Iceland: Neck and neck referendum rejects EU membership talks

Iceland's relationship with Brussels will not fundamentally change. The country already participates in the European Economic Area and the passport-free Schengen zone, and both arrangements stay intact.

00:00Iceland's No Camp has narrowly won a referendum on the country's suspended European Union
00:06membership negotiations.
00:09According to official figures, some 52.8% of the 225,031 votes cast had rejected the
00:17government's proposal, while 47.2% had said yes.
00:22Voter turnout stood at 82.5%, final results showed.
00:27The No Outcome will shelve the EU debate in Icelandic politics for at least two more years.
00:33After casting her ballot in the capital on Saturday, Prime Minister Kristian Frustadotir
00:39told reporters the referendum campaign has failed debate about Iceland's place in the
00:45world.
00:46Saturday's vote came in the shadow of US President Donald Trump's threat to control nearby Greenland.
00:52However, the debate in the island nation of almost 400,000 people centred mostly on its
00:59economic concerns with its fishing industry rather than security concerns.
01:04Analysts say with fish and marine industries accounting for almost 40% of exports, many
01:10know voters fear they would cede some control of their lucrative fishing grounds under the
01:16EU's common fisheries policy.
01:19Despite the outcome, Iceland's relationship with Brussels won't change.

01:28zone.
