00:00I is for the Leeds Irish Centre which has been at the heart of the local
00:10community since 1970. This was the very first Irish built centre, purposely built,
00:17the first and it's still going today when others in big cities, bigger cities
00:24than Leeds, have not been able to keep their Irish centres going and we are
00:28very, very lucky. I came in here in 75 and we had this all-day licence and I just
00:37said we must get rid of this. This was something that I had since 1880 in the
00:42old club down Brickett and fortunately it was two-thirds of our business but
00:46myself and Chris, we stood shoulder to shoulder and we got through the whole
00:51lot but the next thing I said is we've got to get involved in the city. So in
00:571978 we got involved with the Lord Mays Parade. Now over the years you've had
01:03some artists, bands, who've gone on to global superstardom. The one that comes to
01:10mind at the moment is because of all the publicity they're getting is always just
01:15like you know and they came here in 1994. One of them came up to me, I think it was
01:19Liam actually, and he said to me, he said, can I use your phone? And I thought, hello,
01:24hello, where are you going to ring? So he said, you're all right, I'm only a ring in
01:27Manchester. I said, that's fine, go ahead and ring and of course he was
01:31ringing his mother Peggy, which we know Peggy of course from Charlestown in Mayo.
01:35That's where my people are from. The charity that's done from here is
01:39unbelievable. Whatever we did here, we did with a standard. We did it with,
01:43you know, a heart and a heart, as they used to say, you know. I remember years ago, there used to be buses going up and used to have at the side
01:50Leeds, Leeds. Leeds, L-E-A-D-S, Leeds. Yeah. Leeds, Leeds and still, as I said, that should be up and around because Leeds does lead.
02:02There aren't many I's and J's of Leeds, so let's crack on with the letter K. K is for
02:08Kirkgate, widely recognised as the oldest street in Leeds and of course,
02:13Kirkgate Market. Kirkgate's history stretches back over a thousand years to the medieval settlement
02:20that formed the basis of the modern city. Keeping with K and the old theme,
02:25one of, if not the oldest buildings in Leeds, is Kirkstall Abbey.
02:29L is for Lotherton, a country estate which is home to a hefty amount of history and an abundance of animals.
02:35Take a look at the other K's and L's of Leeds, including Killingbeck,
