Zambia's opposition leader expresses 'grave concern' as vote count suspended

Just hours after Zambia’s electoral commission suspended vote counting nationwide, opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile raised “grave concern,” calling for full transparency amid reports of violence.

00:00Just hours after Zambia's Electoral Commission suspended vote counting nationwide,
00:05opposition presidential candidate Brian Mamdoubil raised grave concern,
00:10calling for full transparency amid reports of violence.
00:14According to the results received and compiled through our Parallel Voter Tabulation, PVT,
00:22based on information transmitted to us from polling stations and totalling centres across the country,
00:29our tabulation indicates that we have won this election.
00:33We have won this election both at presidential level and majority seats in Parliament.
00:39We therefore view the continued delay in the transparent announcement
00:44and verification of presidential results with grave concern.
00:49Zambians went to the polls Thursday amid economic hardship,
00:53with President Hakkainde Hichelema seeking another term against opposition candidate Brian Mamdoubil.
00:59a former government minister.
01:02The pattern of reports reaching us raises legitimate fears that this delay could create an opportunity
01:09for interference with or manipulation of the results.
01:15We call for the immediate publication of the results in accordance with the law
01:20and for all stakeholders to be given access to the relevant electoral records
01:25so that the will of the Zambian people can be independently verified.
01:31Some 8.7 million voters were registered while Zambia expanded Parliament from 156 to 226 seats.
