US President Donald Trump reiterated his claims of Russia and China 'taking' Greenland if Washington doesn't, speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday.

"If we don't take Greenland, Russia or China will. And I'm not letting that happen," Trump told reporters.

"Do you know what their defence is? Two dog sledges. In the meantime, you have Russian destroyers and submarines and Chinese destroyers and submarines all over the place," he continued. Trump has also previously suggested Denmark's approach to security was 'sending another dog sled'.

While leaving rooms open for possible negotiations, Trump emphasised that Washington will control the territory 'one way or another'. He also dismissed concerns over possible fracture within NATO, as Greenland remains a semi-autonomous territory of fellow NATO member Denmark.

"If we needed NATO, would they be there for us? I'm not sure they would [...] It affects NATO. But, you know, they need us much more than we need them," Trump remarked.

The White House has said the administration is considering buying Greenland, even by force, while Denmark has repeatedly opposed the idea, warning that any military action would spell the end of the transatlantic defence agreements in which the US is permitted to deploy troops to the territory if it chooses.

This is not the first time Trump has made an offer to buy Greenland. During his first term, Trump made an offer to Denmark to purchase the island but was told it was not for sale.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is to hold talks with Denmark on Wednesday, according to media reports.

The renewed interest in the Arctic island also comes amid increased interest in Greenland's natural resources, including rare earth minerals, which are becoming easier to access as its ice melts due to climate change.

00:00One group taking your threats very seriously is Greenland.
00:04Are you still thinking of military action there, or is there anything that can...
00:07What, where military action?
00:08Greenland.
00:09Greenland.
00:10Is there anything they can offer you for a deal?
00:12If we don't take Greenland, Russia or China will.
00:15And I'm not letting that happen.
00:17If we don't take Greenland, Russia or China will take Greenland.
00:21And I am not going to let that happen.
00:23Is there any deal they can offer you?
00:25Yeah, sure, I'd love to make a deal with them.
00:28It's easier.
00:29But one way or the other, we're going to have Greenland.
00:32Are you okay if that compromises NATO?
00:35If NATO effectively ceases to...
00:38I'm doing a great job.
00:39I'm the one that saved NATO.
00:40I'm the one that got them to pay five points, five percent of GDP.
00:45Wait a minute.
00:46It was two, two percent, and they didn't pay.
00:48Now they're paying five percent.
00:50I'm the one that saved NATO.
00:51You wouldn't have NATO if I weren't president.
00:54Would you pull the U.S. out of NATO?
00:56Would you consider doing that?
00:57Well, maybe NATO would be upset if I did it.
01:00Maybe NATO would save a lot of money.
01:02But I like NATO.
01:04I just wonder whether or not, if we needed NATO, would they be there for us?
01:08I'm not sure they would.
01:09You know, we spent a lot of money on NATO.
01:11And I'm not sure they would.
01:13Have you made a tangible offer to Greenland yet?
01:16Have you made an actual offer to Denmark?
01:18I haven't done that.
01:19But Greenland should make the deal, because Greenland does not want to see Russia or China take over.
01:24They don't go there.
01:25It's very far away from Greenland.
01:27And Greenland, basically, their defense is two dog sleds.
01:31Do you know them?
01:32Do you know what their defense is?
01:33Two dog sleds.
01:35In the meantime, you have Russian destroyers and submarines and China destroyers and submarines all over the place.
01:43We're not going to let that happen.
01:45And it affects NATO, and then it affects NATO.
01:48But, you know, they need us much more than we need them.
01:51I will tell you that right now.
01:52The U.K. and Germany are discussing plans for a joint NATO mission to protect Arctic security in Greenland.
02:00Does that change your calculus at all in terms of acquiring?
02:03No, look, look.
02:04We're talking about acquiring, not leasing, not having it short-term.
02:08We're talking about acquiring.
02:09Does that require the U.S. to have some real?
02:11And if we don't do it, Russia or China will.
02:14And that's not going to happen when I'm president.
02:16Are you going to increase the amount of military bases on Greenland in the meantime?
02:19We have bases on Greenland, yeah.
02:21Are you going to do more?
02:22We're going to put a lot of soldiers there right now, if I want.
02:25But you need more than that.
02:27You need ownership.
02:28You really need title, as they say in the real estate business.
