, that agency, WME Sports, I believe is the agency still,
23:08they are not going to be okay with the Vikings announcing Kyler Murray being the starter
23:14before they've played in a preseason game.
23:17They are not going to like that.
23:18I guarantee you.
23:20So the J.J. McCarthy being available via trade conversation, people might say it's unrealistic.
23:26I actually think it's extremely realistic.
23:28And if you put a gun to my head, I think he's going to be shipped out of there before
23:32week one.
23:33Wouldn't shock me either.
23:34Just throwing that out there, yeah.
23:35Again, if I were the Jets, don't even entertain this conversation.

24:09And if he doesn't play well early on, Cade Klubnick, then I think you can see the Jets being aggressive
24:14on the other backup quarterbacks in the NFL, not named J.J. McCarthy.
24:18Like, guys who, you know, are on roster bubbles who are that third quarterback.
24:22I think the Jets, like Kaz said, are going to try and swing and get another backup quarterback because Cade
24:27Klubnick might not be ready in that spot.
24:30But, again, it's that weird thing where it's like, let's see what the kid's got.
24:34You know, I've heard Conor Rodgers be like, I don't think he's really that, you know, he is what he
24:39is at this point.
24:40Like, he's had some okay plays, and he's also had some not-so-great plays.
24:45But we'll see.
24:45Well, you know, Ry, you know, Kevin O'Connell is going to shoot his old roommate or Darren Muge is
24:50going to shoot his old roommate a little text there.
24:53Say, hey, can you give me some intel on this kid?
24:55And that'll be a pretty important, I think, variable.
24:59Yeah, and whether Darren Muge looks at kicking those tires.
25:03And I'm sure Kevin O'Connell has a strong opinion one way or the other.
25:08It might be negative.
25:09It might be this kid, he's broken.
25:12I don't know what to do with him anymore.
25:14Or we're going to go with, that's all we want with Kyler.
25:16Or it's, I had no choice but to go with Kyler, but the kid's got a ton of potential.
25:21Someone should kick the tires on him.
25:23So, hey, it's going to be interesting, though.

25:26And look, I think it's a great point by you with the Muge O'Connell connection.
25:31But I think O'Connell's benching McCarthy for Kyler Murray, I should tell you everything you need to know.

25:40Frankie, we highlighted your guy, David Bailey, last week and how Kaz said he is, quote, the real deal.
25:47And compared him to the other rookies that he's seen at Jets training camp in history when he's covered this
25:53team to Gary Wilson, Sauce Gardner, Quinton Williams.
25:59And Frankie, today was like their actual test for Bailey.
26:02And he passed with flying colors from all reports.
26:06Look at this guy.
26:07You got the jersey already.
26:10Hall of Famer, baby.
26:11Hall of Famer.
26:12Lawrence Taylor Jr.
26:13Are we doing it?
26:14I don't want to jinx the kid.
26:16I don't want to jinx him.
26:17But, damn, this is the only jersey I've ever really loved in my life.
26:20I'm going to sleep with this thing.
26:21I mean, you know, I don't know.
26:24I just always have it around me.
26:25It makes me feel good.
26:26Look, I'll give you your flowers for a little bit, but let's be real.
26:29One joint practice and all those other practices.
26:32It's practice.
26:34It's got to be done in a game.
26:35But, Jets fans, you got to be excited about this kid.
26:39And, look, before we get into this, look at what veteran, three-time now, Jet,
26:45DeBario Davis had to say about the number two pick.
26:48When you draft players, I've been around a ton of rookies, you know,
26:55seven to ten every year for 15 years.
26:58You know, I've seen some who were projected high, you know,
27:02not play up to that level.
27:04I've seen some who were projected low and played above that level.
27:10He looks like a number two pick.
27:12He looks like everything that's been advertised or more about him.
27:18I think his instincts of not only rushing the quarterback, but just getting to the football in general.
27:26The way that he plays the run with savviness.
27:29And I think he already has a lot of elements of a pro.
27:37He's mature for his age.
27:39I don't know if that has to do with how he was raised or his path and his journey.
27:44But he's been phenomenal to work with and alongside.
27:48And I think he's going to help our football team exponentially, and we need it.
27:52And so I'm excited to see how he plays this year and beyond.
27:58I mean, look, when Demario Davis praising.
28:01That's the nice of the things you're going to say about somebody.
28:03When you got that kind of praise from the veteran, the leader of this group, that's impressive.
28:09And this kid continues to just build upon this awesome summer and training camp he's having, Frankie, before his rookie
28:15season.
28:16I got to be honest with you, man.
28:17Today was my pinnacle of, like, damn.
28:21The Jets might have gotten themselves a legit pass rusher.
28:25A game wrecker on the edge.
28:28He had Luke Gadecki in absolute spin cycle mode today.
28:34It started off on one-on-ones today, Frank.
28:37Gadecki said after practice that Bailey called him out to face him one-on-one before the one-on-one
28:44started.
28:45Gadecki says he won the rep.
28:46Every other report says that Bailey won that rep.
28:49And then the fight started right after that when Bailey slapped him across the head or tapped him on the
28:54head.
28:54Give him a little pat on the head.
28:54Give him a pat on the head saying, hey.
28:56Nice try, man.
28:56Nice try.
28:58And, look, that's like demon hour stuff, man.
29:01That gets you pumped up to watch.
29:03Like, it raises the floor of the defense, right?
29:07If Bailey becomes what you envision him and what everyone else is saying he has looked like,
29:13and that first step is so lethal as a pass rush specialist, I mean, it's going to take the floor
29:20of this defense up, Frankie.
29:21It's going to elevate everything they do.
29:23And we got great news today also.
29:25Like, I know to sidebar this a little bit, but, like, Joseph Asai got activated off pup.
29:30He's not going to practice this week, but they're going to ease him in.
29:32That's a nice addition to bring back.
29:34They gave him a lot of money in the offseason.
29:36I'm anxious and excited.
29:38In the next couple weeks, we're going to see Asai and Bailey on opposite ends of each other with Will
29:44McDonald now going in the rotational role like he belongs.
29:48His defense might have some potential here, Frankie, with David Bailey, but what do you think about today?
29:54Him just dominating again against another team, not his own teammates.
29:58Yeah, man.
29:59I mean, listen, I just love the fact that he practiced also today because he had rolled his ankle a
30:05few days ago,
30:06and there were reports that he may not practice today.
30:09I mean, he wanted to be right out there.
30:12And that's the one thing when I looked at David Bailey that I loved as a prospect.
30:18He loves to just play football, not on social media.
30:24He's not an events guy.
30:26He's not, you know, tweeting or doing lives on TikTok.
30:30He is a football player.
30:32He doesn't wear gloves.
30:33You know, he's an old-school kind.
30:35I want to put my hand in the dirt.
30:36I want to stand up, and I want to get after the quarterback.
30:39And the thing that DeMario said about him that is another part of him as a body of work that
30:47I also loved as a prospect,
30:48outside of what he does on the field, is how mature he is when you listen to him talk.
30:54And DeMario said, you know, he goes, he already has the elements of a pro.
31:00He's mature for his age.
31:02I don't know how he was raised, but whoever raised that kid did a phenomenal job.
31:07He has a brother I brought up that went to Harvard, just saying.
31:11You know, he's like, he, the family has taken the children seriously.
31:15The children take their jobs or their opportunities seriously.
31:20They only want to win and focus on the things that are, you know, in front of them.
31:25Those are the kind of guys that just become some great players.
31:28I'm sure DeMario sees a lot of himself in Bailey because DeMario was very similar when he came into the
31:33league.
31:33So, I love that DeMario-Bailey combination on and off the field.
31:40I think DeMario is going to help David Bailey mature a ton, as mature as he is, even more, as
31:46he gets into his mid-20s,
31:48which, you know, these guys are all young, right?
31:50These guys, it feels like more than half this roster is under the age of 25.
31:54So, DeMario is going to help out David Bailey tremendously.
31:58And, Ryan, the guy is just a beast, man.
32:01The guy, listen, he is not, when people talk about these speed rushers, yes, he's a speed rusher.
32:10But he's strong as hell also.
32:12So, good luck if you overset a little bit.
32:15He will club you.
32:17He will rip you.
32:17He will bust that spin move out underneath.
32:20He does the bull rush move, too.
32:21He did that today, too.
32:23Of course, he does.
32:23Yeah, speed to power.
32:25He won on the inside today to get a sack on Baker, I was reading.
32:29This is the kind of guy we've needed.
32:31Now, it's going to probably take a few years before we really see the impact of Bailey equals winning games
32:41or getting to the playoffs or winning playoff games.
32:45So, it might take a little bit, but these are the kind of guys that you need
32:49and the kind of guys that teams like the Bills have been looking for to get them over the top.
32:56There's a reason the Bills brought in Von Miller.
32:57It didn't work out.
32:58You know, you need a guy like this to anchor your pass rush.
33:03Look at last year, Ryan, the AFC.
33:05The number one seed was the Broncos.
33:08Who was their best defensive player was a guy very similar and comps to David Bailey.
33:14And I think Bailey could be better than him, by the way, in Nick Benito.
33:17I really do.
33:18I do.
33:19I think Bailey could be better than Nick Benito.
33:21I think as highly of David Bailey as an edge as really anyone besides for Miles Garrett and Von Miller
33:28that I've seen coming out of the draft in the last, you know, 10 to 15 years.
33:32That's just me.
33:33I just think the first step is that explosive.
33:36Everything else is going to be set up for him.
33:38I hope, I pray, we should all that.
33:41He stays healthy, as I do to really any NFL player, whether they're on my team or not.
33:45That's always ā I always love when the league's just healthy.
33:47I think that's important.
33:49But with him specifically, he's just ā the more he plays right, the better he's going to get.
33:53He's gotten better every single year of his college career.
33:56From his time in Stanford up until last year, he just got better and better and better
34:00until he was the clear-cut, best edge player in the game last year.
34:05And I think he's going to get there in the NFL eventually.
34:07I do.
34:08Yeah, look.
34:09In the AFC because Miles Garrett will be in the NFC.
34:11So, yeah.
34:12No, no, look.
34:13I mean, I'll say this.
34:15If the Jets were able to find at the number two overall spot potentially an all-time great pass rusher
34:21for their franchise, just put that in perspective.
34:24I mean, they've had some great, great pass rushers.
34:28Mark Gastineau, Joe Klecko, Sean Ellis, you know, John Abraham, Mo Lewis, Calvin Pace I even really liked.
34:36But if he can be up there with Gastineau, like, it's a home run.
34:42Oh, yeah.
34:42It's a home run.
34:43Definitely.
34:43The kid seriously has potential.
34:46I am anxious again to see tomorrow, that first step against joint practice, see what he does one-on-ones
34:52and just continue to see how he's going to progress.
34:55But, Frankie, you can't be more excited for a number two overall pick.
35:00I'll admit I was wrong.
35:01I was wrong on the player.
35:02I did not think he was going to be that great.
35:05But early returns, man, and these are super early returns.
35:09Again, we are reacting to the first day of joint practices.
35:12But everything leading up to this point, what Frankie is saying and has said about the kid and the player,
35:18has come to fruition.
35:20And I'm just looking forward to seeing how that evolves.
35:22And then when game day comes, Frankie, week one, that Tennessee Titans O-line stinks.
35:26And I think Bailey should have a field day against Malik Willis chasing him all day long.
35:32It'll make a lot of fun.
35:36It'll make our Sundays more enjoyable.
35:38Let me just say that.
35:39Like, if David Bailey is the real deal, it's going to make our Sundays more enjoyable.
35:44Plain and simple, folks.

35:47And, Rye, like, on our show, too, man, it's like I was going on and on about Bailey the entire
35:52offseason.
35:52And it wasn't only because how much I loved the prospect in David Bailey.
35:57I thought this team needed a player like David Bailey.
36:00You're looking at linebacker, not necessarily a need.
36:04You brought in DeMario.
36:05You had Jamie and Sherwood here.
36:06You could find linebackers, which is why I wasn't as in tune with the Arvel Reese thing.
36:11They just got rid of Jermaine Johnson.
36:14By the way, we traded Jermaine Johnson straight up for Tavondre Sweat.
36:18That wasn't going to be looked at, you know, as the best trade in the world.
36:21But we weren't going to pay Jermaine.
36:23They put Will McDonald on this fifth-year option.
36:26Yo, man, you need a pass rusher.
36:28You know, Arvel Reese might make sense for the Giants because that was who it was between.
36:34It was between Arvel Reese and David Bailey, let's be honest.
36:36They weren't going to take, you know, Jeremiah Love or, you know, Carnell Tate.
36:42That wasn't going to happen.
36:43Or Sonny Stiles.
36:44Eh, I mean, come on.
36:46I mean, talking about where the Jets were at at that time, they wanted a guy to play on the
36:49outside, clearly.
36:50So, it was between those two, and I just think when it comes down to a player that gets to
36:58the quarterback
36:58and one that does a little of everything and could get to the quarterback, maybe,
37:03I'm taking the guy that's going to always get to the quarterback.
37:05That's just me, and that's why edge players go second overall, and linebackers don't.
37:10Not to rehash the point, but there was nothing about Bailey's game that I looked at that I thought was,
37:16you know,
37:18a negative, including his ability to stop the run or his gap assignment control.
37:23I thought that was more of a discipline thing and a system thing more than it was a he's-not
37:29-able-to-do-it thing
37:30or he's not strong enough to do it.
37:33He's not Will McDonald that he's 235 pounds soaking wet or he looks like a tight end out there playing
37:39edge.
37:40No, the guy looks like a bull.
37:41He's built like a bull.
37:42He's a big guy.
37:43He's strong, and he just needs to learn the technique.
37:47And I thought it was just a seamless fit here with Carl Dunbar,
37:51who was probably the most underrated thing this team did in the offseason.
37:55And I just think he's going to keep getting better and better,
37:58and I like the veteran leaders we brought in to kind of, you know, bring him along.
38:02So we're going to have fun this year, right?
38:04Tomorrow we're going to have some fun, too, watching David Bailey, baby.
38:07That's going to be good times.
