Father and son duo restore and re-enact race cars that go back before WW2

A father and son with a mutual love of vintage cars have spent the past three years restoring a race car to compete in a unique outback event. Their 1928 model-a ford will be among more than 130 machines re-enacting races held prior to World War two.

00:08Ray and Ray. Big Ray, used to be little Ray, now it's old Ray and young Ray.

00:15A panel beater before joining the Army, the Vietnam veteran passed his love of cars onto his son.

00:22Everything that's on the vehicle that we've sourced and done for it is to replicate a 9N28 Ford Speedster.

00:29This was totally rusted, buggery.

00:31Nearly three years, so from the time he said I found a car and he showed me a photo of a chassis in a backyard.

00:39Yeah, it's been a labour of love I suppose you call it.

00:43A former sergeant in the Special Air Service, he's more at home on a motorbike.

00:49For his 80th birthday we went around Australia on two motorbikes and that was inexperience but nothing deters him.

00:56He wants to go and do something, he'll go and do it.

00:58We'll go fast but we won't go crazy fast. I leave that for my motorbikes.

01:03Months of anticipation led up to their first test drive.

01:08They're on track for the Red Dust revival near Kalgoorlie in September.

01:12About 130 vintage cars have registered for the event, which re-enacts races held at Lake Percolilly before WWII.

01:21And they're certain to stand out.

01:24Everything about it is 1928, except the paint colour.

01:28That's 1931 commercial Ford.

01:31So they used to have it on all the old pickups.

01:33Resurrecting a piece of motoring history.

01:36These wrecks in the backyards are now being brought back to life.

01:41And that's what it's all about.

01:43While proving age is just a number.
