00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Heaston-Betz and today I'm out on the streets of Manchester
00:04asking people about phones and children in particular. Basically, we want to know what age people think kids should have their first phones.
00:11Should they be starting off with something a bit more akin to a flip phone?
00:14Should they be allowed a touch screen straight away? And what do people think we can do to keep kids safe online?
00:19There's a need for phones, for children not too young, I would say 12 plus, high school, old brick only,
00:27no internet access at all, able to text and phone only, with locks on that parents set, controlled.
00:35And then when you're 18, you get a lovely smartphone if you want one and you're an adult.
00:39I think it's situational. I mean, me personally, I wouldn't want to give a phone to a kid under say 10 or something,
00:46maybe even 11. And generally, if I did, then it would be sort of just to keep in contact with parents
00:51that they were going out with friends. I really wouldn't want them having sort of, you know,
00:55at the top of the end smartphone and access to all these apps and sites.
