Transcript
00:00What a difference 24 hours can make after the major winter ice storm moved through the Charlotte, North Carolina area.
00:07Folks are out and about today assessing the damage.
00:10Now here in the Charlotte area, there was about 35,000 people still without power in the state of North Carolina on Monday morning.
00:18Now that was mainly west of Charlotte in the foothills.
00:22Crews are continuing to work around the clock and they will continue to do so until all of the power is restored.
00:28Now there was about a half of an inch of sleet that officially fell in the Charlotte area on Sunday.
00:36Some of the areas in the suburbs of Charlotte reported up to three inches of sleet and that caused just very dangerous conditions.
00:44Sunday night from about 8 p.m. on, it was almost impossible to get around on the roads.
00:50As we continue to thaw out here, it's going to be a very cold week for North Carolinians, including the Charlotte area.
00:57So the downside to trying to get out and get back to normal is that even though it's beautiful weather right now,
01:03all of the slush and all of that sleet is going to continue to melt throughout the afternoon
01:09and then refreeze tonight as temperatures tumble back down into the single digits in some spots and even in the teens.
01:16So the next two days or so, very dangerous officials are warning about black ice and because of the very cold weather,
01:24there is still going to be warming centers open up around Prince of Charlotte.
01:28We open up what we call our overflow or inclement weather shelter, which is an expansion of what we're doing.
01:33And so we bring in cots and put into our dining room and convert it into a sleeping space.
01:38We have a small multipurpose room. We'll put cots in there.
01:41Now, officials say folks really need to be cautious over these next couple of days because of that black ice.
01:47That will be a major concern as these temperatures continue to fluctuate from below freezing to above freezing.
01:53They are expecting another round of very cold weather here in the Charlotte area this weekend,
01:58which could bring more snow and more wintry mix.
02:01Morning in Charlotte, North Carolina. I'm Leslie Hudson for AccuWeather.
