00:00Big G, he's no stranger to the IL, so with the calf issue, how does that specifically impact a hitter
00:08of power like Giancarlo Stanton?
00:11The calf is important for, the most important thing it serves for is push off.
00:15So as he's making his turn, that's where some of the power goes from when he's generating from the feet
00:22up until his hips where he really gets that rotational power.
00:25But it all starts with his foot and that calf power. So if that's damaged or that's injured, it is
00:31going to be harder to get into his stance and begin that power swing.
00:34Do you treat your calf injuries with your NYU Langone patients the same as pro athletes?
00:40We do. So for any sort of muscle injury that's not a full tendon tear, there's always a pretty routine
00:46set of treatment options.
00:47So we'll start with some great physical therapy. We have some of the best at NYU that's going to focus
00:52on muscle stretching and getting the muscle fibers out to length,
00:56strengthening both that muscle and importantly, the surrounding muscles to allow it to recover.
01:01That's probably the most important and best bang for a patient's buck.
01:04But then there's ice anti-inflammatories to help bring some of the unnecessary and extra inflammation down to better augment
01:11the recovery.
01:12And then the biggest difference between a pro athlete and, you know, some of our everyday athletes is timeline.
01:18So everyone's wondering when Stanton's coming back. If I hurt my calf, no one would be doing an interview when
01:23Dan Kaplan's coming back to the OR.
01:25So, you know, it's a little easier for timelines for us normal people versus superstar athletes.
01:30And that makes some of the decision making a little bit more straightforward.
