Australia is seeing national musical tours collapse mid-run, under the weight of soaring travel costs and a "cautious consumer environment". But Brisbane's independent theatre scene says the show must go on. Resilient independent theatre companies are using every available means to find ways to thrive in the local market.

00:15Local independent theatre companies say the appetite for musical theatre is enduring.
00:21Even so, their productions are not immune to economic pressure.
00:25We're having to make cuts left, right and centre to make this work.
00:28Millennial Productions survives by being resourceful, rehearsing across multiple venues,
00:34recycling sets and foregoing printed programs to stay on budget.
00:39It's about $25,000 which is a very low and conservative budget
00:43but that in the past has also gone up to about $80,000 as well.
00:49A Night at the Musicals runs theatre concerts and industry mic nights.
00:54Keeping ticket prices low is a constant battle.
00:57You can do anything with time, energy and passion.
01:01If we don't raise the ticket prices but the artists are getting paid more

01:09The Queensland Government says it's committed to investing in independent arts
01:13to grow the state's experience economy
01:15but Brisbane's local theatre companies warn that without greater support
01:18the show may be over.
01:20At this independent level, the risk is you don't see it at all.
