00:09It's about a king named David and a man named Shyamay.
00:12It's a story that teaches us about big feelings like anger,

00:23So, King David was going through a really tough time.
00:26Imagine having a really bad day, like the worst day ever.
00:30That's what was happening to him.
00:32His own son, Absalom, was trying to take over the kingdom,
00:36and David had to run away from his own palace in Jerusalem.
00:39He was sad, worried, and probably a little scared.
00:43As he was walking along a dusty road with his friends and soldiers,
00:47something surprising happened.
00:49A man named Shyamay came out from a nearby village.
00:52Now, Shyamay was not happy with King David.
00:55Not at all.
00:56He was from the family of the old king, Saul,
00:59and he felt that David had wronged his family.
01:01So, what did Shyamay do?
01:04He started shouting mean things at David.
01:06He called him names and said all sorts of hurtful stuff.
01:10And that's not all.
01:11He even started throwing rocks and dust at the king and his men.
01:16Can you believe it?
01:17Throwing rocks at a king.
01:18One of David's top soldiers, a tough guy named Abishai, got really angry.
01:23He turned to King David and said,
01:26Why should this man be allowed to curse you, my king?
01:29Let me go over and take care of him right now.
01:32Abishai wanted to protect his king and stop Shyamay's insults.
01:36It's what you might expect a loyal soldier to do, right?
01:39But David's reaction was totally unexpected.
01:42David told Abishai,
01:44Hold on.
01:45Let him be.
01:46Don't harm him.
01:47Everyone must have been so surprised.
01:49David explained that if his own son was causing him trouble,
01:53then it wasn't a big surprise that someone else was too.
01:56He then said something really wise.
01:58He said,
01:59Maybe the Lord told him to do this.
02:01And maybe,
02:02if I'm patient and humble,
02:04God will see the trouble I'm in
02:06and turn this curse into a blessing.
02:08Well,
02:09instead of getting angry and fighting back,
02:12David chose a different path.
02:14He chose humility.
02:15Humility is like knowing you're not perfect and being okay with it.
02:19David didn't let his pride get in the way.
02:22He saw this very difficult moment as a test of his character and his faith.
02:27He trusted that God was in control,
02:29even when things looked really, really bad.
02:32He believed that God could take something awful,
02:35like being cursed and having rocks thrown at you,
02:38and turn it into something good.
02:40That's a powerful way to look at things, isn't it?
02:43So, David and his men just kept walking,
02:46with Shimei following along,
02:48still shouting,
02:49and throwing dust.
02:50Now,
02:50let's fast forward a bit.
02:52The story takes a happy turn for David.
02:54He eventually defeated Absalom's army
02:57and was able to return to Jerusalem as the rightful king.
03:01It was a huge celebration.
03:03As David and his followers were crossing the Jordan River to go back home,
03:08guess who showed up?
03:09It was Shimei.
03:10But this time, Shimei wasn't shouting or throwing rocks.
03:14He was a completely different person.
03:16He rushed ahead of everyone
03:18and fell down on the ground right in front of King David.
03:21He was so sorry for what he had done.
03:24He begged the king for forgiveness.
03:26He said,
03:27Please, my king, don't hold what I did against me.
03:30Don't remember the terrible way I acted on the day you left Jerusalem.
03:34I know I did a very wrong thing.
03:36Shimei's actions show us something really important about being human.
03:40We all make mistakes.
03:42Sometimes we let our anger get the best of us,
03:45and we say or do things we later regret.
03:48Shimei felt terrible about his behavior.
03:50He was showing true repentance,
03:52which means he was genuinely sorry and wanted to make things right.
03:57He was taking responsibility for his actions.
04:00Once again, David's tough soldier, Abishai, spoke up.
04:04He said,
04:05Shouldn't this man be punished for cursing the king?
04:07From Abishai's point of view,
04:09justice needed to be served.
04:11Shimei had committed a serious offense,
04:14and there should be a consequence.
04:15It makes sense, right?
04:17If someone does something wrong,
04:19they should face the consequences.
04:21But again,
04:22King David surprised everyone.
04:24He turned to Abishai and said,
04:26This is a day of celebration.
04:28I have been restored as king over all of Israel.
04:31Should anyone be punished on a day like today?
04:34Then,
04:34David looked directly at the scared and sorry Shimei,
04:38who was still on the ground.
04:39And David said to him,
04:41You will not die.
04:42The king made a promise to him,
04:44right then and there,
04:46that he would spare his life.
04:47This is such a powerful moment.
04:49David chose mercy over revenge.
04:51He could have easily punished Shimei.
04:54He had all the power.
04:55But he didn't.
04:56He chose to forgive.
04:58Forgiveness is like a superpower

07:53he gave some final instructions to his son, Solomon,
07:56who would be the next king.
07:58He reminded Solomon about Shimei.

08:05to hold Shimei accountable for his actions in the past.
08:09Eventually, Solomon did set some rules for Shimei to follow,
08:14and when Shimei broke those rules,
08:16he faced the consequences.
