The federal government will speed up plans to overhaul outdated environment laws, pledging to introduce reforms before Christmas. The update will be broader than previous attempts at reform and include national environmental standards and remove duplications in the approvals process.

00:00There was a well-documented and very detailed review of these environmental reforms or the
00:09Environmental Act.
00:11This particular one has a rather long title, by the way, of the Environment Protection
00:18Biodiversity Conservation Act.
00:21So these proposed reforms have been in the works for some five years now, but there's
00:25been a lack of progress in terms of securing support to get them through.
00:30The government says that they'll now introduce this overhaul of that Act six months earlier
00:38than initially planned, saying that there was an increase in consensus for support that
00:43there was a need to modernise the Act that came out of last week's productivity roundtable
00:49here in Canberra.
00:50Environment Minister Murray-Watt says that this package of reforms will now be much broader.
00:56Here's what he had to say.
00:57What we know is that we simply will not achieve our national priorities like building more
01:02homes, delivering more renewable energy and, of course, protecting the environment unless
01:07if we see significant reform.
01:09And by way of what this change will mean or entail, the government says that it will include
01:15a list of national environmental standards and will also work to reduce duplication between
01:23the Environment Act and other climate-related acts, with the overall aim of speeding up housing
01:30approvals without being detrimental to the environment.
