स्वतंत्रता दिवस के मौके पर कांग्रेस मुख्यालय में आयोजित झंडोत्तोलन कार्यक्रम के दौरान वंदे मातरम के गायन को लेकर राजनीतिक विवाद खड़ा हो गया। सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल वीडियो में सोनिया गांधी के बातचीत करने और इशारा करने को लेकर भाजपा ने उन पर राष्ट्रगीत के अपमान का आरोप लगाया। विवाद बढ़ने के बाद कांग्रेस ने सफाई देते हुए आरोपों को खारिज किया। पार्टी के अनुसार, सोनिया गांधी का इशारा वंदे मातरम से संबंधित नहीं था। कांग्रेस ने बताया कि पार्टी अध्यक्ष मल्लिकार्जुन खरगे काफी देर से खड़े थे और उनकी उम्र को देखते हुए सोनिया गांधी उनके लिए कुर्सी की व्यवस्था सुनिश्चित कर रही थीं। पार्टी ने दावा किया कि इसी दौरान वंदे मातरम का गायन शुरू हुआ और सोनिया गांधी स्वयं राष्ट्रगीत गा रही थीं। कांग्रेस ने स्पष्ट किया कि उनका उद्देश्य केवल कार्यक्रम की व्यवस्था संभालना था। समारोह में वंदे मातरम का पूर्ण संस्करण भी गाया गया।
