Ukraine is reeling after Russia launched a massive nine-hour aerial assault on Kyiv, with 168 drones and dozens of missiles used in one of the heaviest attacks on the Ukrainian capital.

The Russian barrage reportedly included ballistic, cruise and hypersonic weapons, including Kinzhal, Zircon, Iskander, Kalibr, Kh-101 and North Korean KN-23 missiles. At least 16 people were killed and dozens injured, while residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were damaged across Kyiv.

Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted a large majority of the drones, but ballistic and hypersonic missiles proved far harder to stop, highlighting Kyiv’s continuing shortage of advanced missile interceptors.

The attack also triggered airspace concerns in neighboring Romania and Moldova, while Poland carried out precautionary military aviation operations.

Watch the full report for the latest developments from the Russia-Ukraine war, Kyiv missile attack, Russian drone strikes and Ukraine’s air-defense crisis.

00:27Keeve has suffered
00:28one of the heaviest Russian air attacks of the war, with a massive overnight barrage
00:34lasting roughly nine hours and leaving at least 16 people dead.
00:39The assault began around midnight on August 19th and continued into the morning of August
00:4520th, with additional drone threats reported later in the day.
00:50Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched dozens of missiles alongside 168 drones in
00:57the massive combined attack.
00:59The barrage included ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as high-speed weapons, such
01:04as Kinjal and Zircon hypersonic missiles.
01:08Russian forces also reportedly used Iskander missiles, North Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles,
01:16Caliber cruise missiles, X-101 and X-59 missiles, along with other weapons.
01:23Ukraine's air defenses managed to intercept or neutralize a large majority of the drones.
01:29Officials said roughly 145 of the 168 drones were shot down or otherwise neutralized.
01:37Most of the slower cruise missiles were also intercepted.
01:41But the picture was very different when it came to ballistic and hypersonic weapons.
01:46Ukraine's air defenses were unable to intercept or intercepted very few of these high-speed
01:52missiles, highlighting Kyiv's shortage of advanced ballistic missile interceptors.
01:58The attacks struck multiple locations across Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine.
02:03In the capital, major damage was reported in the Solomiansky, Sviatoshinsky and Darnitsky districts.
02:10The upper floors of a nine-story residential building in Solomiansky were destroyed, with
02:17fires breaking out across several floors.
02:20Rescue workers searched damaged buildings for survivors, while people were reportedly trapped
02:25in buildings and even inside a school shelter.
02:29Around 30 residential buildings were damaged.
02:32Civilian infrastructure was also affected, including a school, medical facilities, a kindergarten, warehouses,
02:39and industrial areas.
02:41Around 38,000 people, including over 2,000 children, reportedly sought shelter in Kyiv's
02:48subway stations during the attack.
02:51The attacks also disrupted electricity supplies.
02:54Utility company DTEC said around 90,000 households temporarily lost power, although supplies were later
03:02restored to many areas.
03:03The human toll continued to rise as rescue operations progressed, with at least 16 people reported
03:11killed and dozens more injured.
03:13Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack massive and deliberate, while again
03:20highlighting Ukraine's shortage of air defense interceptors.
03:23He specifically pointed to Patriot Systems, which are among Ukraine's key defenses against
03:29ballistic missiles.
03:31Zelensky argued that Ukraine needs a steady supply of interceptors to protect its cities,
03:36and said delays in deliveries are costing lives.
03:40The attack also had consequences beyond Ukraine.
03:43A Russian drone entered Romanian airspace and crashed in Tulcha County, prompting NATO aircraft
03:50to scramble.
03:50Moldova also reported a drone falling on its territory, while Poland launched preventive
03:57military aviation operations to protect its airspace.
04:01Russia says its strikes targeted military industrial facilities, ammunition storage, and logistics
04:07infrastructure.
04:08Ukraine and Western observers, however, have emphasized the extensive civilian damage and
04:14casualties.
04:14As rescue and recovery operations continue, the attack has once again exposed Ukraine's
04:21growing vulnerability to large-scale missile and drone barrages, and the critical importance
04:27of replenishing its air defense stocks.
