Storm chaser Aaron Jayjack takes advantage of a lull in wintry weather in Charlotte, North Carolina, to break down the icy conditions and the danger to come as night approaches.
Transcript
00:00Good afternoon from Charlotte, North Carolina. We're still on a little bit of a lull here. The
00:06first round of winter weather has come through and dropped a lot of sleet. You can see covering
00:12the roadways here and the sidewalks. It's a hard sleet. It's frozen solid now. You can see that.
00:22Earlier it was like more of like a snow, but now it's frozen solid. Everything is frozen
00:29up, freezing up. So it does appear that we're getting a little colder here than we were earlier.
00:34You can see everything is covered in a layer of ice right now. You got this grass
00:39with a thin layer. What is that? It's not even an eighth of an inch probably.
00:45But we are just getting started. This is from round one, which was expected to be more of a sleet event
00:50with some mixed freezing rain. And round two is on its way right now, just off to our west.
00:56Big time rains coming and freezing temps here at the surface. So we are about to get rained on
01:02and then be below freezing here at the surface. And I expect that things are going to significantly
01:10deteriorate here this evening, late this afternoon, into the evening. In fact, I'm expecting that we'll
01:16likely see power outages with transformers exploding tonight as dark falls here, the ice builds up,
01:24and we start seeing those transformers begin to explode and the power grid go down. So that's kind
01:29of what I'm expecting to see here over the next couple of hours. Right now we are in this little
01:33bit of a lull. I've taken advantage of the downtime, had some food, taken a shower because we may lose
01:40power tonight and won't be able to take a shower for a while. So we're going to keep tracking the storm
01:44here. People are still trying to get around and it's actually, if you need any last minute things
01:49here in Charlotte, this would be a good time to get it. But be careful, take an all wheel drive or
01:54four wheel drive vehicle because it is still quite treacherous out there. As I mentioned, this was slushy
02:00and kind of like snow earlier and now it is freezing solid into a sheet of ice and we have much more
02:09ice coming off to our west.
