00:01:33the New York Post sports way.
00:01:35And I will be giving a prediction for the Jets season.
00:01:39I've been taking some heat the last couple days about me saying, would you rather go 1-16,
00:01:446-11, whatever, I'm going to have my prediction that night.
00:01:49I'm going to give my prediction.
00:01:50And I'm going to ask David Bailey what he thinks about my prediction.
00:01:53All right.
00:01:54And I'm going to say it to his face.
00:01:55This is where I think you guys are going to go.
00:01:56What do you think?
00:01:57All right.
00:01:57Just letting you know.
00:01:58Well, come for the full bar and kitchen and, of course, the joint podcast.
00:02:04Stay to see what David Bailey says to Frankie's face.
00:02:07Again, we're going to kick things off.
00:02:09You might york me off.
00:02:11You might throw me out of the place.
00:02:12I don't know.
00:02:14Let him save that energy for that first game of the season.
00:02:17True, true.
00:02:18It all goes down Thursday, September 10th, of course, at the Ainsworth Midtown.
00:02:37The 2026 season for the New York Jets is just over a week away.
00:02:41Welcome to Gangs All Here.
00:02:43I'm Ryan Sampson with our Jets beat writer, Brian Costello, and my guy, Frankie Viteriti
00:02:47from U-Stadium.
00:02:48This is our Jets season preview episode.
00:02:51We're going to dive through it all, the roster, the questions about Aaron Glenn and his job
00:02:55security, where this team is going to go this year.
00:02:58We're going to try and do our best to do some projections here on some of these players.
00:03:02We got it all on today's episode.
00:03:04But before we get to any of that, as always on this show, I'll start with Kaz.
00:03:08Kaz, how's it going?
00:03:10You are a little bit over a week away from covering another season, the Jets, for the
00:03:15New York Post.
00:03:16How's it been, Kaz?
00:03:19Good.
00:03:19I can't wait for September 13th to get here, Ryan.
00:03:22I'm kind of tired of everything we've been talking about.
00:03:25In some cases, we've been talking about it for eight months.
00:03:28In some cases, it's been the last six weeks of training camp.
00:03:32I'm ready to see them actually play a football game and have something a little more tangible
00:03:38to talk about than, you know, Cade Klubnick and the kicking situation and all that stuff
00:03:45right now.
00:03:46I just kind of want to see some football.
00:03:49Amen, Kaz.
00:03:50I feel the same way.
00:03:52This team has gone through some serious changes, both on the staff side for the coaching and
00:03:57for the roster.
00:03:58And now we get to see that come to fruition and we'll see what the product is and we get
00:04:02to evaluate it from there.
00:04:04Frankie, you know, you've had quite the week already this week, buddy, on social media with
00:04:08some of your takes.
00:04:09We'll get into that later.
00:04:11I got some grays over here.
00:04:12Yeah, coming in.
00:04:13We'll get into that later in the episode, but how's it going, buddy?
00:04:16You ready for another Jets season?
00:04:18Yeah, man, I'm ready.
00:04:19I'm ready to just get this season sort of rocking and rolling.
00:04:22I want to see how this team looks.
00:04:23I think we're speculating a bunch of different things.
00:04:26We're thinking about, I'm thinking about Frank Reich in this offense.
00:04:30What's Aaron Glenn going to do with the defense?
00:04:31How are these rookies going to look if they're even playing week one?
00:04:35So I'm excited, man.
00:04:37It's a new chapter, I think.
00:04:38I think we can confidently say this season sort of opens up a new chapter for us.
00:04:43And it's going to be an important season for development for sure.
00:04:46So I'm excited.
00:04:47Yeah, for sure.
00:04:48And before we get in, Ryan, before we start, are we calling him Tanky V now?
00:04:52Is that his nickname on the show?
00:04:54That has been his nickname for years now, Kaz, on Jets social media.
00:04:58And now he's put it to fruition with Tanky V as a gang.
00:05:01Tanky V, all right, we got it.
00:05:02I got it.
00:05:03I just wanted to cut the speed on that.
00:05:04That is his gang's all here nickname now.
00:05:06He's got Damian Woody calling him out on Twitter.
00:05:09I will say I am looking forward to seeing Arch Manning play this year a little bit.
00:05:13I'll just throw that out there.
00:05:14We're going to have some special QB prospect episodes of gangs coming up this season.
00:05:20Trust me, we're going to dive into all of that.
00:05:21But I want to start before we get into the actual team itself or into the season itself.
00:05:27Kaz, the Jets announced their captains for this upcoming season.
00:05:32And there's been a little bit of like Jets fan reaction, which because we always have to react to something,
00:05:37even though there's nothing going on.
00:05:38For those of you who don't know yet and you're watching this episode, the Jets announced that Geno Smith, Joe
00:05:44Tippman, Harrison Phillips, Demario Davis, Minka Fitzpatrick, and special teamer Isaiah Williams will all be captains for the 2026 season.
00:05:52Kaz, Garrett Wilson was a captain last year, and now he is not named the captain for 2026.
00:05:59Is this a reason for concern, or is this just, you know, there's nothing else to talk about right now?
00:06:04I think it's a reason for concern.
00:06:05I think it's interesting.
00:06:07I think it's interesting that he and Brees aren't captains, right?
00:06:09Because I don't think there's any doubt they're the two best players on the team, right?
00:06:13I don't think anyone really debates that.
00:06:15So it's interesting that the two best players on the team aren't captains, and Garrett was last year.
00:06:19But football captains are kind of a funny thing.
00:06:22Like, it's not like hockey.
00:06:23Like, I feel like it's a sacred thing in hockey.
00:06:26Football, you know, you go out and you do the coin toss.
00:06:29But I saw the Rams have 11 captains.
00:06:31So it gets a little watered down.
00:06:33And I think if you look at this, Demario, Minka, and Geno, when they were signed or acquired by trade,
00:06:40the conversation was, well, they're here to be leaders, right?
00:06:43This is what they're doing.
00:06:44They're bringing in leaders.
00:06:45So those three kind of had to be captains.
00:06:47Harrison Phillips has been a leader since he got here last year.
00:06:50He couldn't have been a captain last year because he got here a week before the season.
00:06:53So I think he makes sense.
00:06:54Tippman, I think that's an interesting one to me.
00:06:57You know, he's definitely found his voice in the last year.
00:07:01He's become much more of a kind of a, for us in the media, we need team spokesman type of
00:07:05guys.
00:07:06And he's sort of become that.
00:07:07And usually those are the type of guys who are captains.
00:07:10So, you know, yeah, mildly surprised, no Garrett, no Brees, but I don't really think it's a issue at all,
00:07:17right?
00:07:19Kaz, just to provide some context on that, because what you just brought up with the Rams having 11 captains,
00:07:24so the Jets could have had seven or eight captains, correct?
00:07:27Yeah.
00:07:27There's not like a set number.
00:07:28Okay.
00:07:29Does that make it even a little more weird that they didn't just add Garrett to that?
00:07:34I mean, what's the, why do you think that is, if you had to say, I mean, I mean, it's
00:07:38really up to Aaron Glenn to set the number, right?
00:07:41Like, and they had six last year.
00:07:43So clearly that's his number.
00:07:44Right.
00:07:45And they did last year was last year was Justin Fields.
00:07:49It was Garrett.
00:07:50It was ABT.
00:07:51It was Quinnen.
00:07:53It was Jamie and Sherwood.
00:07:54And it was Marcelino McCrary ball for special teams.
00:07:56So they do three on one side of the ball, two on the other side, and then one special teamer.
00:08:00That's kind of the, that's clearly our lens formula.
00:08:03I do know a coach told me one year, a former Jets coach in the past, that someone didn't get
00:08:10voted a captain and he made him a captain because he was worried that the player would be upset that
00:08:15he wasn't named a captain.
00:08:16I vaguely remember, wasn't Sauce upset last year he wasn't a captain?
00:08:21Was that, am I remembering that right?
00:08:22I think it was, was it last year?
00:08:26Um, he did, I think it was something, right?
00:08:28With Sauce was kind of upset he wasn't a captain.
00:08:29So that's the, I guess, I guess that's the only thing you worry about is are these guys upset they're
00:08:34not captains?
00:08:34But I really don't think it's, it lingers or is a big deal.
00:08:38Yeah.
00:08:38Last year was Justin Fields, Garrett Wilson, Jamie and Sherwood, Quincy, uh, Quinnen Williams, Elijah Vera Tucker and Marcelino McCrary
00:08:46ball were all captains last year.
00:08:48Yeah.
00:08:49Um, so six last year, six this year.
00:08:52Yeah.
00:08:52It's the same, the same as last year.
00:08:53Yeah.
00:08:53So yeah.
00:08:54Yeah.
00:08:55I mean, uh, they, they, I don't know what their coin toss record was.
00:09:00So I guess that's how you measure captains.
00:09:04Probably right.
00:09:05What's the, uh, it's like kind of like, uh, MLB with your challenge of the ball strike.
00:09:09It's like, what's your, what's your call of heads, tails?
00:09:11What's your stats there?
00:09:13Um, all right, fellas, let's get into the, to get into the season.
00:09:16Uh, and, and by the way, with Garrett and Brees, just go out there and produce.
00:09:19Like we all know you're the best players in the field and for the jets, uh, and you got
00:09:24to produce like that.
00:09:25So cause, uh, three and 14 last year, terrible year, 32nd in point differential, 32nd in yardage
00:09:34differential, uh, and turnover differential.
00:09:37They completely reshaped this coaching staff with Glenn letting go of almost half of his
00:09:43coaches and rehiring a new staff.
00:09:46Uh, they brought in a ton of veterans that you had just mentioned there and they have
00:09:51tried to build this team and roster.
00:09:54It feels like more in the shape that Aaron Glenn would hope for, and he is going to be
00:09:59calling the defensive plays this year, which is a change from last year.
00:10:02So is this coach, Aaron Glenn starting with him?
00:10:07Is he fighting for his job this year to prove it to Woody Johnson and company that he deserves
00:10:13to be the head coach going forward?
00:10:16Yeah, I think he is, right?
00:10:17Like he's went three and 14 last year, so he can't have another terrible season and expect
00:10:24to be back in 2027.
00:10:25And we all know what's coming down the road in 2027, right?
00:10:29And the organization is going to have to ask a question.
00:10:32Do we want him to be the coach of this franchise quarterback that we believe we'll be drafting?
00:10:37Or do we want to bring somebody else in for that?
00:10:39And, uh, then we've seen a lot of teams draft the quarterback and fire the coach either
00:10:44during that first season with the quarterback or after that first season with the first
00:10:47round quarterback.
00:10:48So, you know, do the Jets want to go down that road?
00:10:51They're going to have to ask that question.
00:10:52So, yeah, I mean, look, I think it's gotten a little dramatic of like, well, he'd be fired
00:10:57after four games.
00:10:58Like I, I wrote this, I believe this, he should get the whole season.
00:11:02He should get the entire season.
00:11:04Yeah.
00:11:04There's no, there's no reason to fire coach mid season.
00:11:07And I don't think Woody Johnson will, I think he just went down that road with Salah, saw
00:11:11how that worked out.
00:11:12So I think Glenn is safe until the end of the season, but yeah, he's, he's coaching for
00:11:17his job, right?
00:11:18Yeah.
00:11:18And look, uh, I think a big aspect of that cause is going to be how he calls this defense
00:11:23and how good it performs or how well the defense performs and looks improved from last
00:11:27year.
00:11:28So talk about Aaron Glenn's style and what you expect to see from his defense and how
00:11:34he calls it.
00:11:35Yeah.
00:11:36I think he's going to be blitzing a lot.
00:11:37I think they're going to be playing, man.
00:11:39Uh, you know, the corners are going to play a man.
00:11:41I think you're going to notice right away how big they are.
00:11:45Uh, I think that was something right away.
00:11:47When you watch practice, you're like, wow, this, it's a different defense than what Robert
00:11:52Salah wanted.
00:11:52Robert Salah wanted smaller, quicker guys.
00:11:54Really will McDonald is the only piece of that left.
00:11:58Um, so, you know, to Andre sweat is a huge man.
00:12:03If he's out there or, you know, Harrison, Phil's a big guy.
00:12:06David Bailey is even a big, big guy.
00:12:08Uh, so I think that's going to strike you.
00:12:10And yeah, I think there's going to be a blitzing, you know, which I think fans like, I think
00:12:13that there'll be a, I think Minka Fitzpatrick is going to be this chess piece that he moves
00:12:19around.
00:12:19I think you could see him blitzing a lot.
00:12:22Um, you know, so I do expect him to be aggressive and, you know, right.
00:12:27He's kind of like a prosecutor right now.
00:12:29He's got to make his case this year for 2027.
00:12:32So yeah, the defense is a big piece of that.
00:12:34If he can sit down with Woody Johnson in December and say, look, you know, this is what I accomplished
00:12:40this year.
00:12:41The record has to be somewhat respectable, right?
00:12:45I think we've all talked about this.
00:12:46Like he can't go three and 14 again, but if he's six and 11 and he can point to three
00:12:51things that are trending upward and they feel good about, he has a case.
00:12:56Yeah.
00:12:56Look, I think it's a good point by you cause about the prosecutor and it's a good analogy
00:13:01for what he's trying to do.
00:13:03Uh, Frankie, how long is your leash for Aaron Glenn here?
00:13:07And what do you need to see from him this year to show actual improvement?
00:13:11Well, listen, I'll say this.
00:13:13If we end up, Oh, and four, we start on four, there is a playoff winning head coach sitting
00:13:19right next to him and Frank Reich.
00:13:20So you got to make the move when you have to know, I'm just kidding, but I'm joking.
00:13:26It's a joke.
00:13:27It's a joke.
00:13:27Um, no, I'm, I'm with cause on, on, on the whole, let him coach out the year.
00:13:33He came into a rebuilding team.
00:13:35They got rid of sauce and, and Quinn in, you got to give them at least this year.
00:13:40I, I don't even care if they're all in nine or Oh, and 10, just got to finish things out.
00:13:46Um, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's why you brought him in here, right?
00:13:50You brought him in here to rebuild the culture here.
00:13:52You don't rebuild a culture or a team in, in a year and a half.
00:13:57So you got to give them, I think at least the two years.
00:14:01And where I do disagree with cause is I think if they do go six and 11, not to get
00:14:05ahead
00:14:05of ourselves with the conversation, but I do think if they go six and 11, I don't think
00:14:10that's enough of the case.
00:14:11Now it matters how you win those games.
00:14:13If you win your last four games or something.
00:14:16Yes, maybe.
00:14:17But cause I don't think six and 11, to be honest, I don't know if that's good enough for me.
00:14:21I think I'm at like that eight and nine, seven and 10 kind of mark at least, but yeah, I
00:14:27would say it matters how you, I would say how it matters how you lose those games, Frankie
00:14:30more than you win.
00:14:31Yeah.
00:14:32Do they lose the last six games in a row?
00:14:34I'm with you then like then.
00:14:35Yeah.
00:14:36If they were six and five and then up six and 11, he's toast.
00:14:39If they're getting blown out in every week, like he's totally, but if they're losing,
00:14:45you know, one score games or in the fourth quarter and they're losing to like, you know,
00:14:49say the Broncos or, uh, you know, the bills or Patriots, like good teams.
00:14:54And they're, they're, they're in those games.
00:14:56They're not getting embarrassed.
00:14:57That looks different to it.
00:14:59So it's going to be how it looks at six and 11 or seven and 10.
00:15:03It's, it's, you know, I don't think there's a conversation if they're three and 14, I don't
00:15:07think there's a conversation if they're nine and eight, it's that middle area where you're
00:15:11kind of like, well, what did it look like?
00:15:14Yeah.
00:15:15Yeah.
00:15:15You look at Atlanta guys last year, you know, eight and nine, they ended up getting
00:15:19rid of the coach.
00:15:20Right.
00:15:20I mean, and that was, that's where the conversation I think gets a little bit murky or tough, but
00:15:24I think, yeah, that's, that's always, that's like my mark cause and rise, like that eight
00:15:29and nine, can they get to eight and nine?
00:15:31And then I think Glenn's surely safe, but it, it, it, it doesn't need to matter.
00:15:35It doesn't matter how it looks more than anything for sure.
00:15:38And, and, you know, I have to bring up also when cause it wrote about when Glenn deserves
00:15:43the entire season, Woody Johnson picked Aaron Glenn.
00:15:46This was a man that's been in the organization for a while now, started as a scout, obviously
00:15:51played with them too.
00:15:52And this is Woody's choice.
00:15:54And I think the amount of money he gave Aaron Glenn, the highest ever as a Jets head coach
00:16:00and the, the commitment he has to him cause feels like he wants to see him succeed no matter
00:16:06what.
00:16:07And, and try to support his vision and, and give him every opportunity this year to prove
00:16:12himself.
00:16:13I think one thing you had brought up about the, the wins have to, to be shown here too.
00:16:19The way they look is key.
00:16:21Like they got to play cleaner football overall as a, as a team.
00:16:25And that's something it felt like it was lacking so much last year.
00:16:28They were out of games immediately.
00:16:30You never thought the offense had a chance to keep them in a game.
00:16:33The defense couldn't stop a nosebleed and they never turned the ball over.
00:16:37So they never played any complimentary football cause.
00:16:39And I think that's something that's got to be key.
00:16:41No matter what this year is like, when you're watching a game, hopefully they're going into
00:16:45the fourth quarter, only down one score or up one score.
00:16:48And you're asking yourself, can they come back?
00:16:50Can they hold this lead?
00:16:52Do they have a chance?
00:16:53They actually have a shot to win.
00:16:54So I think that I think is going to matter the most.
00:16:57It can't be embarrassing, right?
00:16:58Like that's the low bar I've set for this.
00:17:00It's crazy.
00:17:01Like last year was embarrassing on so many levels, the zero interception, Garrett being the leading
00:17:06receiver, despite not playing, you know, 10 games, I think it was, uh, the way the last
00:17:12four or five weeks looked at the season where they just were non-competitive, um, Aaron Glenn's
00:17:19performance in London, right?
00:17:21These things were all embarrassing.
00:17:22They were just-
00:17:23Four turnovers all year, Kaz.
00:17:25Yeah.
00:17:25Four takeaways all year.
00:17:26It was just bad football.
00:17:28And so like, you can't, you can't have that at all this season.
00:17:31You can't be embarrassing.
00:17:32You can't be the homecoming opponent where, you know, everyone's excited to see the Jets
00:17:36coming in because they think that's a win.
00:17:38They've got to sort of get over that.
00:17:40That's the low bar for me is like, you got to, let's see them clear that.
00:17:44Then we can start talking about other stuff.
00:17:46But for me, that that's, that's the first, first thing that they have to do.
00:17:50Yeah.
00:17:50Look, I think Frankie in an ideal world, if Glenn can prove himself and they play cleaner
00:17:55football, they take that Detroit lions ascension in year two, like Dan Campbell took in year
00:18:02two with the lions where they're winning more football games.
00:18:04You know, they're not going to make the playoffs, but if they in that seven, eight win range,
00:18:09he deserves every chance to, to stay and build this, this thing out and rebuild it the way
00:18:14he wants backbone, the backbone, your success with your defense.
00:18:19I mean, that should be your backbone.
00:18:20Do what the Superbowl winning head coaches did Mike McDonald.
00:18:25I mean, just go and make that your MO get after the quarterback forced turnovers.
00:18:30I mean, if you can wreak havoc on all on defense, then your offense becomes something where
00:18:35you can have a complimentary offense, find the quarterback.
00:18:37And that makes sense.
00:18:38So if Glenn can build that defense to a point that people are scared, because people last
00:18:43year were scared to play the Seahawks at times, and they didn't even have such a star study
00:18:47defense, but they had no idea what was coming.
00:18:49Glenn has to do that this year.
00:18:51I completely agree.
00:18:52Uh, and look, we have a new quarterback this year in Geno Smith, old familiar face, but
00:18:57a new quarterback this year.
00:18:59Uh, it could not have gone worse with Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook in that
00:19:04quarterback room last year.
00:19:06And now he decided to go with a veteran that's has established himself that he can play, play
00:19:12compliment, you know, good football at, from the quarterback spot does turn the ball over
00:19:16a bunch, but cause the Jets drafted Geno in 20, 20, 2013.
00:19:20He's back 13 years later.
00:19:23Uh, talk to me about Geno.
00:19:25Are they getting a legitimate reclamation candidate this year at quarterback?
00:19:30Or is this merely renting the quarterback spot until we get to 2027?
00:19:36Yeah, I think it is renting, right?
00:19:37Like I know some people said, oh, Darnold or Baker, those guys were a lot younger.
00:19:41Uh, and you could see a long time having them as the quarterback Geno's 35.
00:19:48I don't see this being a long-term engagement here.
00:19:50I think this is just probably this year and maybe he sticks around when they draft a quarterback.
00:19:55I don't know if he'd want to do that, like to, to mentor him, but I don't see this being
00:19:58a long-term thing.
00:19:59I think it's a rental, um, you know, and he kind of already had his reclamation year
00:20:04with Seattle and, and did that.
00:20:06So this is almost, it's crazy how many chapters of Geno Smith's career there have been.
00:20:11So this is another chapter of it.
00:20:13And I think today before, it's going to be the Geno coaster.
00:20:16Like there's going to be games where you're like, wow, he threw three touchdowns.
00:20:20He threw for 330 yards.
00:20:22They look so good on offense.
00:20:24And there's gonna be other weeks where he throws three interceptions and they can't do
00:20:27anything.
00:20:28And you're frustrated with them.
00:20:29I just think that's the way the season's going to go.
00:20:32Well, I think we saw that in camp, right?
00:20:33Like you saw the highs and lows of Geno Smith.
00:20:36Like he, there were camp practices reports from you guys saying he was surgical today.
00:20:40He was, he completed almost every pass.
00:20:42He looked like he looked accurate.
00:20:44He looked decisive, but then there's practices like the Jets can't move the football right
00:20:47now, especially in two minutes real right now.
00:20:49But I also have to go back to, this is a new offense for him and Frank Reich.
00:20:53He's learning this offense, Reich and Glenn picked Geno to be their quarterback.
00:20:58How much should we trust that connection that those two have considering the one preseason
00:21:04action?
00:21:04We did see Geno win.
00:21:05He was seven for seven and let a touchdown drive against the Steelers.
00:21:10I think he fits Frank Reich's offense.
00:21:12I think he fits what Frank Reich likes.
00:21:13Coaches like veterans.
00:21:14They just do.
00:21:15They know what to expect from them.
00:21:16So I do think that's something.
00:21:19I'm just so hesitant, Ryan, because I've been lived through this so many times now of like,
00:21:23oh, this guy has connection with this guy.
00:21:25And like, oh, Justin Fields and Garrett Wilson went to college together.
00:21:29It's going to be great, right?
00:21:30Like, you know, oh, yeah, we have questions about Nate Hackett, but Aaron Rodgers loves
00:21:36him.
00:21:37We'll bring him in.
00:21:38Oh, how's that work out?
00:21:39Like, really, I'm just, I'm at the stage right now, right, where I'm exhausted with the
00:21:44kind of the talk of stuff.
00:21:46We have no idea.
00:21:47We have no way of knowing.
00:21:49You know what we're going to know?
00:21:50In about six weeks when we talk, right?
00:21:53And we have a little example.
00:21:55But I do think Reich, when he speaks about Geno, he's so effusive.
00:22:00That does stand out to me.
00:22:02And I don't think my interactions with Reich, he's a very honest guy.
00:22:07I thought he gives really honest answers when he does talk to us.
00:22:10So I do think he's very high on Geno Smith right now.
00:22:15And Geno's been around a long time.
00:22:17He's played a lot of football.
00:22:19So I think he'll be able to pick up the system.
00:22:21So, you know, I don't worry about that, but, you know, we'll see how it goes.
00:22:26Frankie, when you're looking at Geno for projecting him this upcoming season, what version of Geno
00:22:31do you expect?
00:22:32Is it going to be the Seattle version that we saw or more of the Raiders version that
00:22:36we saw last season?
00:22:38Listen, Ryan and Kaz, I think it's going to come down to the running game.
00:22:43I don't know what this Jets running game is going to look like because I think if they
00:22:47can run the ball, then I think they're not going to want Geno to go out there and do
00:22:52what he did a few years ago in Seattle and throw the ball almost 600 times in a season.
00:22:57And by the way, he did that in Seattle and had a 70% completion percentage that year, which
00:23:02is phenomenal if you think about it.
00:23:03So he can do it, but I'd rather him not do it right now with this team.
00:23:08Everyone's sort of getting to know each other, meshing for the first time, you know, trying
00:23:13to mesh, excuse me, for the first time together.
00:23:14I want to see what this running game looks like, right?
00:23:17I think the running game will predicate what Geno does now on Geno side, specifically target
00:23:23the heck out of Garrett and 80 Mitchell, just pepper them with targets.
00:23:28I wouldn't even worry too much necessarily about if, if it's, you know, if, if the window
00:23:34is not big enough, like get the ball up there, let these guys make plays.
00:23:38If you throw a bunch of interceptions, you throw a bunch of interceptions.
00:23:40I think those guys are talented enough that I don't think you have to think twice about
00:23:45it.
00:23:45And Geno actually did that in 24 when he's throwing a JSN and DK Metcalf, uh, JSN had
00:23:511100 plus yards.
00:23:52DK almost had a thousand yards himself and he got lock it at 600 yards there.
00:23:56So, uh, get the ball out.
00:23:59If you're going to throw it, I don't want to see too much of a conservative approach, but
00:24:02I think it's going to be predicated on the run game guys.
00:24:05I think if breeze can come back and, and, and be, you know, healthy enough to carry the
00:24:10load or Braylon's able to compliment breeze between the tackles and those interior offensive
00:24:16linemen are going to be extremely important in terms of how effective they're going to
00:24:22be running the football.
00:24:23Are they going to get movement up front?
00:24:24Those three talking center, left guard, right guard.
00:24:27I think that's where this offense could become a, you know, talking about an average offense
00:24:32in the NFL, I guys, I think if they can't run the ball as much as Geno is going to
00:24:37try
00:24:37to just throw it all over the yard.
00:24:38And I hope he does.
00:24:40It's going to be, you know, uh, it's going to be a turnover heavy sort of offense.
00:24:44And I don't know if we're ready for that.
00:24:47Uh, you know, I don't know if Glenn's defense is ready for that either to kind of, you know,
00:24:50try to back that up.
00:24:51So, but, um, the running game is where I'm looking, right?
00:24:54Even more than Geno, I think the running game will be his best friend when it comes to
00:24:58his success this year.
00:25:00Well, look, I think there's something, right?
00:25:03Right.
00:25:03One thing that I was just going to say, like the, this isn't very analytical, but it's
00:25:08a thought that keeps popping into my brain.
00:25:11The Seattle Seahawks had Geno Smith.
00:25:14They decided to move on from him and send them to Vegas.
00:25:19They signed Sam Donald and they won the Superbowl.
00:25:22Right.
00:25:22Sam Donald, who left.
00:25:23After the year he just had that I was talking about.
00:25:25Yeah.
00:25:26He's two great seasons.
00:25:27He's had two great seasons.
00:25:28Right.
00:25:29But like, it's not like they brought in, uh, Tom Brady to like the, in Tampa, like the
00:25:35missing, like he, he, he was viewed as the missing piece.
00:25:37Like, so they gave, they, they moved on from Geno Smith and they won the Superbowl.
00:25:43Yeah.
00:25:43So like that.
00:25:44And they're, I don't know if you guys watch hard knocks.
00:25:46I've watched hard knocks and they're an impressive organization.
00:25:49Mike McDonald, John Schneider, really impressive.
00:25:51Like their process has been impressive to watch.
00:25:54And they looked at it and said, yeah, we're, we're, we're going to make a change at the
00:25:58most important position on our team.
00:26:00And it resulted in a Superbowl.
00:26:02So again, I don't know what it means, but it just keeps popping into my brain.
00:26:06When I think about Geno.
00:26:07Note.
00:26:08Cause that is the, and Ryan really quick.
00:26:10Like, I think he's the best GM by the way, in football is Schneider, John Schneider.
00:26:15I think he's been doing it over and over again, rebuilding through the draft.
00:26:20So if he wasn't convinced with Geno, I don't know, maybe there's something else there, but
00:26:25yeah, it is.
00:26:26I was thinking the same thing.
00:26:27You're looking at the numbers cause and Ryan, uh, 4,320 yards, 70% completion.
00:26:33And you're moving on from the guy, like almost a hundred rating.
00:26:36I don't know.
00:26:37It seems weird.
00:26:37Well, they also moved on from, well, they moved on from their head coach as well.
00:26:42Right.
00:26:42And they decided to, but that was two years ago, right?
00:26:45Two years ago.
00:26:46Right.
00:26:46Yeah.
00:26:47McDonald had one year with Geno.
00:26:49He did.
00:26:50That's right.
00:26:50Yeah.
00:26:51But I think him getting to evaluate Geno and saying, yeah, we're not going to win long
00:26:56term with Geno.
00:26:58And I, I would also say to this, I don't think the jets are, they're not trying to
00:27:04contractual thing too, guys.
00:27:05They're not trying to compete for a Superbowl though with Geno, right?
00:27:08Like it's more like, can we get a competitive, can we get an actual offense that can be competitive
00:27:13and keep the, the, the team in the game and not be blown, get their doors blown off heading
00:27:18into the fourth quarter.
00:27:19Um, cause the jets did decide to go with Kate club, Nick as their backup.
00:27:24And there's been some talk about, you know, have they done enough there?
00:27:31Well, I don't know why talk to me, man.
00:27:34I mean, look, well, look, look, right.
00:27:37I'm just saying I'm joking, but it's hard to find a good backup quarterback because if
00:27:41you're a good backup quarterback, you probably should be starting in this league.
00:27:44Anyway, I get that talk, but you are talking about a mid to late round quarterback.
00:27:50That is a rookie that has no NFL starting experience and is going to be one injury away from jumping
00:27:58right into the thing and saying, Hey kid, here you go.
00:28:01Yeah.
00:28:02Yeah.
00:28:03They're rolling the dice, right?
00:28:04They are.
00:28:04There's no doubt about it.
00:28:05I mean, this could blow up on them.
00:28:08I could end up, we don't see him for 17 games and it's fine.
00:28:11Could end up.
00:28:12He plays one game and it's okay.
00:28:13Like I get it though.
00:28:16I think they want to see what they have in this guy and they do that in practice.
00:28:19And if you have another guy in front of him, he doesn't get to run the scout team.
00:28:22Like that guy's going to run the scout team or they're going to be splitting reps.
00:28:25So I think this is really about Wednesday through Friday every week and watching what he can do,
00:28:31you know, as he pretends to be camp Ward next week.
00:28:34And then he pretends to be Jordan love the next week.
00:28:35And I think they want to see that.
00:28:39And like, I just, to your point, how many good backup quarterbacks are there?
00:28:44Mack Jones is good.
00:28:45I think Tyson Bajan is good.
00:28:47I don't know how many others are good.
00:28:49And yeah, if you have Jameis Winston as your backup, like the Giants do,
00:28:53he can probably keep you in a game better than Kade Klubnick can right now.
00:28:58But I think there's a trade-off there.
00:29:00I think that if you're bringing in the veteran, you're stunting his growth.
00:29:04Klubnick, you're going to stunt his development.
00:29:06And I think they do want to find out, like, can he be, can he be the backup long-term?
00:29:11Can he be that guy?
00:29:13And so I get their thinking, and I also understand they're rolling the dice here.
00:29:17Because if he has to play right away, they're probably in trouble.
00:29:22But I do think there's probably a guy on the street that they can bring in if they had to,
00:29:27who's going to be the Jameis, like what I'm talking about.
00:29:30If it ends up Geno's done for the season early in the year,
00:29:33and now you have to sign someone else, I think they can do that pretty easily.
00:29:38Got it.
00:29:40So much of this offense, I think, is going to be predicated on what this offensive line does.
00:29:45And they've invested heavily in this offensive line,
00:29:48just through the draft and through free agency.
00:29:51So, Kaz, is this part of the team, this unit, the offensive line,
00:29:57would you say that is the best unit on this roster?
00:30:05Um, probably.
00:30:06Yeah, that, I think the tight end group has potential to be really good.
00:30:10I think that, and I think running back, depending on the health of these guys,
00:30:14you know, I'd like to see Brees and Isaiah Davis actually back on the field.
00:30:18But I think that's potential.
00:30:19But yeah, I'd go, yeah, they definitely could be.
00:30:23Obviously, Membu and Fashionu, I think, are the lead guys there.
00:30:27Tipman has shown, you know, I thought he had a good season last year at guard.
00:30:31And the other two are kind of question marks to me.
00:30:33But yeah, there's potential there.
00:30:35I think people are getting a little bit ahead of themselves with the offensive line,
00:30:38of like how great it is and things.
00:30:39We need to see it.
00:30:41But they definitely have potential.
00:30:42And I think it's great that this organization has invested in the offensive line
00:30:46after we talked about the years of, you know, trying to shop in the bargain bin
00:30:50during the, you know, basically the 2010s.
00:30:53They, from Vlad Dukas to Mekhi Becton,
00:30:56they didn't draft anyone between those years in the first two rounds.
00:30:59Vlad was 2010, Becton was 2020.
00:31:01They never drafted an offensive lineman in the first or second rounds in all those years,
00:31:05which is just like stunning.
00:31:07So it's good.
00:31:08They've invested now.
00:31:09Yeah.
00:31:10And look, it's a big year for Olu.
00:31:11To prove that he can continue to develop himself as a very good,
00:31:16or a solid to very good left tackle.
00:31:19Mike Clay from ESPN, he projected the offensive line starters and ranked them.
00:31:24He has the Jets overall as a unit 15th in the NFL, which is right in the middle.
00:31:29And I think that makes sense,
00:31:31considering Membu is the strongest part of that unit he has graded out right now.
00:31:35He actually has Dylan Parham as the second strongest on the unit,
00:31:39which I thought was shocking at 6.1 on his rating of 10 from scale 1 to 10.
00:31:44And he has Joe Tittman as the third highest at 5.7 with Olu at fourth highest at 5.2.
00:31:51That's ridiculous.
00:31:52Sorry.
00:31:53I like Mike Clay.
00:31:55No, I do too.
00:31:56I just, come on.
00:31:57Listen, this Olu thing is being way overblown this whole summer.
00:32:02And I've played into it at times myself, just to throw this out there.
00:32:05How many times do you guys remember going into or leaving a game saying that Olu's a liability one way
00:32:12or the other,
00:32:13whether you're worried about him going in or you're leaving and saying he completely blew that up today?
00:32:18Like, never.
00:32:19And that's all you need from a left tackle, right, guys?
00:32:21Like, I remember maybe the Miami game, maybe Tampa, but I don't know.
00:32:26Sorry.
00:32:26He's going to help.
00:32:27Here's the hard part of being a left tackle, right?
00:32:30Yeah.
00:32:30You can play 60 plays, and if you screw up two of them, Frankie's talking about you going to the
00:32:35parking lot, right?
00:32:36That's, it's a hard freaking job.
00:32:37You're right.
00:32:38You know, it's a hard job.
00:32:39And so, but, so he's going to have those days.
00:32:43They all have those days, except maybe Panay Sewell, you know?
00:32:46Like, so it's going to, those days are going to happen.
00:32:48You just need him to be a solid starter to me, guys.
00:32:51Like, you don't, you don't need him to be all pro and all that stuff.
00:32:54Like, you're good if he's just a solid starter.
00:32:56He's out there every week.
00:32:57He stays durable.
00:32:58I mean, to me, that's the conversation about this offensive line.
00:33:03The five of them played 17 games last year, right?
00:33:06ABT was down before we came out.
00:33:08Not Parham, but yes.
00:33:09Not Parham, but last year they had five, their five starters played all 17 games with John Simpson.
00:33:15What are the odds the Jets get through this season with all five starters playing 17 games again?
00:33:20That never happened.
00:33:215%, 2%?
00:33:23Yeah.
00:33:24So now you're going to see these backups.
00:33:29You're going to see Max Mitchell.
00:33:30You're going to see Chooks.
00:33:31You're going to see Meredith.
00:33:34You know, you might see these guys.
00:33:36How do they hold up?
00:33:38And do you see one of them?
00:33:39Do you see two of them?
00:33:40Because you probably, and this is every team in the NFL, I think.
00:33:44Maybe there's a few exceptions.
00:33:45You can survive with one backup offensive lineman, and maybe two.
00:33:50If you get to three, you're dead.
00:33:51Like, there's just not that many human beings on the planet that can play that position.
00:33:55So the durability of these guys, to me, is something to watch.
00:34:00Yeah.
00:34:01And Meredith, they brought in from the Raiders.
00:34:05He's a guard slash center versatility.
00:34:07So I know he can play both spots, Kaz.
00:34:09And they did restructure his contract this year, too.
00:34:13So maybe, hopefully, he's an upgrade as a backup.
00:34:16But again, backup offensive line, you're a backup for a reason.
00:34:19Yeah, it's rough.
00:34:20I do find it amusing that, like, the line about Geno's last season was,
00:34:24well, the offensive line was terrible.
00:34:26So you've got to kind of throw out Geno.
00:34:27They now have two-fifths of the offensive line, and they're building.
00:34:30Right.
00:34:31But...
00:34:31You can't make this up.
00:34:33You can't.
00:34:36But, with context, the Jets do have two tackles you have confidence in,
00:34:41as long as they're healthy, that can keep him upright.
00:34:44But I am, if I'm being real, and I'm going to be a little critical,
00:34:48I think they're a little too thin in the middle.
00:34:50Meaning, I don't think they're strong enough at the center or the guard spots.
00:34:54Even with Joe Tippman, I know people like, Kaz, you say you thought he was better.
00:34:58I think they need more beef in the middle to push some guys around.
00:35:02And I wonder if they're going to struggle to run the ball as well as they had hoped
00:35:05just because I don't know if they have enough body movers
00:35:08in the middle of that offensive line.
00:35:09Something to watch.
00:35:10And speaking of the run game, Brees Hall, he's coming back, obviously.
00:35:15Signing extension in the offseason, Kaz.
00:35:17Coming off a groin injury, Glenn says he expects him ready for week one.
00:35:21Will there be, like, a little bit of, I don't know, like,
00:35:25precautionary tape around Kaz, around Hall week one?
00:35:30And Kaz, yes.
00:35:31And Kaz.
00:35:34Yeah, I would think so.
00:35:38You know, we were at practice yesterday.
00:35:40He was doing nothing.
00:35:41He was just standing watching.
00:35:43I did see him last week.
00:35:44He was on the side field.
00:35:45He was running.
00:35:46I'd say probably 80% he was doing it.
00:35:49And he wasn't really doing hard cuts.
00:35:51He was sort of doing, like, weaves, I would describe it as.
00:35:55So, you got to see it.
00:35:56Like, you know, I think we'll know.
00:35:59They're actually, next week, they're practicing on Tuesday.
00:36:01But I don't think they have to do an injury report.
00:36:03So, we'll probably get the projected injury report on Wednesday.
00:36:06Then they'll practice Thursday.
00:36:08We're going to have to see how much he's doing.
00:36:09But, yeah, using your brain, I don't think he's going to have a full workload week one.
00:36:13And because he's coming back from this, they're going to have to be careful with him.
00:36:16Yeah.
00:36:16And they're also getting the return of Braylon Allen, who missed a lot of the year last year with a
00:36:21knee injury.
00:36:22Isaiah Davis, who's the other part of this backfield.
00:36:25And Davis hasn't been out there in weeks, right?
00:36:27And, like, I haven't seen him do anything.
00:36:29Like, I haven't seen him run out of side field or anything.
00:36:31He's got a big sleeve on his leg.
00:36:33All they told us was a knee injury.
00:36:35He's just out there watching.
00:36:37Like, it's been a while.
00:36:38So, I would not be shocked if Davis isn't out there for week one.
00:36:41I know Dr. Glenn keeps saying he'll be back for week one.
00:36:45But Dr. Glenn told us D'Angelo Pons was going to be fine about six weeks ago when he doesn't
00:36:50practice.
00:36:51One of these conversations I always have with the teams is they should make the doctor, like,
00:36:57they never want to let the doctors talk to the media.
00:36:59But they should because I just think it would avoid some of the confusion about some of these injuries.
00:37:04Because, like, the Joseph Osai explanation the other day made my head spin.
00:37:09And, you know, maybe he talked to us on background or something and not in front of the cameras.
00:37:14But it would help.
00:37:15But, yeah, so I'm not sure you'll see Isaiah Davis week one, Ryan.
00:37:18That's the one I'm watching.
00:37:19Kaz and Ryan, Kike and Guanu, RB1 week one.
00:37:23We ready for it?
00:37:26That would be shocking.
00:37:27He's playing some running back, Ryan.
00:37:28Yeah, I know.
00:37:29I know.
00:37:29They're carrying him on this active roster.
00:37:32So, how much Braille and Allen should we expect, Kaz, early on this season?
00:37:36I think a lot.
00:37:37Yeah.
00:37:37Yeah, I think a lot.
00:37:38I think you're going to see a heavy workload for Braille and Allen.
00:37:41That's what I would project because he's been practicing and he's been out there.
00:37:45And so, you know, the breeze is a question mark.
00:37:49We're now, what are we, 10 days away from the game?
00:37:51So, we got to get closer and see if he's practicing fully next week that you feel good about it.
00:37:57But if he's limited or not practicing, that is a question mark.
00:38:01And I just don't know if you're going to give him, you know, 30 touches in a game right now
00:38:05coming off a groin injury.
00:38:06So, I would expect a heavy dose of Braille and Allen.
00:38:09And with Frank Wright calling the plays, would you expect there to be a heavy dosage of using these running
00:38:14backs, especially like trying to pound the rock early on and often?
00:38:18Yeah.
00:38:19I mean, look, Jonathan Taylor in Indianapolis, right?
00:38:21That was the bread and butter in Indianapolis with him.
00:38:24And they, he went through a million quarterbacks after Andrew Luck retired.
00:38:29So, they never really got it going there.
00:38:31But it was Jonathan Taylor's show and Braille and Allen is another Wisconsin running back.
00:38:35So, maybe, maybe that's, maybe that means something.
00:38:38Maybe.
00:38:39I mean, he's got to prove himself, stay healthy and be effective.
00:38:43If he's going to be a three down back early on, too, if they're going to feed him more than
00:38:46Brees just because they want to ease Brees back into the workload.
00:38:51Frankie, Braille, and what does he have to prove to you this year to show that he can be a
00:38:54competent RB, too?
00:38:57Well, I noticed when Braylon first got into the league, he'd always make that first tackler miss, always.
00:39:05And that slowly started going away.
00:39:07I don't know if it was running style or he was running too high or injuries started piling up.
00:39:13But that's what I want to see out of Braylon.
00:39:15He has that James Conner sort of running style where they're coming at you high, they'll dip a bit, they'll
00:39:23shimmy you off, and then they're, you know, going into the next level.
00:39:29That's how he runs.
00:39:30He runs like James Conner.
00:39:32And you notice James Conner, when he runs well, he always makes the first tackler miss.
00:39:35So, we'll know early on with Braylon Allen, is that first tackler, is he making a miss?
00:39:40If not, or if the tackler's hanging around, he's not the type of, you know, back that is going to
00:39:45be able to, you know, take that much of a beating and stay twitchy throughout a game.
00:39:51He'll slow down a bit.
00:39:52He's more of a bruiser kind of style.
00:39:54So, that's what I want to see out of him.
00:39:56But I really liked Braylon Allen out of Wisconsin.
00:40:00I did, even before we drafted him.
00:40:02I thought he was great value in the fourth round for us.
00:40:06We needed a back like that, but we remember the fumble last year and the injury kicked in because of
00:40:13a kickoff return.
00:40:14Why he was returning kicks, nobody knows.
00:40:16But it stinks that he had that happen to him last year.
00:40:21But, yeah, Kaz is right.
00:40:23And, guys, he's going to be probably the most important part of that run game come week one, two, or
00:40:29three.
00:40:29I think he'll help Brees a lot.
00:40:31And Brees, I love Brees as an athlete, as a back overall, as a weapon.
00:40:39Between the tackles, as a workhorse, I don't know yet.
00:40:43I think he struggles sometimes seeing between the tackles.
00:40:47I think Braylon sometimes is a little bit better at just seeing it, those cutback lanes.
00:40:52He kind of gets it a little bit more between the tackles, I'm saying.
00:40:55So, I think they'll help each other out.
00:40:57You got, like, a David Montgomery, Jameer Gibbs, not saying anywhere close to that, but you want to do something
00:41:02like that with these guys.
00:41:04And that'll help everybody else out.
00:41:08Let's go to the receivers and tight ends.
00:41:10This, like Kaz said, has the potential to be a special group.
00:41:15Garrett Wilson, coming off the knee injury, is now healthy.
00:41:18He is the centerpiece of this offense.
00:41:20Adonai Mitchell, we're hoping they can be emerging as a wide receiver, too, as Jets fans.
00:41:24Then you have the rookie, Omar Cooper, Jr., with Mason Taylor, who they drafted last year, and Kenyon Sadiq, the
00:41:29rookie first-round pick this year.
00:41:31Kaz, when you're looking at the collection of this weaponry, is this a real set of weapons and targets that
00:41:39the Jets have?
00:41:41Potentially, right?
00:41:42I think Garrett's the only one you're kind of penciling in going, I know what to expect from this guy.
00:41:48Like, he's going to catch 90 passes.
00:41:49He's going to have 1,000 yards if he stays healthy.
00:41:51Can he do more than that, is the question.
00:41:55But the rest of them, you're kind of like, okay, let's go see what you got.
00:41:59But Mitchell's had some really good moments in training camp.
00:42:02He obviously is a second-round pick.
00:42:04He's got the skills.
00:42:06It just hasn't come together for him in the NFL yet.
00:42:08Can he do that this year?
00:42:10And then Mason Taylor, to me, he's had one of the best training camps of anyone.
00:42:16He's just made tremendous plays, really good catches.
00:42:20He seems to be always open.
00:42:22I think he and Geno have a good connection.
00:42:25They worked out in South Florida together all offseason, three or four days a week.
00:42:29They were spending 90 minutes on a turf field down in the heat of South Florida together.
00:42:34So I think there's something there.
00:42:36And Sadiq, we just haven't seen.
00:42:37He's back practicing.
00:42:39I've seen him out there doing stuff this week.
00:42:41So I think sort of like Brees, you'll see him.
00:42:44But I'm not sure how much you'll see him early on in the season.
00:42:47Frankie, who do you expect or who do you think is the favorite to emerge as the second leading receiver
00:42:53of this team?
00:42:57Listen, it's going to be A.D. Mitchell, guys.
00:43:00The way he's looked, speaking of looking great in camp, I think he's looked phenomenal.
00:43:04The way he moves, Ryan, we spoke about this, how many times that he's got the talent of a wide
00:43:10receiver one.
00:43:11It's just putting it all together, like Kaz was saying.
00:43:14So he's going to be your second leading receiver.
00:43:17And I think some games he's going to be your top guy.
00:43:20I think we saw him last year when Tyrod Taylor came in.
00:43:23He had a big day.
00:43:24So when he actually had a real quarterback playing, he went off.
00:43:28So I think he's going to be a big weapon for us.
00:43:31And if he can just keep it together, and I don't know what that really means for him.
00:43:37You know, he was a second-round pick, and he should have been a first and dropped a bit.
00:43:42So I don't know what his issues are there where he, you know, sometimes is in and out of game
00:43:47plans or scripts or whatever.
00:43:48But if he locks in, him and Garrett will be as good as any duo we've had since, you know,
00:43:56Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, honestly.
00:43:58They have the potential there, I think.
00:43:59They really do.
00:44:00Well, the one thing I'll say is Marshall and Decker were well-established as both really good receivers in the
00:44:06NFL at that point.
00:44:07You hope that they can both eclipse 1,000 yards.
00:44:10I think that would be like a dream season for the Jets.
00:44:12If Adonai Mitchell's in that 800, 700, 800 yards, and Garrett's well over 1,000, I think you're looking at
00:44:19a successful wide receiver, too, there from A.D. Mitchell.
00:44:22And he has the potential, like we said.
00:44:24He's just got to be consistent in terms of getting targets and getting open.
00:44:29Kaz, on the tight end side, you talked about Mason Taylor and how good he's looked in training camp.
00:44:34Kenyon Sadiq has missed all of training camp with a setback from the hernia surgery.
00:44:39He is practicing, it looked like, just from all reports this week.
00:44:43But when Frank Reich is trying to deploy his full tight end package, which includes, I'm sure, Jelani Woods and
00:44:50Jeremy Ruckert, who are also on the team,
00:44:52how much will he slow play that into the offense here early on just because of the Sadiq injury and
00:44:59coming back from it?
00:45:00Yeah, I think you're limited in how many different formations you can use with him and that kind of stuff.
00:45:06And like the, you know, were you thinking of using him in the backfield at some point?
00:45:11Were you thinking of running ender rounds to him?
00:45:13Like, I think you might be a little more limited in that regard.
00:45:17But to me, guys, he's almost the number three wide receiver.
00:45:20Like, I see that going to be his role.
00:45:22I know the Omar Cooper-Isaiah Williams debate was hot and heavy this August.
00:45:27I just, I'm willing to bet there's going to be times when it's Sadiq is out there as like the
00:45:32third receiver and Mason Taylor is at tight end and they do stuff like that.
00:45:35I just think those two guys are too talented to keep them off of the field.
00:45:40And I have questions about Cooper and Williams right now.
00:45:44So, I would bet that.
00:45:45But, yeah, it's going to be, it's not going to be everything they envisioned, right?
00:45:48It can't be.
00:45:49He just, he hasn't, he didn't practice all spring and then he was out there for like three days this
00:45:53summer.
00:45:53So, they've got to sort of work him back in now.
00:45:57For sure.
00:45:57For sure.
00:45:59Let's switch to the defensive side of the ball, guys.
00:46:01And I think we should talk about the fact, again, zero interceptions last year.
00:46:08Still unbelievable that that happened.
00:46:09And only four total takeaways.
00:46:12But now they've brought in a lot of players.
00:46:14And, Kaz, I would love to hear your thoughts on how does this naturally become a focus for this team
00:46:21where they can make turnovers happen and actually get some interceptions?
00:46:26I think it has to be every defense is focused, right?
00:46:29That's football, right?
00:46:30What's the biggest, you know, cliche?
00:46:32Whoever wins the turnover battle, you know, usually wins the game.
00:46:35And, you know, every coach from Pee Wee football to the NFL talks about that.
00:46:40So, I think, you know, they've got some guys with Minka who's, you know, in his career, he's been around
00:46:47the ball a lot.
00:46:50You know, I just also think the amazing part of last year to me was the luck part of it.
00:46:55So, big thing in turnovers is luck.
00:46:58Like, there's going to be tipped balls that they catch this year.
00:47:01There's going to be a Hail Mary attempt at the end of the first half that a guy intercepts in
00:47:06the end zone.
00:47:06And that's an interception.
00:47:08And there's just going to be some luck turnovers.
00:47:11There has to be.
00:47:12It has to turn around.
00:47:13So, but I do think DeMario Davis will help in this regard, too.
00:47:18I think they're just going to be lined up better.
00:47:20Can they get more pressure on the quarterback?
00:47:22Does Bailey help there?
00:47:24Can they stop the run now?
00:47:26And just, you know, it's all kind of interlocked.
00:47:29But there's no way they can do this again.
00:47:34So, there's going to be interceptions, I promise you.
00:47:36I know the Jets are hoping they come early so that we can stop talking about this whole thing.
00:47:41And they were celebrating the ones in Pittsburgh and the one against the Giants.
00:47:44They were very happy that they got those.
00:47:46So, I think they're really hoping that Cam Ward throws them one or two on September 13th.
00:47:52You know, I was going to say this to the end for predictions, but screw it.
00:47:55Let's do it right now.
00:47:57Kaz, give me the week.
00:47:59When did the Jets get their first interception of the season?
00:48:02I think it's week one.
00:48:04I think Cam Ward will give them one.
00:48:05Yeah, I do.
00:48:06I do.
00:48:07I just, yeah.
00:48:09And for everyone's sanity, I kind of hope it happens, too.
00:48:12So, that I, God, the thought of having to ask Aaron Glenn in, like, week five about having zero interceptions,
00:48:18that that will not be fun.
00:48:21Frankie, what's your prediction?
00:48:24You really want to know?
00:48:25Yeah.
00:48:26Oh, here we go.
00:48:27When's the bi-week?
00:48:28When's the bi-week?
00:48:29Oh, my God.
00:48:30I'm joking.
00:48:31I'm kidding.
00:48:32I'm kidding.
00:48:33I'm kidding.
00:48:33No, I'm going to go week two.
00:48:35Ready?
00:48:36Week two.
00:48:37It'll be at the home opener, so everyone can celebrate it there.
00:48:39It'll be nice.
00:48:40They can light off fireworks or something.
00:48:43And then it's going to be by someone on the front seven.
00:48:47So, it'll be a defensive lineman or a linebacker.
00:48:49It won't be by a D-back.
00:48:50It's going to be a tip ball up in the air.
00:48:53Maybe Bailey or McDonald hit the quarterback's arm.
00:48:56It'll fall right in someone's lap.
00:48:58That's how I view it happening.
00:49:01Speaking of David Bailey and this front pressure.
00:49:03What about you, Ryan?
00:49:04What's your prediction?
00:49:05I like week two.
00:49:06I don't know if they get one week one.
00:49:08I know Cam Ward, obviously, he's going into his second year.
00:49:12That offensive line's not supposed to be good.
00:49:14But Jordan Love loves throwing some interceptions himself.
00:49:17And at home, it would be fun for the Jets to break that interception drought.
00:49:24But speaking of the front, and the addition of David Bailey at the number two overall pick,
00:49:29they've added Osai, Enigbari, Tavondre Sweat.
00:49:33Demario Davis joins the front seven.
00:49:36Frankie, how much better will this front seven be this year?
00:49:41Well, like Kaz said earlier, he thinks the offensive line is the strength of this team.
00:49:46I actually think it's the front seven.
00:49:47I think the defensive line specifically, I really like.
00:49:51I love the linebackers for the most part.
00:49:53So I think that'll be the strength.
00:49:54I do.
00:49:55I think that'll be a unit that with Demario Davis calling the shots there.
00:50:01And there's talent, obviously.
00:50:04There's talent on the inside with Sweat, Briggs, and Phillips.
00:50:07You have talent on the outside with McDonald and Bailey.
00:50:10I think the unit's going to be pretty damn good.
00:50:13Now, I think Enigbari and Osai, they add different elements there in how flexible they are.
00:50:19They could play on the inside a little bit outside.
00:50:21They could even play at the middle linebacker position if you want to put them there.
00:50:26It's on Glenn, though, with those guys in terms of how he wants to structure that front
00:50:32and what he wants to do when it comes to different stunts and different alignments.
00:50:38You can do a lot with those guys.
00:50:40This whole defense, if you kind of look up and down the defense on the defensive card,
00:50:45you can play these guys in a lot of different spots, honestly.
00:50:49You could play them really in a multitude of areas.
00:50:51So that's been a thing that Glenn, I think, has wanted with these players.
00:50:55Like even someone like Harrison Phillips, he used to be a five technique, but then he used
00:50:59to play on the inside.
00:51:00Sometimes he played nose tackle.
00:51:01Like there's a bunch of guys in the defense and the secondary guys that could play inside,
00:51:05outside, safeties, you know, nickel corners, like all over the place.
00:51:09So Glenn now has to put this puzzle together and it's on him.
00:51:14If he does a good enough job, all you want to do as a defense is confuse the offense.
00:51:19That is your job at the end of the day.
00:51:20The offense doesn't know what you're running and they think they know what you're running
00:51:24and then you do something else and it catches them off balance and they turn it over.
00:51:29They don't complete a ball or they get, you know, negative yards.
00:51:32That's what this defense can do, but it's on Aaron Glenn and he's calling the defense.
00:51:37I'm not, I'm not looking at Brian Duker here.
00:51:39Like it's, it's Glenn's job.
00:51:42So cause, uh, Joseph Asai, uh, looks like he ruptured his plantar fascia in one of his
00:51:48feet.
00:51:49Um, according to Aaron Glenn, is this guy, they call him week to week.
00:51:55He can't be playing week one, right?
00:51:57No, not week one, I would think, but they didn't put him on IR.
00:52:00So that tells you they don't think it's a four week injury.
00:52:03Usually when a guy, when a coach is week to week, that's like a two to four week injury.
00:52:07And so we're now two weeks out, right?
00:52:09Like, so I would think week two is a possibility to watch, but I, that explanation for Aaron
00:52:16Glenn wasn't completely clear to me.
00:52:18So I don't know what to expect, but I do lock in when a coach is week to week.
00:52:21That's usually like two to four weeks they're talking about.
00:52:24And that's a blow to their edge, uh, depth, right?
00:52:26Because they brought in him and Enibari.
00:52:28Uh, now you would expect Bailey and Enibari to be the starters with Will McDonald as one of
00:52:33those guys rotating in.
00:52:34Uh, this is a big year for Will cause just in terms of if he wants to.
00:52:39Potentially prove himself as a full, not full, I wouldn't call him a full-time pass rusher,
00:52:43but a real impact for, as a pass rusher and disruptive.
00:52:47Can he develop and have the tools to do something like that this year?
00:52:52Or has he kind of just, he can't put it together.
00:52:56He's not great against the run.
00:52:57He only earned himself third down reps.
00:53:02I don't think the coaching staff loves him, Rye.
00:53:04Like it's just the vibes that just watching how they've used them this summer.
00:53:09They say all the right things.
00:53:10They're not saying anything about them, but just, you know, Pittsburgh stood out where
00:53:16they played the starters three series basically.
00:53:20Um, and he didn't come into the third series and then he stayed in the game after the rest
00:53:23of the starters left, just watching him all summer, early in the summer, you know, he,
00:53:29he was kind of fighting for first team reps.
00:53:33So I don't know.
00:53:34I don't know if he's going to be able to do it right.
00:53:35Cause I'm not sure how many chances he's going to have.
00:53:37And I think Frank to Frankie's point, I think the big story of this defensive line is maybe
00:53:42how Aaron Glenn deploys them.
00:53:44And I guarantee he's going to drive fans crazy.
00:53:49Cause this always drives fans crazy where they have third and eight and David Bailey's not
00:53:54in the field.
00:53:55Or yeah, as I pointed out to him where he dropped him in coverage, Pittsburgh got third
00:53:59and eight, like that crap drives you crazy.
00:54:02And, um, I could just see that happening here as he rotates through guys.
00:54:07Um, so yeah, I, I, I'm not sure will is going to get enough chances.
00:54:12That's my question with him.
00:54:14Yeah.
00:54:14And, uh, the thing, the thing that I will say too, is on those scenarios where they, he
00:54:20might drive us crazy.
00:54:21I get it.
00:54:22These coaches like to set up some pressures into others because they, they, they have a
00:54:27thought of like, Oh, I, I see this look.
00:54:29I want to set this, this pass rush up.
00:54:32Um, don't put David Bailey in past coverage.
00:54:35He is a, I just saw, yes, I just saw something, Ryan made me laugh.
00:54:42Uh, Lawrence Taylor, uh, was from the top 100 a few years ago that the NFL did.
00:54:47And Parcells is telling the story.
00:54:49They're playing the Cardinals and Taylor's supposed to drop in the coverage on this play.
00:54:55And he goes in and he sacks, you know, Lomax was the Cardinals core, right?
00:54:58He gets a sack and he comes on the side and Parcells said, you're supposed to drop.
00:55:03What are you doing?
00:55:04And else he's like, yeah, my bad.
00:55:05I'm sorry.
00:55:06You know, I, I forgot.
00:55:07I'll mess.
00:55:08I messed that one up next time later in the game, same situation comes up.
00:55:13He's supposed to drop.
00:55:14He goes in.
00:55:15Now this time, not only does he hit what the Oomax, he knocks the ball loose and Leonard
00:55:18Marshall returns it for a touchdown.
00:55:21So they're all celebrating.
00:55:22Everything comes off.
00:55:23And Parcells said, he's just giving them the death stare as he walks to the sideline.
00:55:27And LT looks at him and goes, oh man, I did it again.
00:55:30Didn't I?
00:55:31And Parcells says, yeah.
00:55:32He goes, he goes, I, Parcells says, I don't even know what you're doing out there.
00:55:35And we don't even have that in a playbook and LT goes, maybe we should put it in.
00:55:39It's pretty, it worked pretty well.
00:55:42So that's it.
00:55:43You know, these coaches all want to design stuff, but yeah, I hope they just let Bailey
00:55:47run, run free.
00:55:50Frankie.
00:55:51I mean, that's, that's all you're paying attention to with your boy leading the Bailey
00:55:55boys group.
00:55:57Listen, man, I think, I think Bailey is, is in for a really good rookie season.
00:56:03I just, I just think he's got everything right out of the box.
00:56:08I mean, he's the thing with Bailey and looking at him as much as I have every year, he's
00:56:14gone better every year, significant until last year.
00:56:17He's the best pass rusher in college by a mile.
00:56:20And the year before he was actually the top two pass rusher, top three.
00:56:24I think he's going to get over 10 sacks this year, guys, not to go into predictions.
00:56:28You're already going into predictions.
00:56:31I do, I think 10 and a half, I have 10 and a half.
00:56:35I have, I've over 10, so I have 10 and a half.
00:56:38I have, I have the half, the half helps me say I have over 10.
00:56:41Right.
00:56:42But, um, I do cause, I mean, you could sit there and laugh at me, but I am talent.
00:56:47Can we overdub the love song here, Ryan, as he talks about David Bailey?
00:56:50I'm going to put a heart eye emoji over his eyes.
00:56:54Well, you know what?
00:56:55Power ballad going?
00:56:56I don't know that reference.
00:56:58Sam, can we got it?
00:56:59Power ballads from the 80s, the metal bands made love songs.
00:57:03Oh, okay.
00:57:05Yeah.
00:57:05We need a power ballad for Frankie and David Bailey.
00:57:09Look, he's going to be, uh, he's going to be singing David Bailey's praises next week
00:57:13at the Ainsworth.
00:57:15For all you Jets fans, we hope you meet us out there because David Bailey is going to be
00:57:19making his first public appearance and Frankie will get to gush over him in person.
00:57:22It'll be something to see.
00:57:24Um, I'm going to ask him actually what I think his prediction is going to be.
00:57:27So that'll be nice.
00:57:28I was like, did David, like, what are you?
00:57:30He's not going to tell you.
00:57:31He's not talking yesterday.
00:57:32He's not going to tell you.
00:57:33Yeah.
00:57:34Okay.
00:57:34All right.
00:57:37Yeah.
00:57:37Ryan, did you ever see the Saturday Night Live skit with Chris Farley interviewing Paul
00:57:41McCartney?
00:57:42Yes.
00:57:43That's going to be Frankie interviewing David Bailey.
00:57:46That's a good one.
00:57:47See, now that we can make a clip.
00:57:48We'll make a clip out of that one.
00:57:50Let's talk about this secondary fellows to finish up this defensive part of the episode.
00:57:55Mika Fitzpatrick is the newcomer here on the safety spot.
00:57:59Big acquisition.
00:58:00They gave him a big contract as well.
00:58:03And then, obviously, when Sauce Gardner goes away, it's just Brandon Stevens and a collection
00:58:09of people now.
00:58:10Right now, it's Brandon Stevens, AZ Thomas, Nashawn Wright, and D'Angelo Pons, who I'm a little
00:58:16concerned about, the fact that he's missed all of training camp and still isn't practicing
00:58:19Kaz.
00:58:20So, talk to me about the secondary.
00:58:22And is this unit going to be good enough to actually turn the ball over or limit some
00:58:30opposing passing attacks?
00:58:33Yeah, I think it's the weakness of the team.
00:58:35When you look at it, they'll get some turnovers, but I just think there's going to be days when
00:58:39they get gashed and when they run into some of these quarterbacks.
00:58:42You know, look at Jared Goff coming up and Caleb Williams coming up.
00:58:47Like, they could have big days against the secondary.
00:58:49There's just kind of weak, right?
00:58:53Outside of Minka Fitzpatrick, and even he has questions, right?
00:58:59He's slipping, you know, as his play declined.
00:59:01We'll find out.
00:59:03He's looked good in camp.
00:59:04I think he's, but, you know, it's a different world once the season starts.
00:59:07But, yeah, I think it's the weakness right now and it's the question mark about this team
00:59:11that you have.
00:59:13So, you know, we'll see.
00:59:15I think you've got to mention Jarvis Brownlee, too, Riley.
00:59:18He'll be the slot.
00:59:19I don't think D'Angelo Pons, I don't see what world he'll be active for this game.
00:59:23Like, he hasn't practiced at all.
00:59:25So, I would expect Jarvis Brownlee will be your slot corner for that week one game.
00:59:31Kaz, has Malakai Moore fallen out of favor here?
00:59:34Is he not going to get a lot of playing time?
00:59:37How do you...
00:59:37Yeah, I don't think, I think he's the, what would it be, the fourth safety.
00:59:42Yeah, right, you got Minka, I do think Belton is probably the starter,
00:59:46and then you have Sisko, and I think Moore is behind them.
00:59:49So, yeah, I think he's a special teamer right now, Frankie.
00:59:52Wow.
00:59:53And then if there's an injury, obviously things change,
00:59:56but I think right now he's looking at just playing special teams.
01:00:00Tough blow for Pons, and you were counting on him to be a part of this secondary,
01:00:07especially early on, to help it see where its potential could be.
01:00:12And it's not been a great start for him and Sadiq as rookies for their first years as Jets.
01:00:18Before we get into prediction part of this episode, guys, to wrap up,
01:00:22I want to talk about the tanking firestorm that Mr. Vitterini started earlier this week.
01:00:28Kaz, he believes that the Jets should go 1-16 versus 6-11 this year to completely...
01:00:37If I had to pick.
01:00:37If he had to pick because he has to reset this entire coach-quarterback spot
01:00:43and that the only way they can do that is by having the first overall pick.
01:00:47He even went in-depth about how Super Bowls are won by No. 1 picks
01:00:51at a higher clip in the history of the NFL, the draft,
01:00:54more so than any other spot in the first round
01:00:57and how you need to get that No. 1 pick to find the quarterback
01:01:00to take you to the promised land.
01:01:03I would argue...
01:01:03Not always.
01:01:04And I would argue that's not so...
01:01:06The highest probability, technically.
01:01:08Technically, but I would argue that's not how the current modern-day NFL
01:01:12wins football games now.
01:01:13But, Kaz, talk to me here.
01:01:16Is Frankie in the wrong here about thinking about tanky V
01:01:19and he wants to tank this year?
01:01:23Well, let me get you what you're saying, Frankie, first.
01:01:26Are you saying that the Jets should tank?
01:01:28Like, that they should just go into the season trying to lose?
01:01:31Like, what are you saying?
01:01:32No, no, I'm not saying that.
01:01:33That was the whole point.
01:01:35That was the whole part of this that got...
01:01:36Or my point that got taken completely out of context.
01:01:39I'm rooting for the Jets to win Week 1.
01:01:43NFL's crazy.
01:01:44You never know.
01:01:45You might come out hot.
01:01:45Who knows?
01:01:46My point was, if the season's getting to a point where 6 or 7 wins
01:01:52is looking at you, or you can just bottom out,
01:01:57go 1-16 or 2-15 or 3-13 or 3-14, excuse me again,
01:02:03I'd rather do that and just not lie to ourselves and say that
01:02:07or not pretend like Glenn and this foundation he's trying to build
01:02:12has longevity.
01:02:13And that's the point.
01:02:15And my point was, I think this team is better off that happening
01:02:20than, like, some 7-win season saying,
01:02:23oh, Glenn should stick around.
01:02:24We're trying to build this Dan Campbell-Lyons thing.
01:02:27I just think we're continuing to delay the inevitable in Glenn
01:02:32and the system.
01:02:33And, again, I have to see how it looks.
01:02:35So I'm kind of prognosticating here into the future,
01:02:37which you don't want to do really.
01:02:38But I think these quarterbacks are not...
01:02:42People are like, well, we did it with Zach Wilson.
01:02:43Zach Wilson wasn't Trevor Lawrence.
01:02:45And when we did it with Darnold, Darnold was the third pick.
01:02:48There was a quarterback selected in front of him also.
01:02:50Like, I just, again, I think if you can guarantee one of these top guys
01:02:55in this draft and you were to tell me that this Glenn thing doesn't look
01:02:59all that good, doesn't feel right, doesn't smell right,
01:03:02let's get the number one or two pick.
01:03:05Let's end up with Arch or Dante Moore or whomever, CJ Carr,
01:03:09however that works out, get a new head coach in here with this roster
01:03:13and this offensive line, to me it just feels more refreshing
01:03:16than us trying to, like, hold on to this Glenn thing.
01:03:19I don't know.
01:03:19I kind of went a little bit all over the place there.
01:03:21But do you get what I'm saying?
01:03:22Like, I just look around the league, guys.
01:03:24Like, it's just – there's so many teams that can make the same arguments
01:03:30for why they can be good and win as we are with Glenn.
01:03:35And I just – I don't know.
01:03:37Maybe the first year rubbed me the wrong way, but it was just – I just –
01:03:40I listened to the guy and I'm just getting vibes of, like,
01:03:43this is another defensive guy that's not going to work here.
01:03:46I just – I don't know.
01:03:47I feel it.
01:03:48I'm sorry.
01:03:48But that's just the reality.
01:03:52I get what you're saying.
01:03:53I understand that the middle ground thing doesn't really appeal to you, right?
01:04:00Like, you'd rather just bottom out.
01:04:03I do think the larger conversation here is going to be about Darren Muji,
01:04:08to be honest.
01:04:11He's gotten a lot of praise so far, right, for making these kind of moves
01:04:16in the margins and adding players, you know, whether it's Harrison Phillips
01:04:21or Juwan Briggs last year or Tavondre Sweat this year.
01:04:25Like, you know, not huge impact moves, but things that feel solid.
01:04:29So now I'm going to come down to can you pick a quarterback?
01:04:32And that might be a 1.
01:04:34That might be a 10.
01:04:35That might be a 12.
01:04:36Like, the key thing – and I'm sure, Frankie, you've gotten all these names
01:04:39thrown back in your face this week, whether it's Patrick Mahomes
01:04:42or Josh Allen, guys get picked at different positions
01:04:45and have success at quarterback.
01:04:47It's about having the guy in your building to identify that, right?
01:04:50Because the Jets had – the Jets could have taken those guys,
01:04:54and they didn't.
01:04:55They didn't have the right GM to say, you know what?
01:04:57This Patrick Mahomes guy, he's going to be really, really good.
01:05:01We have the sixth pick.
01:05:02Let's take him.
01:05:02Now we're going to take Jamal Adams instead.
01:05:05Then they had – you know, the same guy took Sam Darnold over Josh Allen,
01:05:11and Sam has worked out now, but it took a long time.
01:05:14But Josh, probably one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
01:05:19I don't think you can say that about Joe Douglas,
01:05:21and I don't think there was a good answer when he took Zach Wilson.
01:05:23But can Darren Mugee identify that quarterback out of this group
01:05:27that's going to be the guy?
01:05:28And then, yeah, then are they in position to take him?
01:05:30But I don't know.
01:05:32I think there's some maybe unintended consequences, Frankie,
01:05:37from your scenario.
01:05:38Like, does Garrett Wilson demand a trade if that's the case?
01:05:40Yeah, that's the other thing.
01:05:42If you're 1-16, Mugee's out the door.
01:05:45You're bringing a new GM.
01:05:46And now we see all the turnover this roster has undergone.
01:05:50Like, I started looking at it with Robert Sala in mind.
01:05:52Like, oh, who played for Sala?
01:05:54On defense, it's basically Jamie and Sherwood and Will McDonald.
01:05:57That's it.
01:05:58Like, they've completely turned the defense over.
01:06:00The offense is a little more, but they've turned that over pretty good, too.
01:06:04Now you're doing that again.
01:06:06And so you're back at square one.
01:06:08I guess your question, Frankie, like that people have to ask for you
01:06:11and other fans is do you feel like with this Aaron Glenn
01:06:14and Darren Mugee regime, are you at square two right now, square three?
01:06:19Are you still at square one?
01:06:20And are you okay next year starting over again?
01:06:23Or do you feel like they've been made progress that's going to be torn down
01:06:26if you go 1-16?
01:06:28Well, let me just say that.
01:06:29I think, to be honest, I don't know how you can – I don't know how fans –
01:06:34and they've said this to me, too, Kaz.
01:06:35I don't know how you can think we're at square two after last year.
01:06:38Last year was bottom of the barrel.
01:06:41Like, you have to establish square one.
01:06:43Now you could, I think, skip a step.
01:06:45You could skip square one and go to square two if things look good this year
01:06:48and sort of say that last year you kind of learned.
01:06:50But, Kaz, I'm going down this list, too.
01:06:53Like, yeah, they threw at me Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes.
01:06:57If you look at quarterbacks since – I did since 1990 that have won Super Bowls.
01:07:02Now, it's a weird stat because Eli wasn't technically drafted by the Giants.
01:07:07Right.
01:07:07And Brady really messes the whole thing.
01:07:11Yeah.
01:07:12Exactly.
01:07:12Yes.
01:07:13That six-rounder is like, yeah.
01:07:15But, like, Mahomes went to the Chiefs.
01:07:18Ralph Asperger went to the Steelers.
01:07:20Flacco was the Ravens.
01:07:22Like, these are teams that have, like, a stab –
01:07:25Flacco, Ravens, Rogers, Packers.
01:07:28It's like a quarterback, you know, and that's a deal for him.
01:07:32Frank, I think the Super Bowl thing –
01:07:33I think the Super Bowl thing is flawed, right?
01:07:36Because I think there's so many factors.
01:07:38There's so many factors that result in winning a Super Bowl, right?
01:07:41And we've seen that.
01:07:42Sam Darn won a Super Bowl.
01:07:44Was Sam Darn the reason that Seahawks won the Super Bowl?
01:07:46He was a reason, but he wasn't the reason, right?
01:07:50Yeah.
01:07:50You want to get a quarterback like Josh Allen or Joe Burrow.
01:07:53They haven't won any Super Bowls.
01:07:55But, like, if you're the Jets, are you signing up for Josh Allen?
01:07:57Josh Allen or Joe Margarita?
01:07:58Absolutely.
01:07:59Oh, easily.
01:08:00Right?
01:08:00And then everything has to come together around those guys.
01:08:03I'll sign up for Lamar Jackson, you know?
01:08:04Yeah, yeah.
01:08:04Lamar Jackson – yeah, everything has to come together around those guys,
01:08:08defensively, running, the weapons.
01:08:10And then you've got to get lucky in January, too, right?
01:08:13You've got to hit the right opponents, and you've got to have some luck
01:08:16where, you know, people don't drop a ball or they don't make a mistake.
01:08:19They don't miss a field goal.
01:08:20We didn't talk about kicker, right?
01:08:23We didn't miss a field goal or something like that.
01:08:25You were right about that.
01:08:26To me, it's just about getting the right guy.
01:08:29And you don't necessarily have to have the number one pick to do it.
01:08:33It does increase your odds.
01:08:34It has to.
01:08:35But that's also – you have to trust that your front office is going to be
01:08:39able to look at – if these are five guys that are going to be first-round
01:08:42picks next year, this is the best one.
01:08:44Because remember, Patrick Mahomes wasn't the first one taken.
01:08:47Exactly.
01:08:48Right?
01:08:48Josh Allen wasn't the first one taken.
01:08:50Joe Burrow was.
01:08:50So, you've got to identify the right guy.
01:08:53Yeah.
01:08:53And look –
01:08:54Yeah, Kaz, I'll say –
01:08:55Frankie, I've got to get in here.
01:08:56So, look.
01:08:56I would also say this.
01:08:58Baker, I think, is a hell of a quarterback.
01:09:00He was the first overall pick.
01:09:02I think you are looking at it from a, I need to get my quarterback.
01:09:05But I also think you have a lot of – you've been burned a lot in terms of the
01:09:12recent history with the coaching.
01:09:13And I think that is where you're coming from with this because I don't think you
01:09:17believe in Aaron Glenn.
01:09:18I think you've said that plenty of times here.
01:09:20And that is where you get frustrated, Kaz, because you have also said how many
01:09:26times on this show – how many times, Ryan, have we seen a defensive coach or a
01:09:30coach who picks a quarterback in the first round, goes into that first year, and
01:09:35they were already on the hot seat, and now they show they can't win with that
01:09:38guy, and guess what?
01:09:39He's out.
01:09:40We just saw it across the street with Brian Dayball last year with Jackson Dart.
01:09:43So, I think that is what you get frustrated.
01:09:46It's like, I'd rather pull the Band-Aid off completely.
01:09:49Like, if we're a six-win team and Glenn has shown some improvements, but you're
01:09:54still at that, I don't know if this guy actually can take them to the playoffs and
01:10:00take them with a rookie quarterback into that next step, just rip the Band-Aid off
01:10:05and get this thing cleared out to say –
01:10:08Even if they have six wins, Frankie, I think, though, this is the part where you
01:10:11get – I think I lose you a little bit.
01:10:13It's like, you don't have to be the first overall pick.
01:10:15You have three first-round picks next year.
01:10:17Package those picks and move up for the quarterback that Mujie has to identify,
01:10:22Kaz, that that's their guy.
01:10:25Yeah, right.
01:10:26You're also assuming a few things really quick.
01:10:28You're assuming that the teams up front are going to want to trade out.
01:10:31And, Rye, if you look at this draft, they just did a mock draft, ESPN.
01:10:36You know, Darian Mensah went ninth, I think, or tenth.
01:10:40Compare that to the guys that went in the top three.
01:10:43There's a big difference.
01:10:44And, listen, that's going to change so much this year, so I'm not, like, worried
01:10:47too much about, like, a preseason mock draft, like, in college.
01:10:50It's kind of ridiculous, to be honest.
01:10:52But I'm just saying, those guys that go, like, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, you go down the list
01:10:58and you look at the draft.
01:10:59Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes.
01:11:00There's been Christian Connors.
01:11:00Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes.
01:11:02All right.
01:11:03AJ Manuals have been drafted, too, Rye.
01:11:05But, Frankie, Frankie, you're looking way too much into that you don't have
01:11:09as good enough a chance.
01:11:10There's plenty of strikeouts at the top of the draft as well.
01:11:13There are.
01:11:15It happens everywhere, man.
01:11:16Bryce Young looks terrible, and he's a number one overall pick.
01:11:20Like, there is misses all the time in the draft.
01:11:23I think, like Kaz said, though, you have to focus on Mujie and say,
01:11:27is this the guy we want to pick the quarterback going forward?
01:11:31That's going to be answered depending on how this team plays
01:11:34and if he actually brought in the right pieces to make this team better.
01:11:38I think that's where we got to kind of leave this conversation.
01:11:41We have to wait.
01:11:42Yes.
01:11:42It's a wait and see.
01:11:43That's ultimately what I've been saying on social media.
01:11:45Can we play some football this year, guys?
01:11:46But I never – but, like, people that are – people are attacking me.
01:11:51Someone put up a gif of, like, the Sopranos shooting with, like, to my video.
01:11:57I'm like, what the hell is going on here?
01:11:58Like, people got really pissed.
01:12:01I'm like, I'd just rather go, you know, 1 in 16 if it comes down to it
01:12:06than going, you know, 6 in 11.
01:12:07But I understand.
01:12:08You don't want to bring that up a week before the season.
01:12:11Everyone's getting excited for something new.
01:12:13It's not – you know.
01:12:14That's what happens when I go on Jake's show.
01:12:16You know, they cut things up.
01:12:17I told Jake, you guys cut things up out of context.
01:12:20It's not nice to me all the time.
01:12:22I'm, you know, getting attacked by 1,000 people, you know.
01:12:26It's the modern world, man.
01:12:27It's the modern world that we're in.
01:12:29Let's get into predictions, fellas, so we unwrap this episode.
01:12:32Before we get into the official win prediction, Kaz,
01:12:35I want to give up some player rapid-fire predictions.
01:12:39Can you give me, Kaz and Frankie, I'll start with Kaz.
01:12:41Who is the Jets offensive MVP this year?
01:12:45Garrett Wilson.
01:12:47Frankie?
01:12:49Garrett Wilson.
01:12:50Okay.
01:12:52Kaz, give me the defensive MVP.
01:12:56Ooh.
01:12:58Is this, like, voted on by the team, Ryan?
01:13:02Or are we talking about, like –
01:13:03Who you think is going to have the most impact?
01:13:05Yeah, the best statistical defensive player on this team.
01:13:08Best statistical.
01:13:09I'll go with Frankie's boy.
01:13:10I'll go David Bailey then.
01:13:12I do think, like, if the team's voting, it's probably DeMario
01:13:15because I think there's intangibles with DeMario, right?
01:13:17That would make him MVP.
01:13:19Okay.
01:13:19Frankie?
01:13:21Believe it or not, I'm not going to go with David Bailey.
01:13:23I'm going to go with another guy I like.
01:13:25I'm going to go with Jamie and Sherwood.
01:13:27I think Sherwood has a little nice year in front of him.
01:13:29Okay.
01:13:30A lot of tackles.
01:13:31Kaz?
01:13:32Geno Smith.
01:13:33This prop is pretty crazy, I saw.
01:13:36This is on PrizePix.
01:13:37The only place I could see where they had this.
01:13:39For season-long props, they only have him at 14.5 passing touchdowns
01:13:43and 2,600 passing yards.
01:13:46Where does this stand?
01:13:47Pound me over.
01:13:48Over on both?
01:13:50Over on both, yeah.
01:13:51Doesn't that tell you that they're saying...
01:13:53The yards, the yards especially, I think he's going to be way over the yards.
01:13:55What was the touchdowns?
01:13:5614.5?
01:13:57Yeah, 14.5.
01:13:58I think he'll be over that.
01:14:00I don't think it'll be crazy over that, but I think he'll be way over the yards.
01:14:04Doesn't that tell you something that they might think that he's not going to start
01:14:06almost all these games?
01:14:09Yeah.
01:14:10I mean, there's no way...
01:14:14It's weird.
01:14:16It's almost like they're projecting him to get hurt.
01:14:20Frankie, you got over on both?
01:14:24I'll be honest.
01:14:25I don't.
01:14:27I just...
01:14:28I don't know.
01:14:28I just...
01:14:29I have a feeling in my gut he's just not going to play the whole year.
01:14:32So I kind of see why the under...
01:14:34I did it last year.
01:14:34We did it with Justin Fields.
01:14:36There were similar props, and I went over on both, and I got burned then.
01:14:40I am not doing it.
01:14:41I'm going to go...
01:14:42I'll go over on the yards.
01:14:44I'll go under on the touchdowns.
01:14:46Okay.
01:14:47Let's go to Garrett Wilson.
01:14:50We got him at over-under 975.5 receiving yards.
01:14:54Kaz?
01:14:56Over.
01:14:57Okay.
01:14:58Frankie?
01:15:00Over.
01:15:01Okay.
01:15:01Both of you are over.
01:15:03Let's go to Brees Hall.
01:15:04He has 900, 9-0-0, and a half rushing yards.
01:15:10Kaz?
01:15:13Over.
01:15:14Frankie?
01:15:16Going to go under.
01:15:18That's not a good year for Brees Hall.
01:15:20I think Braylon will have a nice year, though.
01:15:22The rookie, Kenyon Sadiq, 449.5 receiving yards.
01:15:27Kaz?
01:15:28That's a great number.
01:15:32We got it back.
01:15:32I'm going to go under.
01:15:34I'm going to go under.
01:15:35I just don't like the injury stuff.
01:15:37Frankie?
01:15:38Same.
01:15:39I'll piggyback off Kaz there.
01:15:41All right.
01:15:41And now let's go to the other rookie, David Bailey.
01:15:44They have him, according to DraftKings, 6-0.
01:15:4620 and a half?
01:15:50That's Frankie's line.
01:15:51That's Frankie's line, yeah.
01:15:53That's 20 and a half.
01:15:55Imagine he has 20 and a half.
01:15:57No.
01:15:57That's our 1 and 16, and he has 20 and a half.
01:16:016.25 sacks.
01:16:03So, it's 6 and a half, pretty much.
01:16:04But 6.25 sacks.
01:16:06Kaz?
01:16:06One up from 5.75.
01:16:08Well, we know what Frankie's answer is.
01:16:09Yes.
01:16:10I'll go over on that.
01:16:12I think barely over.
01:16:13I think it's going to be 7 or 8 in that area.
01:16:15That's what I was thinking.
01:16:16I had him at 8 this year, sacks, for David Bailey.
01:16:19Speaking of rookies, Kaz, who will have the biggest impact on this Jets team as a rookie?
01:16:24There's a lot of them.
01:16:26Yeah, Bailey will have the biggest impact.
01:16:28I don't think.
01:16:29I wouldn't hesitate on that one.
01:16:31Frankie?
01:16:32I'll say this.
01:16:33Bailey, yes.
01:16:34But I'll go on the offensive side.
01:16:36I think eventually, as the year plays out, I think Omar Cooper Jr. will start blossoming a little bit into
01:16:44his own towards the end of the season.
01:16:45Like, I think around the bye week, a little bit after, I think you'll see some big games that we'll
01:16:49go into next year and we'll feel good about him.
01:16:51Because it takes him a little bit of time to get moving.
01:16:53Even in Indiana, it took him a little bit.
01:16:55Like, I think he'll flash a little bit towards the end of the season.
01:16:59All right, fellas, time to do the win-loss prediction.
01:17:02I'll start with Mr. Costello.
01:17:04What is your official win-loss prediction for the New York Jets in 2026?
01:17:08My official win-loss prediction is Frankie's nightmare, 6-11, Ryan.
01:17:15I just feel like that's exactly where this team is.
01:17:17They're just kind of going to be mediocre of, like, that they're – they've got a favorable schedule.
01:17:26They've got games that they should win.
01:17:28So I think they'll be able to win some games.
01:17:31But I just – I think there's going to be struggles.
01:17:33And that we didn't hit on this in the – when they position by position, I would be very worried
01:17:38about kicker if I were you, Jets fans.
01:17:40Like, that is a – that they're trying out kickers 10 days before the game, that is not a good
01:17:46place to be.
01:17:47But I'm going 6-11, Ryan.
01:17:49Justin Tucker is not going to be our starting week one kicker, right, guys?
01:17:52I don't think so.
01:17:53I mean, he lost to Groupie last year in the Colt.
01:17:56They tried out at the same time, and they picked Groupie.
01:17:59And he actually tried out for the Saints last year, and they signed Cade York.
01:18:02So that tells you where he's at kicking-wise right now.
01:18:04Remember, before the allegations, he missed eight field goals for the Ravens in 24.
01:18:08There was questions about whether they were going to bring him back anyway.
01:18:11And then there was all the allegations, and they got rid of him.
01:18:15Frankie, give me your season win-loss prediction.
01:18:181-16, right?
01:18:19That's what he's saying, right?
01:18:23You know, I'm going to go one win less than – no, I'm kidding.
01:18:26Actually, shout-outs to Kaz.
01:18:28Kaz, you were the first person to say, I do not think the Jets' starting kicker is on this roster.
01:18:33And that was even when Cade York was here.
01:18:35So that's a shout-out because I'm like, it's way too late.
01:18:39Like, one of them will be the starter.
01:18:40You called that.
01:18:41So that was a good goal.
01:18:43Yeah, should have bet on that.
01:18:45I don't know if you can bet on that stuff.
01:18:46But, yeah, I should have listened to you if I could have bet on that.
01:18:49But I'm going to go with –
01:18:55I'm going to go with Kaz, man.
01:18:57The six wins is just –
01:18:59We spoke about number six with the kicker was Doug Bryan the other day.
01:19:04Six has been, like, staring me in the face for a while now.
01:19:07I don't know, six.
01:19:08We spoke about six.
01:19:09I got death threats over six wins.
01:19:12So let's just – let's keep the six-win things going.
01:19:14Let's just – let's keep it rolling.
01:19:16Six and 11, it's destiny for us to be picking, you know, eighth in the draft.
01:19:20And, you know, the top three quarterbacks just shoot off the board.
01:19:23And then we're talking about Darian Mensah.
01:19:27Well, I infamously made a horrible prediction last year before the season.
01:19:32Ten.
01:19:32Ten wins.
01:19:33Do it again.
01:19:34No way.
01:19:35No way.
01:19:35Do it again, Rod.
01:19:36Do it again.
01:19:37No.
01:19:37What I will say is I've tried to be a more –
01:19:39Throw some stones.
01:19:39No, I've been trying to be more realist about this team.
01:19:43They slapped me in the face.
01:19:45Aaron Glenn slapped me in the face last year about how bad of a coach he was.
01:19:49I'm praying and hoping that this guy can prove himself to be the real deal.
01:19:52They gave him a load of money to prove himself.
01:19:56This is his defense, like Kaz said.
01:19:58They have imported all these pieces on defense to be his calling card.
01:20:03Show it this year.
01:20:05However, the over-under win total is five and a half.
01:20:09I've been on the six and 11 train like you guys have all offseason,
01:20:13but I can't repeat what you two both just say and go six and 11.
01:20:17I think it's going to be seven and ten.
01:20:19I will give them seven wins because I think seven and ten will be just enough
01:20:23for us to have a ton of conversations with Frankie and Kaz debating,
01:20:27keep them, don't keep them.
01:20:28He showed improvements here.
01:20:29He didn't show improvements there.
01:20:31They won the game against the Browns, but then they got blown up by the Patriots.
01:20:34We'll have all those conversations in the offseason at seven and ten.
01:20:37I think it's that perfect mark where we're all going to be like,
01:20:40ah, with Aaron Glenn and what his future is.
01:20:42But that'll be classic Jets.
01:20:44Look, we're all excited because it's the start of a new season.
01:20:48No matter how much we try to be, like, if fans think we're negative on here,
01:20:53I think we're trying to be real at the same time.
01:20:56Like, this team has given us no, like, cause for not concern.
01:21:01Like, there is still that bad taste in the mouth from last year.
01:21:04While they try to wipe the slate clean and go into this year
01:21:06and have a brand new year and prove that they're an improved team, show it.
01:21:10Go out there, beat the Titans that you should beat
01:21:13because you are a better football team than them on paper.
01:21:16Go beat them.
01:21:17Prove to us that you haven't improved from last year.
01:21:20So that's my one sentence on all this.
01:21:22Kaz, give me one sentence why Jets fans should believe
01:21:25this season is going to be different from last.
01:21:28Oh, God, right.
01:21:29You hit me with that one.
01:21:30One sentence why.
01:21:33Boy.
01:21:34So I have to go to Frankie first.
01:21:36I got to think.
01:21:36Frankie, give me one sentence
01:21:38on why this season will be different from last year.
01:21:42All right, ready?
01:21:43I'll try to try to be a little bit of an optimist here.
01:21:45So in 2022, I said one sentence.
01:21:51Don't tell me the story.
01:21:52It is one sentence.
01:21:54I'm just starting in 2022 comma.
01:21:56The Houston Texans won three games in 2023.
01:22:01The Houston Texans went 10 and seven and made the playoffs.
01:22:04That's that's it.
01:22:05So, I mean, think of what the Houston Texans went through
01:22:08from 22 to 23 and that there's your hope.
01:22:12It's happened.
01:22:13It's happened in the last couple of years.
01:22:14So there you go.
01:22:15Was that good, Ryan or Kaz?
01:22:17That was okay, right?
01:22:18I'll give you my sentence, Ryan.
01:22:19I got it.
01:22:20Gino Smith is better than Justin Fields, period.
01:22:23That's a good one.
01:22:26There it is.
