00:00to bill o'brien this morning hey bill hey greg morning guys how you doing i'm doing great yeah
00:07everything's good we're on the right track here good well ready to get going on saturday i i did
00:13want to before we talk about that and other things i did want to ask you where you stand
00:17on the current debate with regard to guys who tried to make an nfl team or even uh played for
00:25one for for a little bit uh coming back and and taking another shot at college football how do
00:32you feel about that yeah i uh i feel pretty strongly about that i think that um you know once
00:40it once a
00:40guy you know obviously graduates moves on and then he you know he gets he gets onto a 90 man
00:47nfl roster
00:49um you know he's no longer an amateur and i and i realize there's a real debate about amateurism and
00:55all that i i totally understand that but i mean you you're now a pro whether you got released or
00:59not
01:00or you've moved on and so and plus you have you know 120 guys here that have gone through
01:07you know eight months of training and put a lot into this and then all of a sudden you're gonna
01:11bring a guy back in who you know maybe he played here maybe he didn't uh and now you're
01:18going to just insert him back into the team i mean i i don't think there's i think that's just
01:22absolutely ridiculous so i i think uh we've got to try to get a hold of what's going on in
01:28college
01:29football and one way to do it is to not not uh you know not bring those guys back yeah
01:36that's great
01:37we had a we had interesting debate about it the other day with regard to lane kiffin and i was
01:43being
01:44old and sentimental about it and saying that i felt like a big part of the job when it comes
01:48to being
01:49a head coach in college football is developing young men into into uh men that are ready to face
01:57life and and all of that and wiggy was saying that he really has not encountered uh college coaches who
02:04that's their main focus i where do you how much how do you when you look at your job how
02:09much of it
02:09is that how important is that part to you well i you know and i have you know obviously i've
02:17known
02:17wigs a long time i mean i would disagree with that relative to me i'll just speak personally like i
02:22take
02:22a lot of pride uh in really trying to every single day not only teach football but try to try
02:30to teach
02:31these guys about everything from you know organizing their time how important academics are to life after
02:38football i mean we you know guys at the end of the day like there's not a lot of guys
02:43in college
02:44football right now that are going to be in the nfl i mean it's less than two percent and so
02:50like you
02:50you've got to do a great job as a college football coach this is just my opinion i've done it
02:54at penn
02:55state i did it when i was an assistant uh at several places and i've done it here at boston
03:00college
03:01win or lose i i always take a great pride in making sure that these guys get a meaningful degree
03:07but get
03:07it you know as good of an experience as they can have on and off the field as a college
03:12football
03:13player and bill that's the one thing that's very rare in my experience and you have seems like you've
03:19done a great job with a lot of these guys of being transparent and being honest with them and and
03:23i feel
03:23like even like some of this where what we talked about players coming back to um to the from nfl
03:29to
03:30college like you said you're working your ass off all offseason all training camp lifting and then all of a
03:35sudden a guy comes back in because he might have been a good player and then a coach inserts him
03:41but i i would say from my experience there excuse me a lot of coaches out there that really are
03:47focused on you know what they can get out of the player and i think you know just from where
03:52i sit
03:53it seems like you're not like that and have you experienced coaches that are like that where it's just
03:58like hey how can you help me as a player and kind of keep it moving i definitely agree with
04:05you
04:05that there's probably you know coaches out there that are really just all about the bottom line of
04:11winning i you know i was lane lane kiffin yeah i mean you know i i know lane um you
04:18know i know lane
04:19you know we both coached at alabama i've known lane for a long time i mean i knew lane when
04:23he was
04:23that southern cow and you know lane lane is a is a hell of a football coach he's a he's
04:31a great play
04:31caller um but you know lane's lane he's going to do what lane thinks is best for lsu and that
04:38you
04:38know more power to him but my my thing is that like what what wigg said is so important to
04:45me like
04:45we we look we we really we want to win at boston college like there's no doubt about it and
04:50if we
04:51don't win we we understand the the consequences of that that's the life we chose as a as a coach
04:57but
04:57at the same time you want these guys to come back 10 15 years from now that's what means a
05:02lot to me
05:02the guys i coached at penn state that stay in touch with me the guys that i when i was
05:06an assistant at
05:07georgia tech or other places maryland you know that stay in touch with me because you had an effect on
05:12their life and i believe we're having a positive effect on the on the guys here at boston college
05:17well bill as a as a guy that you know pretty well once said you're on to cincinnati uh and
05:24so getting
05:25getting ready for them to start the season this week yeah no doubt we we've uh put a lot of
05:31time
05:31into it um and our guys you know really have worked hard for this cincinnati's a good football team they
05:38they've got uh really good coaching um they have a lot of transfers you know kind of like us probably
05:44even more than us and so there's a little bit of an unknown going into the game but um you
05:50know we
05:50believe we're on the right track we've had a good week we're we're pretty healthy for this time of
05:54the year and so let's go down and and uh you know and have a hell of a game bill
06:00i know you still have
06:00a staff but a change this season you're taking over the offensive play calling this season what went
06:05into that decision and how do you think that's going to impact the team whoa whoa whoa whoa we get
06:10we
06:10we have an offensive play caller right here that you could that you could have drafted yeah oh boy
06:14yeah what about shine yeah i mean i you know the play that he you know that we talked about
06:21uh when
06:22when we were together at home um you know i i tried to put that play in but it ended
06:27up taking
06:28kind of too long to put it in so also you were late to practice that right you didn't have
06:34enough
06:34personnel i mean there were 12 guys on the field you got a penalty delay a game and 12 guys
06:42on the
06:42field but how hard is that how is it how difficult is it to do both no i i love
06:50it i i i really that's
06:52something that um you know will long left and went to the chicago bears and we have a really good
06:58offensive staff we really do we've got you know rob chudzinski and jonathan dibiaso mike hart um we've
07:05got kurt anderson now we've got joe daily we have guys that really helped me a lot and and i
07:11just
07:11really enjoy being hands-on with the offense and it just um i just really love it courtney you know
07:18i mean so i think it's been good for the team you know we got to go down and play
07:21well but uh
07:22but uh i i just i've enjoyed the last six months being in that role bill what is your perspective
07:29on the long-term success of the new world order of college football and does there need to be a
07:37commissioner like there is in the professional sports that can rein in the behavior of these
07:42individual coaches and teams because it just it seems sort of out of control right now across the
07:48landscape of college football it is and again i i have to i want to say this right off the
07:53bat because
07:55we we have we are really trying to find our niche here at boston college in this new world
08:00and i believe that we've done the right thing we're on the right path keeping the values of bc i
08:07really do
08:08i think there's there's things that we're doing father jack now leading this this uh university and
08:13you know blake james i think we're on the right track here but you're exactly right
08:18over the course of time there has to be some sort of i think it's more than one person a
08:24commission
08:24made up of uh retired coaches uh athletic directors and business people and then obviously federally
08:32i think congress needs to get involved and and and we have to we have to figure this out because
08:38it's just it's it is out of control there there's a um there's a there's a there's got you know
08:45teams
08:45that have different ways of bringing money into their program that other teams don't have there's
08:50not it's not an even playing field when it comes to the money aspect of it and so but again
08:55we've
08:56found our our niche and i believe we're on the right track here and i believe we're a better team
09:00we have
09:00to go out there and do it but uh there has to be some some sort of regulation over the
09:05next whatever it
09:06is three to five years bill you talked about taking on the responsibilities to call plays
09:12you know you've and throughout your career you've utilized the tight end a lot and i know uh chisinski
09:18kaylin chisinski was uh he had a nice little role in your offense last year got injured this season
09:23what are some of the like when you start when you start to look at some of the guys that
09:28you expect to
09:29be some impact players for your team who are some of the guys that we should be looking for
09:33saturday night especially on the offensive side of the football yeah we we uh at tight end look
09:38that injury that chud that was a tough one he he uh obviously had a really good freshman year
09:45but we have other guys one of our captains zeke moore um has had a really good off season
09:51uh we have brady cluff uh danny edgehill from zavarian um we moved bryce lewis over there a guy that
09:59was a defensive end that came to us last year as a freshman and now as a sophomore has had
10:03a really
10:04good camp at tight end so we feel good about that position i think when you look at our running
10:08backs
10:09we've got evan dickens bo bo mccormick and then uh wide receivers with jayden skeet dawson pew varie green
10:16reed swanson jackson wade we've got some guys there that can really play ned bolden so we're we're very
10:23fired up about our our uh offensive players and um they've had a good off season and you know we
10:28just
10:28need to go down there and take it one plate at a time and and put our best foot forward
10:32in the game
10:33all right bill o'brien well go get them we are we are delighted to have you back all season
10:38long
10:38and hopefully you are able to start this season the same way that unc did quite i mean quite a
10:45win
10:46for for the atar hills to start the season wouldn't you say hello brian that was a great win um
10:52you know
10:53he built bill did a great job in that game the players did i mean it was kind of a
10:57slugfest
10:59um which is probably the way he kind of liked it but uh that was a hell of a win
11:03and we're gonna try
11:04to do the same thing
11:05you
