00:00Why is the Vatican inside Italy?
00:01Actually, the Vatican used to be a much bigger country even just a few hundred years ago.
00:05But in the 19th century, because of the Italian Unification Movement, it lost everything.
00:09So for about 60 years, the Holy See was left without any territory.
00:12But in 1929, everything changed when Mussolini met with the Pope.
00:15Mussolini recognized the Pope's full sovereignty over a limited area around Vatican Hill,
00:19and in return, the Holy See signed a treaty acknowledging the Kingdom of Italy.
00:22This was the Lateran Treaty in 1929, and that's why things have continued this way until now.
00:27That's how the Vatican became a small country inside Rome.
