Willard and Dibs ask and attempt to answer the following question: who would you rather have Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan or just Josh Allen?
Transcript
00:00I'm very curious to know how you would answer this,
00:03and we extend this to you, the audience, 888-957-9570.
00:08I don't want to do the whole, like, you know,
00:12would you take this quarterback over Brock?
00:15Would you take that quarterback over Brock?
00:18Kyle Shanahan, I think with what's happened to him
00:21over the last handful of weeks,
00:24it's brought more to the forefront of our minds
00:26how important he is to this team and this offense.
00:30So let me ask it to you this way.
00:33Would you rather, if you're a football team,
00:35would you rather have the combination of Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan
00:40or would you rather just have Josh Allen?
00:44Ooh, that's a good question.
00:47That's a good question.
00:48How would you answer it?
00:49I'm going to have to think about that
00:52and give it to you on the other side.
00:54Of what?
00:55Uh, the other side of the break, no?
00:58The break's coming in, like, 12 minutes.
01:01Then I need to think about it for 12 minutes.
01:02Actually, more like 14 minutes.
01:04I wasn't sure if this was going to be the shorty, but yeah.
01:07I got your breaks.
01:09Don't you worry.
01:09I got the way to do them over.
01:10I got the breaks.
01:11I mean, you've been known to run through them on occasion,
01:12but you're usually pretty diligent.
01:15I'm not going to just throw a question at you.
01:17Shanahan and Purdy or Allen and, like,
01:19and what, he has no coordinator?
01:21That was amazing.
01:22He has to coordinate on his own.
01:23I love that he's trying to turn that into a tease.
01:25That was incredible.
01:26I thought that that would be coming up.
01:28Yeah.
01:28I mean, it was great.
01:29No, it was good.
01:29It was a bit of an abrupt pivot from, uh...
01:31Oh, that's what you're thinking, Div.
01:32From, you know, Mike Kruko.
01:33All of a sudden, now we're talking about, uh...
01:35Yeah, well, I mean, JP's coming up.
01:37John Miller's coming up.
01:38Yeah, there's going to be...
01:39We're squeezing in.
01:40I like it.
01:40Yeah, well, you know...
01:41I like it.
01:42So, it's Josh Allen and whom?
01:44Like, the...
01:45Doesn't matter.
01:45Like, the replacement level?
01:47Doesn't matter.
01:47Yeah.
01:47I mean, it kind of does matter.
01:49Why?
01:50Because...
01:50Fine, make it Sean McDermott.
01:51That's who we've known to be working with Josh Allen before.
01:54Well, I don't think that he was the offensive coordinator, but, I mean...
01:56No, but he's the head coach.
01:57Right.
01:58I guess that it becomes more of a nuanced part of it, but if I'm going to get, like, the
02:0216th best replacement level offensive play caller coordinator, then give me Josh Allen.
02:08Give me Josh Allen, as opposed to the tandem.
02:11Interesting.
02:11That's not what I thought you'd say.
02:13Well, I'm just, you know, I'm not just trying to pander to the president of
02:17Brockistan, and a guy who is, you know...
02:19I don't need your support.
02:21I'm not...
02:21I got plenty of...
02:22I'm not here to give you the support, and...
02:24And I'm not even actually...
02:25And I'm not here to pander.
02:26Well, but that's not...
02:28Like, it's a fair question.
02:29It's a fair question.
02:30I think it's an interesting question, and that's why I said earlier, like, ooh, it's
02:33a question.
02:34I've never been asked it this way before.
02:35So, answering...
02:36Not to Charles Davis.
02:37Yeah, but answering it the other way, I don't think qualifies as pandering.
02:41I don't think it does either, but it just becomes, to me, a part of a bigger
02:46question about, like, tandems.
02:48Brock Purdy, if he was in, I don't know, Miami, for example, which Miami is an
02:54unmitigated mess, in my opinion.
02:55They're terrible.
02:56They might be the worst team in football this year.
02:58If Brock Purdy is there, well, he's probably not going to be as good as he is in
03:02San Francisco with Kyle Shanahan.
03:04So, Josh Allen in Buffalo with a new coordinator and a new system?
03:08I don't know.
03:09We're going to have to find out, but we do know what his raw ability is, so I'll take
03:13the raw ability.
03:13Okay, that's fine.
03:14I mean, first of all, one of your other comments, if you think Miami is the worst
03:19team in football, you clearly have not been on social media that much this week to see
03:25the montage of what has gone on at Cardinals camp.
03:28If you had seen it, you would never think that any team in the history of the NFL is
03:33as bad as the Cardinals look this year.
03:36You should go search it out, dude.
03:38It is very entertaining.
03:40Oh, my God.
03:44Do you want to talk about a team that doesn't even know how to conduct a practice?
03:49And just from me to you, from me to y'all, okay?
03:54If you're going to have a fantasy draft over the next four weeks, go ahead and don't take
03:59Marvin Harrison in any round, ever.
04:03How many Dolphins versus Cardinals will get drafted?
04:06Like, which team gets more guys drafted?
04:08More fantasy guys?
04:09Yes, correct.
04:10Well, the best one...
04:11Okay.
04:12A-Chan is...
04:13That's an elite running back.
04:15Okay.
04:16Right?
04:16That's an elite fantasy running back.
04:18He's elite if you have an offensive line, which theirs is not very good, but he'll still get
04:23taken.
04:23Yeah, he's been elite.
04:24It's the same offensive line he's been using, and he's running all over everybody for his
04:30first few years.
04:31The Cardinals drafted Love, so they drafted a very early, the first running back in the
04:37draft, but I don't know exactly...
04:41You know, they also signed Algier away from Atlanta.
04:46He thought he was going to get the game games.
04:48Connor is coming back.
04:50I'd avoid the hell out of the backfield.
04:51I don't know who's getting the carries.
04:54Who's the quarterback?
04:55Who are the receivers?
04:57You're talking about Miami, right?
04:59No, I'm talking about the Cardinals.
05:00Like, in Miami, Malik Willis is the quarterback.
05:03Okay.
05:03Who are the receivers?
05:04I would take him over the Cardinals quarterback.
05:07Jacoby Bursette?
05:08Yeah.
05:10Michael Wilson's an interesting receiver with the Cardinals.
05:13Yep.
05:13He had a big year last year on my squad.
05:15Okay.
05:15So I like him.
05:16Have you taken Tutu Atwell or Jalen Tolbert, Malik Washington?
05:21Like, these are the Miami receivers.
05:22Probably not.
05:24Maybe we can get another side bet, because I would bet that the Dolphins have, and it's
05:29tough because the Cardinals have...
05:30Yeah, they're the worst division.
05:32Well, the Cardinals have the AFC West four games, and then six games against the Niners,
05:37Rams, and Seahawks.
05:38That could be a clean 0-10 right there for Arizona.
05:41Absolutely it could.
05:42Absolutely it could.
05:43All right.
05:43Before we go back to the phones, it will surprise no one that if I were going to answer that
05:48question, I would take Kyle and Brock.
05:51But it doesn't really matter.
05:52To me, the conversation doesn't lie in the answer.
05:56It sort of lies in the details in terms of why you would pick that player.
06:01The resume, I would argue, there's no doubt that the combo of Shanahan and Purdy has had
06:07more success than Josh Allen.
06:10Agree?
06:11I think they've had a...
06:12Maybe not as many years as Josh Allen, but they've been deeper in the playoffs.
06:18Yeah, certainly.
06:18I mean, Josh Allen has never been to a Super Bowl, even in the playoffs.
06:24Like, last year, man, that thing was sitting there for Josh Allen, and it didn't happen.
06:30I'm not putting that solely on Josh.
06:33Here's, I guess, one thing that I am getting at.
06:36I think Josh Allen is most people's answer right now for best player in the league.
06:43But how much of that is because of fantasy football?
06:50Like, you want a percentage?
06:51Was that an actual question?
06:52I mean, you can answer it however the hell you want.
06:55Well, I think everything is about fantasy football and also draft position.
06:59So Brock Purdy doesn't get the love that he deserves because he was Mr. Irrelevant.
07:04And fantasy-wise, he's never really a top-10 quarterback.
07:08They don't throw for big yardage.
07:10They don't throw a lot of touchdowns.
07:11Their wide receivers don't catch a lot of passes.
07:13So if you're a fantasy football person and that's how you judge actual football,
07:18well, Brock Purdy falls short of that, and Josh Allen doesn't
07:21because every time you get inside the five-yard line,
07:24he's going to score you a rushing touchdown.
07:26Right, which is great.
07:27But, like, I just, there's something that's, ugh, something missing there
07:34as far as the revolution of his play, like, falling over into the cup.
07:38For a lot of people, they feel the same way about Shanahan.
07:40It's the everything-but sort of a thing, right?
07:43Like, he's done everything, but he hasn't won the ring.
07:46Josh Allen is just, he's joy on a TV.
07:51He is a red zone monster.
07:53He wins you your league.
07:56But he doesn't win his league.
07:58And that's kind of what I'm getting at.
08:01I do think there's an inflation sensation, if you will,
08:06if that's even allowed for the guy who I just said,
08:08I think he's the best player in the league.
08:12But what's fascinating is, is if you wanted to dive into the metrics,
08:16you know how people are like, oh, Brock Purdy,
08:17oh, you just toss the ball out to McCaffrey,
08:19and McCaffrey just heads down the field, and he gets all the stats.
08:22Well, Brock Purdy is always one of the leaders in air yards,
08:27and Josh Allen is always one of the last.
08:29He actually is the one throwing the ball behind the line of scrimmage,
08:33not Brock Purdy.
08:34And he runs more.
08:35His passing yards are not, it's not Marino-esque.
08:39It's not Breeze-esque.
08:40But Brock Purdy, you could argue,
08:42has had better targets than Josh Allen has had
08:45throughout the majority of his career.
08:47I'll buy that.
08:48I mean, Josh Allen tends to throw to a bunch of guys
08:51who are No. 3 receivers.
08:52That goes year to year.
08:53I mean, he's had Stephon Diggs the last few,
08:55or had Stephon Diggs when Diggs was a true one.
08:59He had him.
09:00He's got DJ Moore this year.
09:02He's on the bills now.
09:04Right, and we'll see what that actually portends to.
09:06But to your point, last year he threw for 3,668 yards.
09:10He played in all the games.
09:11Didn't even get to 4,000 yards.
09:13He averaged 216 a game.
09:15And that's not a guy who's out there lighting you up
09:17for, you know, 275 or 300.
09:19Right.
09:19But they're efficient, and they win.
09:21And you look at his win total,
09:23and it's 10, 13, 11, 13, 11, 13, 11, 13, 12.
09:27Yeah, he's a wonderful player.
09:28All they do is win games,
09:29but then in the playoffs, the way they go about it
09:31does not always lead to them winning games.
09:34There you go.
09:34Which, for most athletes, in most sports,
09:38that becomes a huge talking point.
09:41I don't think Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson
09:43are all that different.
09:44I think their offenses are really good.
09:46I think they win almost all the time.
09:48I think they're wonderful fantasy football players,
09:50and something goes wrong in the playoffs.
09:53But it gets hung around Lamar.
09:56But not Josh.
09:58Lamar's the one who can't win in the playoffs.
10:00Well, I mean, Josh wins in the playoffs.
10:02I don't know what Lamar's record is,
10:03but looking at Josh, he's 8-7,
10:05and they make the playoffs almost every year.
10:07Of course.
10:08He's great.
10:09I mean, he's been seven times,
10:10and they're 8-7,
10:12which means seven times you've been there
10:14and you've lost before you actually won the Super Bowl,
10:17and they haven't even been to a Super Bowl.
10:18Let's go out to Phil Moe, Mike.
10:20Phil Moe, thank you for the call.
10:21What's going on?
10:25None.
10:25Y'all got a great topic, I think.
10:29And then shout out to Kuko.
10:32You know, he's a legend.
10:35But this sprung my ears because, I mean, my theory is,
10:41I think two heads is better than one,
10:43but it depends on – and Biz has a very great point.
10:47The coordinator really matters because in some coaches,
10:52like Brady and Belichick, Belichick was more of a –
10:59but Tom Brady, if you tripped on how he played,
11:01he played like a West Coast offense,
11:03like a new version of a West Coast offense,
11:05and that's what brings me to, like, Bill Walsh and George Seepert.
11:08If your coordinators are not, like, privy to the other side of the ball,
11:15you can have a Josh Allen no matter how great he is, right?
11:18And, you know, Josh Allen and Sean McDermott's situation.
11:24If you look at the Chiefs, for example,
11:27you got a whole czar on two sides of the ball.
11:31So you got, you know, you got a czar in Andy Reid,
11:38a czar in Spagnolia on two sides of the ball,
11:41and it kind of works.
11:43So it does depend on the situation.
11:46I would always take two offensive minds over the one
11:50because you got one looking from above.
11:52You got a macro and a micro to try to decipher
11:57what that defensive coordinator is doing.
11:59So it really matters.
12:01It kind of does matter on the psychology.
12:04I don't mean to get too in the woods,
12:07but it kind of does matter on the psychology of the head coach.
12:11If they're willing to be open to some new,
12:14like Bill Parcells and Phil Sibbs.
12:17Bill Parcells was more of like a commander, leader, general.
12:20He had Bill Belichick on one side.
12:23I forgot who the offensive coordinator was.
12:25I think McBride.
12:26I think it was McBride.
12:28But he had czars on those ends,
12:32and he could kind of look for me from afar.
12:35So the question is great, but it's going to get complex.
12:39Always.
12:40And Phil, more, thanks.
12:41I mean, if I threw out to you,
12:44like, which is more believable to end up in the Super Bowl this year,
12:48Bills or Niners?
12:49I would say Bills.
12:51Okay.
12:51More likely.
12:52I mean.
12:53They have a clearer path, I think.
12:55Like, the Niners,
12:56if you look at them as the third best team in the West,
12:59and they might be second,
13:00I don't think that you could think that they're first.
13:02You're allowed to.
13:03No, I don't.
13:04I mean, I think it's the Rams,
13:05and then it's, you know,
13:06Seattle and the Niners kind of in that 2-3,
13:08the 3-2,
13:09and then Arizona,
13:10as you mentioned,
13:11they might be the worst team in football.
13:12I think Miami will be worse.
13:13But to that point,
13:14if you look at the Bills,
13:16you've got the Jets twice,
13:17which the Jets are not going to be a playoff team.
13:20I pray that they're better,
13:21because my friend is on the staff.
13:23I was going to say,
13:23I don't want them to lose their job.
13:25Why do you think the Dolphins are even going to be better
13:26than their other bad team in that division?
13:28They're not going to be.
13:29The Dolphins are going to be the worst team in the AFC,
13:31if not football.
13:32Okay.
13:32That's my point about the Bills.
13:34Like, the Bills,
13:34you're going to beat the Jets and the Dolphins twice apiece,
13:37and you probably split with New England,
13:39so you're 5-1 right there.
13:40I don't know who else they have,
13:42as far as their schedule goes,
13:43but go ahead and give Buffalo 11 or 12 wins right now.
13:47That's what they do.
13:48I take the under on five division wins for the Bills.
13:52Absolutely.
13:53Pizza bet if you want.
13:55Don't bet if you want.
13:56You're going to go under five out of six.
13:58You just said you're going to go five and one,
14:00so I'm challenging the statement.
14:01I'll take the under on.
14:02The spread would not be at five or even four and a half.
14:06Sure it would be.
14:07I can find that for you.
14:08Yeah, go ahead.
14:09I will.
14:09Okay.
14:10I'm not laying those odds.
14:11That would be a stupid bet.
14:12Then don't make the statement.
14:13I can make the statement and not make the bet.
14:15It's a radio show.
14:16I'm paid to make statements and not bets.
14:18You get that, right?
14:19I get that,
14:20but you also understand that when you make a statement,
14:22you should believe it.
14:24I do believe it.
14:25Okay, then believe it.
14:26I believe it,
14:27but it doesn't mean I have to make a bet on everything I believe in.
14:29Then you just say no thanks.
14:31I just said that.
14:32I'm not making that bet.
14:33No, you didn't really say no thanks.
14:34I don't have to say no thanks and I don't have to show you my manners.
14:38You didn't offer me something to eat.
14:40You made a statement.
14:41I challenged it.
14:42And I said no.
14:43I'm not taking that bet.
14:44Oh.
14:45It was simple.
14:45Calm yourself down.
14:46And direct.
14:47All right.
14:47Don't tell me to calm myself down.
14:49I'm calm.
14:49Calm down.
14:50We're brought to you by Fremont.
14:52Calm down.
14:52Calm down.
