Willard and Dibs react to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan admitting blame for the car accident in which he was seriously injured in two weeks ago. Does this change how you feel about the delay in the reporting of this story?
Transcript
00:00Why is there this thought process that for sure something nefarious took place here?
00:06We got to dive into black boxes.
00:08If two people get in an accident and they step out of the car and or if they have to
00:13go to the hospital and when they can talk to officers, everybody tells the exact same story.
00:18That's it.
00:19Nobody, nobody starts flying around going, this isn't a TV show on TNT.
00:24And now we got to get a black box.
00:26And oh, my God, it's a leap for me to say that the two people are telling the exact same
00:31story.
00:32You have no reason to think otherwise.
00:33You have no reason to think that that's the case.
00:36Sure I do.
00:36I have what's happened in life.
00:38Right.
00:38Here's what's happened.
00:40Here's what's happened.
00:40And there was misinformation and the guy immediately stepped out to say that's misinformation.
00:45It's on me.
00:46Right.
00:47Stand up move by him today.
00:48No.
00:49Absolutely a stand up move.
00:50I'll give you that.
00:51But but at the same time, like he comes out and he finds out that the report has her as
00:56the guilty party.
00:57And so, yeah, he steps up and says, no, it was me.
01:00And we're now two weeks removed from the accident.
01:02It's just to me, there are still blank spaces in what happened investigation wise.
01:08And the initial report from Palo Alto PD, which was, yeah, this happened and we're done here.
01:15No more info.
01:16And we're on to Cincinnati.
01:17I mean, that's how it took place.
01:20That's how it went down.
01:21That's exactly how it went down.
01:22I mean, listen, you're you're right on this end.
01:25And so am I.
01:26Neither one of us are going to get to some sort of critical end here.
01:31You can't tell me I'm wrong and I can't tell you you're wrong.
01:34Well, not yet.
01:35I'm fast.
01:35I don't think you're going to know.
01:37This is just like Wiggins.
01:38OK, like this is like he came out today.
01:41Here's what happened.
01:42And OK, that's what happened.
01:45Is there a massive cover up?
01:47Was Kyle on a 630 p.m. drunken rage?
01:53I mean, OK, maybe.
01:56I just don't know why.
01:57For me, this is no different, actually, than the Draymond thing.
02:00Why does our mind immediately go to these dramatic places?
02:05This isn't on Netflix.
02:06Ooh, the Warriors and Draymond are now at odds.
02:10And now the Warriors are going to stab him in the back.
02:13And Mike Dunleavy has taken control.
02:15And Kyle Shanahan, this is a massive cover up by the 49ers.
02:19I can't tell you you're wrong, but I just I'm having a hard time finding out why our minds would
02:25go there in these situations.
02:27For me, the reason why my mind goes there is because of the inconsistency of the portrayal of the incident.
02:35And initially it's, you know, she was going the other way and she made a wrong turn, an unsafe turn
02:40causing the crash.
02:42And then he says, no, actually, I dropped my phone and I drifted across.
02:46It was my fault.
02:47And so for me, if you have that wide of a berth between the initial investigation and what the driver
02:53actually says happened, that to me is it's not very efficient police work, to say the least.
02:59And I'm also fascinated by the lack of witnesses at 610 on a Tuesday night in Palo Alto.
03:06We don't know that there were a lack of witnesses, by the way.
03:09Right.
03:09There's not a normal situation where when there's an accident, if there are witnesses, that the media is immediately going
03:16to track those witnesses down so that they can be on the six o'clock news and tell the story
03:20of what they saw.
03:21Again, the only reason that that would happen is if there was some sort of criminal behavior or what have
03:29you.
03:29Now, I'm with you on the fact that it's odd that whatever this database is that people found last night
03:36or early this morning tells apparently an inaccurate story.
03:42But if this was a cover up, wouldn't Kyle pay the woman off and allow the cover up to continue
03:48rather than driving straight to work, calling David Lombardi, Matt Barrows, Matt Mayocco, Jennifer Lee Chan and everyone into his
03:56office so he can immediately say that report's wrong.
03:59I'm the one who totally screwed up.
04:02Why would he do that if this was some sort of a cover up?
04:05Because, you know, we're now two weeks removed and I'm not sure really what happened there.
04:11His story is his story and I believe it because I don't think he's dishonest, but you also have actual
04:17evidence if you went to the black box of the Tesla or if you, you know, if the woman involved,
04:23if she spoke to reporters or somebody who was there because the vehicles, I believe, were in the street for
04:29about 40 minutes because he gets transported to the hospital and then the investigation begins.
04:34And so it's a lot of time for looky-loos to come by and, you know, take a picture just
04:39because that's human nature.
04:40That's what we do.
04:41I know, but like even if what you're saying is true, someone very well could have done that.
04:46And that still may come out.
04:48That wouldn't lead to anything.
04:50What would that lead to?
04:51Yeah, here's two cars.
04:52They got in an accident.
04:54Right.
04:54The one who was at fault came forward as soon as he knew to come forward and said that was
04:57my fault.
04:58We saw the Matt Miller footage and that, I mean, I'm not trying to say that it looked like he
05:04intentionally wanted to crash, but his life was in a spiral and in a spot to where he just goes
05:09across the line and there's footage on that from the, was it a van or a truck or something?
05:14The truck that got hit.
05:15Right.
05:15And now knowing what's going on with Matt Miller over the last five to 10 years of his life, there's
05:21reason for concern.
05:23Yeah, you can draw conclusions.
05:24You can draw some conclusions.
05:25But when you see it and, you know, this reminds me a little bit of the Draymond Green Jordan Poole
05:30thing where a report comes out about a confrontation and I was thinking like two guys come together and maybe
05:36one of them slapped the other upside the head and then 12 hours later, it's like, oh, oh, wow.
05:41And all of a sudden things change because the video got leaked.
05:46And so, I mean, maybe somebody out there has got actual video because, you know, there's cameras just about everywhere
05:52in this world now.
05:52But how could cameras and video change the story of what he's already told, which is not a great story?
05:58Like Kyle, Kyle messed up.
06:00Right.
06:00And Kyle stepped forward today to say, I totally messed up.
06:03And I don't want this story out there that this other woman messed up.
06:06I don't want that out there.
06:07I messed up.
06:08Yeah, he could have been going faster than 20.
06:10And, you know, the things that I don't know, the things that actual video could show or, you know, the
06:16recordings from the Tesla, like he probably never hit the brake based on his account.
06:22It was very for the phone.
06:24And you actually pointed this out off air.
06:26Like the first thing he felt was the airbag blowing up.
06:28So probably was a no break accident because he's trying to get his phone.
06:32I would, I would think, I would think, but like anyway, and you know, I'm, this is a little bit
06:38of a weird conversation because I hate speculating about stuff like this.
06:42My mind continues to be exactly where it was all day yesterday.
06:47And from the moment we found out about this, I'm thankful that Kyle Shanahan and this unnamed 21-year-old
06:55female he hit, I am thankful that they are alive.
06:58I'm thankful that Kyle Shanahan has two eyes.
07:01I'm thankful that Kyle, it sounds like he's confident he's going to make a full recovery.
07:07That's kind of really the only place my mind goes.
07:10And if you want to call that naive, do your thing.
07:13I don't really care how anyone wants to label that.
07:15But I, I, I, it's, it's just, it's interesting to me that when you have an accident, I still don't
07:22understand why everybody feels entitled to all of the information.
07:26It's not entitlement.
07:27For me, it's a curiosity.
07:28Yeah.
07:29And that one, I'm not.
07:30I'm going to sleep tonight.
07:32I'm not pointing out you on that one.
07:33Yeah.
07:34As you said yesterday, you called it curiosity.
07:37I think we all have that.
07:38We're human beings.
07:39The entitlement of like, I should have known seven days ago, not, you know, three days ago.
07:44That's weird to me, but whatever, do your thing.
07:48But this idea that, that we get an accident, there are police on the scene.
07:54We've heard not a peep from authorities or from the other driver.
07:59And then the second something does come out about it, Kyle Shanahan calls reporters into his office to say, that's
08:06not what happened.
08:07Here's what did happen.
08:08I don't, I'm having a hard time with why minds would immediately go to, ooh, something bigger is at play
08:15here.
08:15The Niners are on a cover-up mission.
08:17I don't, I don't, like, I don't see it.
08:21Yeah.
08:21Am I being naive, maybe?
08:22I just, I don't know.
08:24I see the timeline of events from accident, 11 days, it comes out, which is fine.
08:30I mean, you want to protect it.
08:31Chris Sims knew about it pretty early on in the process and various reporters had the story, but they didn't
08:37have the right story.
08:38And so everyone coming after Tim Kawakami, like Mike Florio, check yourself, dude.
08:43Your partner's the one who had more of the details.
08:46And so Tim Kawakami, I think, said he had 15% of the story, so you're not going to go
08:51forward with it.
08:52And then finally the story comes out.
08:54And from Saturday till now, the story's changed a few different times.
08:59And I just see something where there's kind of dead spots.
09:02And I'm curious.
09:03Did the story change a few different times?
09:05How so?
09:06No one was at fault.
09:07And that was no story.
09:10Right.
09:10Well, the story was we're not, no more details are coming out.
09:13That's going to do it.
09:14That's that.
09:14And then this database comes out and it's like, ooh, it was her fault.
09:18She made an unsafe turn.
09:21No, she didn't.
09:22He actually went across the line.
09:24So the account has changed a number of different times, three different times in just two days.
09:29That to me is very curious.
09:31I think it went from no account to the first account.
09:33And when that account was wrong, he spoke to it.
09:36Right.
09:37So now it's a second account.
