26 February - National Weather Forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there. Having achieved highs close to 19 Celsius in some parts of the UK on Wednesday,
00:06we are now seeing a return of the rain. But it's not a permanent return of the rain. There
00:11are some reasonable signs for at least a few days of drier weather into next week. More
00:16on that in a moment. For the time being, we've got these weather fronts to deal with. And
00:20they are bringing increasingly heavy rain across parts of the Midlands, Wales and the
00:24southwest during the evening. That rain reaching East Anglia and the southeast overnight as
00:30well and sticking around throughout the night as you can see. Although it does break up,
00:34it becomes more fragmented by the end of the night. A lot of cloud across England and Wales.
00:39Clearer spells coming into Scotland and Northern Ireland where the earlier rain now replaced
00:43by showers. The most frequent of these showers moving into the north, central and western
00:48part of Scotland, north and west Northern Ireland. Clear spells in between but a gusty wind. That
00:54wind coming from a colder direction. So temperatures here around the mid single figures, perhaps
00:59a touch below in some sheltered spots and cold enough for some mountain snow out of these
01:04showers. Further south, it's a mild start to Friday, albeit a very dreary one with a lot
01:10of low cloud, thick low cloud. And these outbreaks of rain continuing in places more showery through
01:16the morning and then perhaps becoming more prolonged across parts of the Midlands, Wales, the southwest
01:21into the afternoon. Some heavy bursts as well. A little bit of uncertainty about the exact
01:26distribution of this rainfall on Friday afternoon and heading into the evening. But suffice to say
01:30there will be some rain sticking around in places. Further north, the far north of England, Scotland
01:35and Northern Ireland mostly turning drier by the end of the day. The showers becoming fewer and further
01:41between. Some decent sunshine emerging. It's going to feel fresher compared with recent days. Temperatures back in the
01:47mid to high single figures. But at least we've got those brighter skies as opposed to the south,
01:51where temperatures will reach 13 to 14 Celsius under grey leaden skies. And the rain perhaps
01:57turning even heavier into the evening. A soggy rush hour to come in places before it eventually
02:02starts to push south eastwards with the drier air to the north, toppling its way south and south east.
02:09We start Saturday then with a chill in the air across many northern and western parts of the country,
02:14even a touch of frost, particularly for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, where temperatures will be
02:19below freezing. And for areas across western England and Wales, where we see the earlier clearance of
02:24rain, there'll be some sunshine and a chill in the air first thing. But eastern England still with this
02:30cloud and rain, only slowly petering out. Showers starting to form then by the afternoon across northern
02:36England, particularly through the Pennines, eastern Scotland, the northeast of England, before the next system
02:41approaches Northern Ireland and the far west of Britain. In between some sunshine and a reasonable
02:47gap between systems, a cooler day for many, or at least I should say a colder day for many,
02:527 to 9 or 11 Celsius. Then into Sunday, we've got this showery rain moving across the UK, but higher
03:01pressure builds for Monday, Tuesday and the first part of Wednesday at least. So a couple of days of
03:08drier weather to look forward to after this soggy 24 hours in the south.
