00:00At the moment, cuts.
00:01There's some numbers that looked interesting.
00:04And I think throughout the day, and I know Tyler and Cheryl are hard at work on this
00:10as we're starting to see them trickle in.
00:13But, Clint, before today when now you're having a chance to re-sign some of the guys
00:20that you cut to the practice squad, we looked at it, and the numbers were interesting.
00:26There were some potential thoughts there.
00:28They kept 12 offensive linemen, which was the first thing that jumped off the page.
00:33You'll never see that many offensive linemen.
00:36They had only five wide receivers, Nico Hutchison and Kayshaun Boutte in the building,
00:45and Jalen Noel and Jared Wayne made it.
00:48And then four tight ends, just really two running backs that you feel comfortable
00:55that you hand the ball off.
00:56And then British Brooks also along with it with the two quarterbacks.
00:59But the offensive line, everything else was pretty normal, not real surprising there.
01:06Maybe Aiden Fisher was a bit of a surprise making it in that linebacker room, Clint.
01:12But mostly the things that jumped out was 12 offensive linemen, five wide receivers.
01:18You see teams that at least keep six, sometimes seven wide receivers, and you never see that
01:23many offensive linemen there.
01:25Those were the two big things that jumped out.
01:28And I just want to get your thoughts before we look at some of the recent things that have
01:34happened, reports that are coming up about the Texans bringing some of these guys back.
01:41But I think one of the telling things in this, when you look at the numbers and the guys
01:46they kept, Clint, is these people they felt like they may lose.
01:50These are people that they felt like they may lose and they want to continue to have in the building.
01:55And some of these guys, as we know, Clint will go up and down on the practice squad,
02:00be active, inactive on some weeks.
02:04Anything surprise you in which these are the guys they felt like they had to keep?
02:09Because if you cut some, and we'll get to it here throughout the day, you can bring some
02:14of them back.
02:16But the 53 you keep, Clint, these are guys that you feel like I don't even want to put
02:21in, you know, in the space of having to potentially lose them because teams can pick them up.
02:27Yeah, look, I think there's probably five guys at the bottom of the 53 that are five spots
02:33where you go, okay, which guy can we, do we know we'll clear, or do we feel better about
02:38clearing waivers, which guy's probably not going to clear waivers, and you put the one,
02:44keep the ones on the 53 that you think would, other teams would pick up, right?
02:49I mean, ultimately, that's where you're at.
02:51I'll give you a perfect example.
02:52Sebastian Harsh, edge rusher, had a really good game.
02:56They moved him inside, played a little inside late in the fourth quarter of the last
02:59preseason game, and I'm not saying that that game was meant, you know, there was an appeal
03:06there, but clearly they thought that was the guy that if they put him on the streets, he
03:10would get picked up, so they choose to keep him.
03:13You know, that's just an example, but back to your point, I think the bigger play here was
03:19the 12 offensive linemen and what that ripple effect does to the rest of the roster.
03:23You mentioned the two obvious spots, wide receiver and running back, where you keep one fewer
03:29than many folks thought that you would keep just on that active roster, and I think that's
03:34in large part due to the fact that you have 12 offensive linemen on the roster.
03:41The other thing there offensively about those 12 offensive linemen and four tight ends is,
03:46well, it ought to be pretty obvious to folks what, you know, what the Texans want to do.
03:52They want to make sure that they don't have offensive line problems.
03:55They want to make sure that they're not one offensive line injury away from having a big
03:59hole in the offense.
04:00They want to make sure they have enough tight ends to where that position can sustain an injury
04:05or even two, and you're still pretty solid at that spot as it pertains to running the
04:09football, so I think it's, you can tell O-line, tight end, you know, they're damn sure going
04:17to get those two spots right.
04:18And that they felt like those offensive linemen and tight end were so valuable that they didn't
04:25even want to put him out, put those 12, especially the linemen, those 12 guys out there for a chance
04:31to lose them.
04:31Yeah.
04:32Like that, like that is, like, I think they knew they would get some of these guys back,
04:36which I think they will, but they said, and some of these are surprising, like, you know,
04:44Jake Andrews, they felt like we, you know, we don't want to cut him because he's somebody
04:49that may get picked up, but they probably do, and they value him having him.
04:53Wyatt Teller, the money probably was a big, a big call there, but like the Sam Hagen,
04:59the undrafted free agent, right, they felt like they didn't want to take a chance of
05:05putting him out there.
05:05They trade for a tackle again from Dallas, so, you know, interesting that they felt that
05:11those guys were so critical that they didn't even want to put him out there for a chance
05:16to lose them.
05:17Well, they felt that was that.
05:19The Jake Andrews piece, now look, anything can happen, I guess, you know, as they maneuver
05:24here with the roster over, hell, really, for the foreseeable future, anything can happen.
05:28But the Jake Andrews piece is interesting only because it's one of two things, right?
05:36Either they're not confident and comfortable with Keelan Rutledge having to be moved to center
05:46with the communication processing piece yet, so you keep another center, Evan Brown, Jake
05:53Andrews.
05:54That way, you've got that communication piece right there with the quarterback figured out.
05:59Now, was that because Keelan Rutledge wasn't real comfortable with the physical and mental
06:06piece of playing center, which he never had?
06:08Or was, and by the way, I don't care what the answer to this either or is, I love the
06:13decision
06:14by the Texans is where I'm going with it, right?
06:16Whether it was because he couldn't, he wasn't ready for that center position yet, or if it
06:21were the organization saying, you know what, we got a rookie that we want to plug in at
06:26left tackle and we want him to focus, I'm sorry, left guard, and we want him to just focus
06:31on being a guard and being a dog, more importantly, and being the physical presence that we want
06:37him to be.
06:37And we don't want an Evan Brown hamstring tweak to all of a sudden force him to move
06:44but center, and now all of a sudden he's moving positions as a rookie for the first time in
06:48the first month of the season.
06:49There's some stability there.
06:51This organization has been an organization that has, I believe, to a fault, moved guys
06:57around.
06:57And to that point even more, they trade Jarrett Patterson, which was kind of a surprise, to
07:04make sure they kept a guy that they feel confident, maybe they didn't feel confident
07:08of saying, we'll keep Rutledge at guard to move Jarrett Patterson in at center if something
07:13like that happens.
07:14Right, right.
07:15And they would bring it on Andrews.
07:16To your point, you moved Jarrett Patterson, so now if you cut or trade Andrews, then your
07:22only option beyond Evan Brown at center is Keelan Rutledge.
07:26Now you're moving this rookie around instead of just letting him play one position and, I mean,
07:31again, be the dog that you drafted him to be.
07:35So whether, again, I don't care what the answer is.
07:38It's irrelevant.
07:39I don't, whether it's because he wasn't, they felt like he wasn't ready to be a center,
07:44so they're going to have to get three deep before he becomes a center, or it's because
07:49the organization is protecting him and saying, boom, you're a left guard, my man.
07:53We'll revisit this center thing in the offseason.
07:55We'll revisit it if it's an emergency, you know, I mean, just an emergency situation
08:00where we get a couple of guys hurt, but we want you to play guard and be comfortable and
08:05get used to playing at the NFL level.
08:07Either way it goes, I absolutely love that decision by the Texans.
08:11Now, I didn't think that's where they would land.
08:13I didn't think they would trade Jarrett Patterson and keep Blake Andrews, but I love where they
08:19landed as it pertains to your first over, or your number one, your first round draft pick
08:24this, this, this, this past draft.
08:27All right.
08:28That was before we started to get some of the news coming in with the, the 53 man roster
08:35they initially put out, but we would understand that they're probably going to see if they
08:40could run and get some of these guys through so they can get them to the practice squad.
08:44We're starting to see that come down.
08:46Clinton, Tyler and Tyler, if you see more Cheryl, you see more.
08:49If you see more Cheryl's husband, if you see more jump in and let me know.
08:54Uh, but the latest that I have right now, Clint, uh, they have signed undrafted rookie defensive
09:00lineman, Dominic Bailey to the practice squad.
09:03They've been able to re-sign Gerard Jordan.
09:06That was a one that was a bit surprising.
