00:00A very high-impact winter storm is going to take over, impacting much of the South Central and Eastern U.S. beginning this Friday through the Southern Plains and through the weekend into the Northeast and the East Coast.
00:12Freezing rain will likely take power out for hundreds of thousands of people from Texas into Georgia, parts of the Carolinas as well during the height of the storm.
00:19Maybe even a million people at moments, and we'll see heavy snow from the Southern Plains into the Northeast.
00:25Record cold, daily record lows will be challenged on Sunday in parts of Texas and then into especially parts of the Carolinas for Monday and Tuesday.
00:35So those without power will be in a bad spot.
00:38Let's take a look at the Northeast here.
00:39Now, there are some areas of snow even before the big storm forms.
00:43We're dealing with some pretty pesky snow showers, even a few snow squalls early this Thursday associated with, and late this Wednesday, associated with an eastbound Arctic front.
00:53So this front is plowing east.
00:56We're dealing with some trouble out there Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.
01:00There will be some limited visibility, slick spots, and so forth.
01:04And, by the way, we're seeing a lot of lake ice.
01:07Most of Lake Erie is filled in, covered in ice, except for a little bit of the deep end in the east-central part of the lake.
01:12But the fringes are really rapidly expanding with more and more ice.
01:16Meanwhile, to the south, we look ahead to Friday evening, and this is when the rain in Dallas changes over to snow, or changes over to ice, I should say.
01:24Some rain to freezing rain, then sleet, and that storm will probably end as a little bit of snow in Dallas in the backside.
01:29But we'll be watching as this pulls north.
01:32If the northern branch of the jet stream and the southern branch of the jet stream phase early enough, if they align with one another early enough,
01:39that'll draw the storm farther north, kind of an inflection point in the storm track.
01:43So we're looking at significant snow out there, and a lot of ice in many areas here, with snow and or ice there in that purple zone.
01:50So widespread snow is likely.
01:52We're going to get more specific in due time, but here's the likelihood of three inches or more of snow.
01:57Many of you will see far more than that in the purple zone.
