Tasmania delivers the biggest swings to Labor in the nation – leaving the Liberals with no seats. ‘Remarkable’ and ‘extraordinary’ were some words used to describe what was happening in Tasmania on election night.
00:00Wild scenes across the state as Labor turn Tasmania red.
00:09Today, Rebecca White was still coming to grips with her new job and the two new Labor MPs
00:16who will join her.
00:17It's incredibly exciting to be standing here as a candidate who is going to head into Canberra.
00:24I'm not sure what to call myself.
00:25The Liberals left picking up the pieces.
00:28It's a time to feel how we're feeling.
00:32I feel pretty sad about what's happened.
00:36Tasmanians rushed to support Labor.
00:38The party's primary vote soaring to 36.8%, 9.5% more than in 2022.
00:45While the Liberals' primary cratered to just over 24%, a drop of almost 9%.
00:51What we heard from Tasmanians last night is that they want us to strengthen Medicare and protect Medicare.
00:57They want more urgent care clinics here in Tasmania.
01:01The Liberals didn't front the cameras today as they worked through why their party was so on the nose in Tasmania.
01:07The returned government says there's no shortage of reasons.
01:11The second thing I felt very strongly was a strong dislike of Peter Dutton and his policies.
01:17He wasn't seen to have a plan for Tasmania.
01:19Others claimed state issues also spilled over.
01:23And then of course we've got this stadium at $1.2 billion, you know, and that's on a good day.
01:28One of the big issues that came up, people come up to me on the street, was around the spirits of Tasmania debacle.
01:32A debate over salmon farming was a large feature of the campaign.
01:36But it's unclear how big a factor it played at the ballot box.
01:39Apart from in Franklin where industry critic Peter George gave Julie Collins a scare, polling 22% of the vote and eating into a healthy 14% margin.
01:50The point is, when an electorate sends a message as clear as this, the old parties have to listen.
01:58But the Federal Minister is said to ultimately see off the challenge and increase her primary vote in the process.
02:05All the evidence suggests that the vast majority of Tasmanians went for candidates who were very supportive of the industry.
02:10The wait is now on to see if the Prime Minister rewards his Tasmanian MPs for the massive result
02:16and gives the smallest state a bigger say in his new cabinet.
02:20There is now a huge amount of talent for the Prime Minister to pick from, but I'm sure he's got talent all over the country.
