Tomb Raider is a 3D action-adventure game starring archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft. Hired by businesswoman Jacqueline Natla to recover a mysterious artifact known as the Scion, Lara travels through ancient ruins and tombs in Peru, Greece, Egypt, and the lost city of Atlantis. The game places a strong emphasis on exploration, platforming, and puzzle-solving, with Lara able to run, jump, climb, swim, and navigate large, interconnected environments filled with traps, secrets, enemies, and hidden items. Combat features a variety of weapons, including Lara's signature dual pistols, while progress in the PlayStation version can be saved using Save Crystals found throughout the levels.

Tomb Raider received widespread critical acclaim for its innovative 3D graphics, controls, level design, and gameplay. It won several industry awards, became one of the best-selling games on the PlayStation, and helped establish Lara Croft as one of the most recognizable characters in video game history.
