00:1156-year-old Mohammed Anim Atam was sentenced by Magistrate A. Sharmini on Friday after admitting to deliberately uttering words
00:20insulting Islam with intent to wound another person's religious feelings.
00:24The offence took place while he was travelling from Jalan Tun Razak to Jalan Meldrum on July 30th at around
00:315pm.
00:32The charge was framed under section 298 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum penalty of one year's jail,
00:39a fine or both.
00:40The case stemmed from a video that went viral on social media in which a man could be heard insulting
00:46Islam while riding in an e-hailing vehicle.
00:48He was arrested on August 18th by the Criminal Investigation Division of Johor Bahru South District Police with assistance from
00:57Singapore Police.
00:58A mobile phone was seized to assist investigations.
01:01Deputy Public Prosecutor Ezlan Azar sought an appropriate sentence given that the case had gone viral on social media and
01:09involved 3R issues.
01:10However, Mohammed Anim, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lighter sentence, citing high blood pressure and ongoing divorce proceedings requiring
01:20his appearance at the Sharia court in Singapore.
01:23He has since begun serving his sentence.
