Tasmanian Governor reappoints Jeremy Rockliff as Premier

Tasmania's Governor has reappointed Liberal leader Jeremy Rockliff as Premier during a meeting at Government House this morning. Neither the Liberals nor Labor won enough seats to form a majority government in the July 19 state election.

00:00Premier Jeremy Rockcliffe visited the Governor, Barbara Baker, this morning.

00:06He spoke to her for about 45 minutes and he didn't speak to reporters when he first emerged

00:11from Government House, but the Governor, Barbara Baker, put out a statement soon after saying

00:17that she had reappointed Jeremy Rockcliffe as the Premier of Tasmania and she would

00:21swear in his new cabinet next week.

00:24Now we were expecting Parliament not to resume until sometime in September.

00:28That's now been brought forward to the 19th of August.

00:31So Labor has said that it might bring on a motion of no confidence in the Premier, Jeremy

00:36Rockcliffe.

00:37It's been stepping up its negotiations with the members of the crossbench to see if they

00:42will support that motion of no confidence in Jeremy Rockcliffe.

00:45So even though Jeremy Rockcliffe has been reappointed as Premier, we may not still have a longer

00:51term outcome on who will be governing the state.

00:54Jeremy Rockcliffe has said that it's up to someone else to bring on that motion of no

00:58confidence in him.

00:59Here's what he had to say.

01:01It's up to another member of Parliament to put forward a motion of that nature and that

01:09would be no doubt work through on the floor of the House.

01:13But it's not needed for us as a government to put forward such a motion of confidence.

01:21So Jeremy Rockcliffe will be back in Parliament on August 19th as the Premier.

01:25But whether that stays in place for the next four years with him leading a minority government

01:29with support from the crossbench is still up in the air.

01:33We could get this motion of no confidence from the Labor Party.

01:36And if that's successful, then Labor would test whether it has confidence on the floor of

01:40the lower house.
