00:00Hey everyone, and welcome back. Today, we're going to travel way back in time to meet some of the most awesome superheroes you've probably never heard of.
00:09Forget capes and laser eyes for a minute. These guys were real-life heroes, and their story is found in the Bible in a book called The Samuel.
00:18We're talking about King David's mighty men. So, who was King David?
00:22He was a shepherd boy who became one of the greatest kings of Israel. But a king is only as strong as his team, right?
00:29And David had the ultimate team. These weren't just soldiers. They were his best friends, his most loyal protectors.
00:36And they were incredibly brave. The Bible tells us about them to show us what real courage and friendship looked like.
00:43Let's start with the team, the super-duper elite group known as the Three.
00:47These were the top three warriors and David's whole army. Imagine the best of the best of the best.
00:53Their leader was a guy named Joshua Basshabit. What a name, right?
00:57Well, his actions were even more incredible than his name.
01:01The Bible says that in one single battle, he defeated 800 enemies all by himself.
01:06Can you even imagine that? It's like a whole movie scene in one person.
01:11He was so skilled and so strong. It was like he had superhuman strength.
01:15All because he trusted God to help him.
01:18Next up in the three was a man named Eliezer.
01:21Eliezer's story is one of my favorites because it shows us what it means to never give up.
01:27One day, the Israelite army was facing their rivals, the Philistines.
01:31Things weren't looking good, and many of the Israelite soldiers got scared and ran away.
01:37But not Eliezer. He stood his ground.
01:39He fought and fought and fought until he was so tired, his hand literally got stuck to his sword.
01:45It was like his hand and the sword became one.
01:48He refused to let go and refused to quit until the battle was won.
01:53That's what we call perseverance.
01:55God gave him the strength to keep going when everyone else had given up.
01:59The third member of this epic trio was a man named Shammah.
02:03Shammah's story is all about defending what's important.
02:06The Philistines came to attack a field of lentils.
02:09Now, you might be thinking, lentils, like the little beans for soup, why is that a big deal?
02:15Well, in those days, food was everything.
02:19That lentil field was a grocery store for a whole village.
02:22Losing it meant people would go hungry.
02:25So, while other soldiers ran, Shammah stood right in the middle of that field and defended it all by himself.
02:31He fought off the entire enemy army and saved the food for his people.
02:35It was a huge victory that God helped him achieve.
02:39He showed that sometimes.
02:41Being a hero means protecting the simple but important things.
02:45These three men, Joshua Bashebeth, Eliezer, and Shammah, were at the top,
02:50but there were many other mighty men who were just as amazing.
02:54Their stories show us that true strength comes from courage, loyalty, and faith in God.
02:59One story that really shows their loyalty happened when David was hiding in a cave.
03:04He was so thirsty, and he just happened to say out loud,
03:08Oh, I wish I could have a drink of water from the well in Bethlehem.
03:12Now, Bethlehem was his hometown, but at the time, it was captured by the enemy.
03:18To get to that well, you'd have to sneak right through the enemy camp.
03:22It was a super dangerous mission.
03:24But guess what?
03:25Three of his other mighty men heard him.
03:27They didn't even hesitate.
03:28They looked at each other, nodded, and set off.
03:32They broke through the enemy lines, got the water from the well, and brought it all the
03:36way back to David.
03:38When they presented the water to David, he was totally stunned.
03:41He realized they had risked their lives just for a simple wish.
03:45He was so moved that he couldn't even drink it.
03:48He poured it on the ground as an offering to God, saying,
03:52This water is as precious as the blood of the men who risked their lives to get it.
03:56This story isn't about fighting.
03:59It's about love and loyalty.
04:01These men loved their king so much that his needs were more important than their own safety.
04:05That's a powerful kind of friendship.
04:08Another one of David's mighty men was Benaiah.
04:10This guy was the definition of fearless.
04:13His resume of brave deeds is just mind-blowing.
04:15The Bible tells us he took on two of the best warriors from a neighboring land called Moab.
04:21And one.
04:22He also fought an Egyptian giant who was carrying a huge spear.
04:26Benaiah only had his staff, but he used his smarts and bravery to defeat the giant.
04:32But his most famous story?
04:34It happened on a snowy day.
04:35A lion had fallen into a pit.
04:37Now, most people would run away from a lion, right?
04:41Not Benaiah.
04:42He climbed down into the pit with the lion and fought it.
04:45In a snowy pit.
04:47He was brave, strong, and totally fearless because he knew God was with him.
04:52Benaiah's courage earned him a spot as the leader of David's personal bodyguards.
04:57You definitely want a guy like that protecting you.
04:59Then there was Uriah the Hentite.
05:01Uriah's story is a bit different and also a little sad, but it teaches us about honor and integrity.
05:08Uriah was another one of David's loyal soldiers fighting on the front lines.
05:12He was so dedicated that when he was called back home for a break, he refused to go into his comfortable house.
05:19He said,
05:20How can I rest at home when my friends and the Ark of God are on a tent on the battlefield?
05:25He chose to sleep outside with the other soldiers because his duty and honor were more important to him than his own comfort.
05:32Uriah's story is a powerful reminder to always do the right thing, even when no one is watching.
05:39So why are these stories in the Bible?
05:41Are they just cool action stories?
05:43Well, yes, they are cool, but there's so much more.
05:46They show us what a team looks like when it's united under a great leader who loves God.
05:51David wasn't just a king.
05:53He was a leader who inspired incredible loyalty and bravery in his men.
05:57He trusted God, and his men saw that and were inspired to do the same.
06:03Their unity was their greatest weapon.
06:05They weren't just a bunch of individual heroes running around.
06:08They worked together, supported each other, and were all focused on the same goal, protecting their king and their kingdom.
06:16When Elzer was fighting alone, the victory was for all of Israel.
06:20When Shammah defended the lentil field, he was saving the community.
06:23Their individual acts of bravery contributed to the success of the whole team, and their legacy lives on.
06:30These stories aren't just ancient history.
06:32They are here to inspire us today.
06:34We might not be fighting giants or lions in snowy pits, but we all face our own battles.
06:40Maybe it's standing up for someone who's being bullied, or telling the truth when it's hard, or not giving up on a difficult school project.
06:49These are our lentil fields and our giants.
06:51The mighty men teach us that with courage, loyalty to our friends and family, and faith, we can be mighty too.
06:59Their strength didn't just come from their muscles.
07:01It came from their hearts and their trust in God.
07:05God gave them the power to do extraordinary things, and he can give us strength too.
07:10When we face challenges, we can remember Elzer, who didn't give up.
07:14We can remember Shammah, who stood up for what was important.
07:17And we can remember Benaiah, who faced his fears head on.
07:21So, the next time we think about heroes, remember King David's mighty men.
07:26They were real people who showed us that with God's help.
07:29Ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
07:32They teach us to be brave, to be loyal, and to always fight for what is right.
07:37Their stories remind us to value the people in our own lives, our own community of mighty men and women,
07:43and to always have each other's backs.
07:46Thanks so much for hanging out with me today to learn about these incredible heroes.
07:51I hope their stories inspire you to be brave and faithful in your own life.
