00:00Hey everyone, and welcome back.
00:02Today, we have an amazing story from the Bible about a great king named David.
00:07Now, King David was a hero, a brave warrior, and he loved God very much.
00:13But even the best of us can make mistakes, and this story is about a big one David made,
00:18and the incredible lesson he learned from it.
00:21One day, King David started to feel a little too proud of himself.
00:24He looked at his huge kingdom and his mighty army and thought, wow, look at how powerful I am.
00:32I should count all my soldiers to see just how strong my kingdom is.
00:35This might sound like a good idea, like counting your toys to see how many you have.
00:41But for a king who was supposed to trust in God for everything, this was a problem.
00:46Counting his soldiers was like David saying, I don't need God to protect me.
00:50My giant army can do it all by itself.
00:52It was a moment of pride, where he forgot that his real strength didn't come from the number of soldiers he had,
00:59but from God's love and protection.
01:02One of David's top generals, a wise man named Joab, even tried to warn him.
01:08Joab said, King David, why are you doing this?
01:11God has already blessed us so much.
01:14Let's not do something that will get us into trouble.
01:16But David was stubborn.
01:18His pride was too big, and he ordered Joab to go ahead and count the people anyway.
01:24So, Joab and his commanders traveled all across the land of Israel.
01:28It took them almost ten months to count everyone.
01:31When they came back, they told David the number.
01:34There were hundreds of thousands of strong, capable soldiers, a massive army.
01:39For a moment, David might have felt powerful, but that feeling didn't last long.
01:44As soon as the counting was done, David's heart sank.
01:48He suddenly realized he had done something very wrong.
01:52He felt a deep sense of guilt and knew he had sinned against God.
01:56He had put his trust in his own power instead of in God's.
01:59Immediately, David fell to his knees and prayed.
02:03He said, Oh God, I have sinned greatly.
02:06I have done a very foolish thing.
02:08Please, please forgive me.
02:10God heard David's prayer.
02:11God always hears us when we talk to him, but actions have consequences.
02:16And what David did was a very serious mistake.
02:19It wasn't just a battle.
02:21Him, as a king, his actions affected his entire kingdom.
02:25So, God sent a prophet named Gad to speak to David.
02:28Gad came to the king and said,
02:31David, because of what you have done, God is giving you a choice of three punishments.
02:36You must choose one.
02:37This was a scary moment for David.
02:39Gad laid out the choices.
02:42First, he said,
02:43You can have seven years of famine in your land,
02:46where no food will grow and everyone will be hungry.
02:49Second, you can have three months of running away from your enemies while they chase you.
02:54Or third, you can have a three-day plague in your kingdom,
02:58a terrible sickness that will spread through the land.
03:00Well, what a choice.
03:02None of these options were good.
03:04They were all terrible.
03:06David had to think fast.
03:07What would you choose?
03:08It was a really tough decision.
03:10David thought about it carefully.
03:12He didn't want his people to suffer because of his mistake.
03:16He especially didn't want to be at the mercy of his enemies.
03:19He knew that even when God is disciplining us,
03:22he is still loving and merciful.
03:25But human enemies might not be.
03:27So David made his choice.
03:29He told Gad,
03:30Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is great.
03:34But do not let me fall into the hands of man.
03:37David chose the three days of plague.
03:39He trusted that even in punishment,
03:41God would be more compassionate than any human enemy.
03:44He put his faith back where it belonged, in God.
03:47So, a terrible plague began to spread throughout the land of Israel.
03:51It was a very sad and scary time.
03:54Many people got sick.
03:56And the Bible tells us that 70,000 people lost their lives.
04:00David saw the angel of the Lord over the city of Jerusalem,
04:04ready to bring the plague there too.
04:06His heart was broken.
04:07He and the elders of Israel, all dressed in sackcloth,
04:11which was a way of showing they were deeply sorry,
04:14fell on their faces before God.
04:16David cried out to God,
04:18Was it not I who commanded the people to be numbered?
04:21I am the one who has sinned and done wrong.
04:24These people are like innocent sheep.
04:26What have they done?
04:27Please!
04:27Lord my God, let your hand be against me and my family.
04:31But please, spare your people.
04:33David was taking responsibility.
04:36He knew this was his fault.
04:37And he was begging God to stop the suffering of his people
04:41and put the punishment on him instead.
04:43That's what a true leader does.
04:45They don't blame others.
04:47They take responsibility for their mistakes.
04:49God, in his great mercy, heard David's heartfelt prayer.
04:53He saw how truly sorry David was.
04:56The prophet Gad came to David again with a message from God.
04:59He told David to go to a place called the threshing floor of Aaron of the Jebusite
05:04and build an altar to the Lord there.
05:07A threshing floor was a place where farmers separated grain from the stock.
05:11And an altar was a special place to worship God and make offerings.
05:15David immediately obeyed.
05:17He went to find Araunah.
05:19When Araunah saw the king coming, he bowed down respectfully.
05:23David told him,
05:24I want to buy your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord and stop the plague.
05:29Araunah was a very generous man.
05:31He said,
05:32My king, take it for free.
05:34And here are my awesome for the sacrifice and the wooden threshing tools for the fire.
05:38Take whatever you need.
05:40But David said something very important.
05:43He replied,
05:44No, I insist on paying you the full price.
05:47I will not offer to the Lord my God a sacrifice that cost me nothing.
05:51David understood that being truly sorry means you're willing to make a sacrifice.
05:56It has to cost you something.
05:57A real apology isn't just words.
06:00It's showing you mean it.
06:01So, David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for a fair price.
06:06He built an altar there.
06:07Right on that spot, he placed the offerings on the altar and prayed to the Lord,
06:12asking for forgiveness for himself and for his people.
06:16And as soon as he did this, God answered his prayer.
06:19The plague stopped.
06:20The angel of the Lord sheathed his sword.
06:23And the people of Israel were saved.
06:25And here's a super cool fact.
06:27The very spot where David built that altar, the threshing floor of Araunah,
06:31would later become the location for the great temple in Jerusalem.
06:35The most important place of worship for God's people for hundreds of years.
06:40It became a place that reminded everyone of God's forgiveness and mercy.
06:45So, what can we learn from this incredible story of King David?
06:50First, we learn about the danger of pride.
06:52When we start thinking we're the best and don't need anyone's help, not even God's,
06:57we can get into big trouble.
06:59It's always better to be humble and remember that all our gifts and strengths come from God.
07:05Second, we see that our actions have consequences.
07:08Sometimes our mistakes can affect not just us, but the people around us too.
07:13That's why it's so important to think before we act and try to make good choices.
07:18But the most beautiful part of the story is about repentance and forgiveness.
07:23David made a huge mistake, but as soon as he realized it, he said he was sorry.
07:28He didn't make excuses.
07:30He took responsibility and was willing to do whatever it took to make things right.
07:35And because he was truly sorry, God forgave him.
07:38God is always ready to forgive us when we turn back to him with a humble heart.
07:43His mercy is bigger than any mistake we could ever make.
07:46This story shows us that even great heroes mess up,
07:50but what makes them truly great is their willingness to admit their mistakes and ask for forgiveness.
07:56It's a powerful reminder to trust in God, not in our own strength, and to always stay humble.
08:02Thanks for listening.
08:03Everyone, I hope you enjoyed this story and learned something new.
