Reform UK leader Nigel Farage says that foreign aid and benefits should be cut, rather than adjusting the pensions triple lock, which Andy Burnham has said he would do from 2030 to fund care reforms. Farage also argues a national care service like the one proposed by Burnham would go over budget. Report by Keechl. 00:00The triple lock is an absolutely tiny part of the 1.4 trillion that the UK government spends every year.
00:07Our pensioners, if you compare them to other countries, are roughly in the middle, which is about where they should
00:12stay.
00:13We don't think that future pensions should be cut.
00:16We'd much rather cut net zero funding, the foreign aid budget and benefits that go to foreign born people.
00:23Our choices are very, very clear. And frankly, frankly, the thought that cutting pensions would leave enough money free for
00:33a national care service.
00:35Frankly, those sums don't add up or make sense at all.
00:38But more broadly on the Prime Minister's plan for a national care service, I mean, people are having to spend
00:42their life savings on paying for care.
00:44So is this a fairer system?
00:47There have been so many systems over the years proposed for how we deal with the elderly care crisis.
00:52The Dilknot Report, which was now over a decade ago, was much debated.
00:57Theresa May, as Prime Minister, had a go at finding a solution.
01:00But the idea of a national care service run by this government, I think, would run way over budget.
01:08And in the end, cost every taxpayer a lot more money.
