00:00This is Daisy, a pregnant St. Bernard we rescued only three days ago.

00:04We'd hoped she was going to have an easy birth, but everything that could have gone wrong, did.

00:09Did she just give birth in the back of the car?

00:12You're doing good Daisy, well done.

00:15So this is the moment we picked up Daisy.

00:17She was a UK surrender, so luckily she was already used to life in her home.

00:21When we took her home, she was a little bit unsure,

00:23but it wasn't long until she started resting in the section we set up for her.

00:27We had to set up a section because we have four other dogs,

00:30and this is her meeting all of them.

00:33No.

00:34Good girl.

00:36Good girl.

00:38That's gone well.

00:39You alright Luna?

00:40It went really well, so we've never helped a dog give birth before.

00:43Me and Ella were so anxious, but luckily we had the help from another amazing foster

00:47who gave us everything we needed.

00:49We printed off a checklist with steps, bought a whole bunch of stuff from Amazon,

00:53and also had this sheet to help us track all the puppies.

00:55You'll see later on in the video how all of this stuff was nearly completely useless.

01:00Our dogs only had a small space in the house,

01:02and we felt like it was a bit unfair on them,

01:04but luckily we had massive help from our local dog walkers.

01:07They'd get taken on regular walks so they could relax when back at home.

01:12We made sure to feed Daisy regularly because she has a whole bunch of pups to feed,

01:16and we also found out how much of a slobber machine she is.

01:19Our Amazon stuff started arriving, so that meant I needed to start assembling.

01:23We were told to buy two of everything so that we had a failsafe.

01:27Daisy's cornered-off section of the house was not ready for her to give birth just yet,

01:30but me and Ella were about to transform this space.

01:35So, step one was to just give it a good hoovering clean.

01:40Step two is to put up her crate.

01:42This is where Daisy will be with her pups.

01:44Also, that was the idea.

01:46Step three is to put garbled down.

01:48This was so the tiny puppy's paws can't get trapped in the gaps at the bottom of the crate.

01:52Step four is to then put a heating blanket down so the pups can stay nice and warm.

01:57Daisy seemed to love her new space already, which was great.

02:00Step five, start setting up the stand, which was for the heat lamp.

02:05Step six, have a place where we can temporarily put puppies complete with a heating mat,

02:10which didn't work.

02:13Step seven, set up backup red light for heat.

02:16Thank good for the backups.

02:17And finally, step eight, this little thermometer to make sure the pups have enough heat.

02:23Wow, now everything is set up, Daisy needs to eat more food.

02:27Kobe is super jealous, and we have a designated dribble towel.

02:32The first night was an interesting one because we spotted something.

02:36Her back legs are wet.

02:38Good girl.

02:40We think her water may have broke.

02:43Yeah, you're going to be a good mama, aren't you?

02:46I'm not freaking out at all, Daisy.

02:50So, I felt that her back legs were wet, and I think her water broke.

02:54That means puppies could be due within the next few hours.

02:57You could see she was also starting to nest, which was a telltale sign.

03:01But, we had a problem.

03:03We were so stressed because the one main thing that we ordered that we couldn't afford to arrive late

03:07was her whelping pen.

03:08This is basically just an area where she can feed the puppies.

03:12And because she's so big, there is raised corners all around the edges so she can't crush and kill them.

03:17And ours was delayed.

03:18It was too late at night to go out and try and hand make one as well.

03:21But, we had to make do.

03:23And if the puppies came, well, the puppies came.

03:25We'd have to figure something out.

03:27It was at this point, our house looked like somebody had come in and trashed the place.

03:31But everything was set up and ready.

03:33We also had a bunch of towels ready too.

03:37Daisy was out like a light and this was the beginning of the overnight stretch.

03:41So, it's currently quarter to twelve.

03:44And this one is completely out.

03:48So, we're not really sure what to do now.

03:50We don't really want to go to sleep.

03:52We might take turns going to sleep.

03:54We don't really want to risk it and leave her.

03:56So, it looks like it's going to be a long night.

04:00We're going to offer Daisy some of what has been her favourite food.

04:04And literally, as we were preparing her food, this happened.

04:08Oh, that's the food?

04:09That means she's going into Luba.

04:11Does it?

04:12It's a sign that she could be going into Luba.

04:15Alright, so we're not going to offer Daisy her favourite food.

04:19What are the odds of that?

04:20As I'm filming it.

04:21Alright, we're going to get you cleaned up, Daisy.

04:22Hang on.

04:23So, Daisy was sick.

04:24But we did blur it.

04:25Not everybody wants to see that.

04:27We let Daisy into the garden and the fun continued.

04:31Alright, so I'm currently 25 past 12.

04:36Daisy's just been sick again.

04:38Good girl.

04:39So, I think I'm going to stay down here for the night.

04:43I think that's a good idea.

04:44You stay down here and I'll pick up in the morning.

04:50Okay, so it's currently 12.35.

04:53Daisy's asleep out in the hallway.

04:54I'm setting up my bed on the sofa.

04:56Because she's just been sick a few times, we think that she's gone into labour and could

05:01deliver puppies sort of within the next 12 hours.

05:05And so, obviously, we want to be prepared.

05:06So, I'm so tired.

05:08I'm going to try and get some sleep.

05:09Well, I'm a very light sleeper, so if I can hear Daisy making any noises, then I'm going

05:14to get up, wake her up, and then maybe start delivering some puppies.

05:20Let's see how it goes.

05:22So, I couldn't sleep.

05:23I was too anxious.

05:24I kept checking on Daisy.

05:26I'm only quarter past 12.

05:46I let Daisy out for regular toilet breaks, and at this point, I was told I'd need to

05:50keep an eye on her, even when outside, in case she tried to give birth out there.

05:54She wasn't drinking much, so I tried a different approach.

05:58You go, mama, you need to try and hydrate.

06:03No, who?

06:04To love, what's that?

06:08Daisy, what's that?

06:11No?

06:12Okay.

06:13I also just kept checking her for any sign she was going to give birth.

06:17Is her stomach contracting?

06:19Not yet.

06:21So, I was spending some time with Daisy.

06:23Please ignore the outfit.

06:25It was like 2.30 in the morning.

06:26I was feeling for any contractions.

06:28To be honest, wasn't entirely sure what I was even looking for.

06:31And then Daisy gets up, pushes past the little barrier we have, and throws up again.

06:36This time on the carpet.

06:37Thanks, Daisy.

06:38But it was at this point, I was starting to get a little worried.

06:41She had thrown up a lot by now, and it was just bile at this point.

06:44So, I called the emergency vets for some advice.

06:47Hello, I've got a pregnant dog here, and they said that RBC was our emergency vet college.

06:53Um, she's, I think, coming to labor because I think her water's broke, but she's been sick probably about nine

07:01times now.

07:02So, I just wanted to call to kind of get some advice since the sick that was okay.

07:07That was a very tired me, trying to explain the situation.

07:10They basically got me to check if Daisy was lactating, and she wasn't.

07:14So, she probably hasn't gone into labor yet.

07:16They also said her throwing up was fine, but we should pop into our local vets in the morning just

07:21for a general checkup.

07:22It was 3am at this point, and I was so ready for bed.

07:25I still stayed downstairs just in case, though.

07:30Ella then came to take my spot at about 4am.

07:33She changed out the pads in Daisy's crates because she had been sick in it,

07:37and when I came down at about 8am, Ella and all the dogs were dead asleep.

07:42But, it was the morning, which meant we had to take Daisy to the vets.

07:45We're running off about 4 hours sleep at this point, and still no puppies.

07:50And this is where we find out a lot more about Daisy.

07:53Her previous owner sent her medical history to the rescue we got her from.

07:56And it turns out, Daisy is only 3 years old, and this will be her 3rd litter.

08:01This is bad.

08:02Being a big dog, she should have her first litter at about 2 years old.

08:06But the fact she's on her 3rd in 3 years is just insane.

08:11She's never been able to enjoy her life.

08:12As soon as she turned 1, she was bred, and then bred every year after that.

08:17She should have at least an 18 month break in between litters.

08:20Back-to-back litters can cause health issues and shorten her lifespan.

08:24Her previous owner may not have known any better, but ultimately, it's still just as bad for Daisy.

08:29On top of all of that, she's very underweight, and had not been kept in good condition.

08:34Her claws had overgrown, her ears were borderline infected, she was dehydrated too.

08:39Her body's probably struggling to keep up with the back-to-back-to-back pregnancies.

08:43So the vets decided to keep her for the day, and put her on an IV drip to hydrate her,

08:48and run some blood tests.

08:49This was a bit of a disaster.

08:51We thought it was going to be a nice and simple birth for her, or at least, that's what her

08:55previous owner had said.

08:56Being such a big dog, and having to stay at the vets the entire day, this was not going to

09:01be cheap.

09:05Me and Ella were just exhausted, but it's not like we could rest.

09:09We still had our 3 other dogs to take out entire.

09:11So remember when I said the whelping pen was delayed, apparently it was delayed indefinitely.

09:16So we had to come up with a makeshift whelping pen.

09:19Me and Ella went to our local hardware store, picked out some planks of wood and a saw, and got

09:23to sawing.

09:24We managed to end up with this, which, not gonna lie, we were pretty proud of.

09:32This took so much longer than it should have.

09:34And before we knew it, it was time to pick Daisy up.

09:38So they gave us some sensitive food for her stomach, and after doing the blood tests, they found out she

09:44was low in calcium.

09:45Not alarmingly low, but low.

09:47This was bad news, because it meant that if and when she started feeding her puppies, it could deplete her

09:52body and send her into fits.

09:54And after another night on the sofa, we woke up to this.

09:59I've blurred it again because it's not very nice, but Daisy clearly was not well.

10:03So it's another trip to the vet.

10:05And they wanted to keep her all day again, and put her back on an IV drip to hydrate her,

10:09and do more blood tests.

10:11We went to pick Daisy up at around 6pm, and while we were waiting at the vets, they came out

10:15and told us Daisy had just given birth.

10:18We were shocked.

10:19The vets were closing in a couple of hours, and her calcium levels were still low.

10:22So we weren't comfortable taking her home.

10:24I felt like we could lose Daisy and the puppies, and I wasn't about to let that happen.

10:28As we were figuring things out, the vet came out and told us Daisy gave birth to another puppy.

10:33Now with two newborns, I called the emergency vets, hoping we could take her straight there, where she'd have help

10:39if anything happened.

10:40They agreed, but this meant driving Daisy, who was still giving birth, and her tiny puppies, 20 minutes in the

10:45back of a cold car.

10:46I didn't get much footage here.

10:48I was so focused on keeping Daisy safe.

10:49We loaded her up, praying the two tiny puppies would make it.

10:55And we made it, and the puppies are both still alive, thank God.

10:59Also, look how good Daisy is with us and her puppies.

11:02Bearing in mind, we rescued her only three days ago.

11:05We barely know each other.

11:06Take them out, she might instinctually do it.

11:10If you take them out.

11:11At this point, we were trying to just get the puppies on her.

11:14They really needed to feed.

11:15Good girl.

11:19Daisy, down, down, down.

11:21Daisy, down.

11:23Just put them around, she may lay down naturally.

11:26We instantly show our inexperience here.

11:29Newborn puppies are like homing missiles to finding the nipple, but we didn't know this yet, so we were literally

11:34trying to get the puppy to latch onto the nipple.

11:36It's fucking a bit there, isn't it?

11:41And then the vets gave us this setup for Daisy, and this is the new plan.

11:44The vets are going to be doing more tests on her, to see how dangerous her low calcium levels are.

11:49But, if they're okay, we've then got the all clear to take Daisy back to ours.

11:53Oh, well done, Daisy.

11:56So, obviously, at this point, we haven't even seen or helped her give birth yet.

12:01Then she did this.

12:02Well done.

12:17So, we also learnt that when she has her first contractions, she should give birth within an hour, but can

12:22wait up to two.

12:23If she's contracting for longer than two hours and hasn't given birth, she would need to see a vet.

12:27Luckily, we're already at a vets.

12:30Can you see it?

12:43When she gives birth, put the puppies in there.

12:47Got it.

12:48We were also told that the puppies currently feeding on her will help stimulate her to have more puppies.

12:53By the way, this is the first time we have done anything like this, and it had already gone so

12:58wrong.

12:58So, I'm sure me and Ella made loads of mistakes for the whole internet to see, but be kind, please.

13:03We're trying.

13:04So, we were busy trying to get the pups onto the nipple, and then, oh my god, it happened.

13:09Here you go.

13:22My initial guess was eight.

13:24So, the first thing we were told to do is to rub them until they were dry, and also until

13:28we hear a squeak.

13:29This is how we'll know if they're alive.

13:54Barely any contractions on that one, wasn't it?

14:03We're getting a squeak.

14:05So, we're on four.

14:08They've all found nipples.

14:10They're all munching away.

14:12Well done.

14:16Her belly's still looking big.

14:17I'm going to go ahead and guess another four are on the way.

14:22And now mum is stimulating them to go to the toilet.

14:26Yeah.

14:27I'm learning all about birth.

14:31And another one.

14:33I heard it smack in there.

14:35I need for it.

14:35Yeah, the way we went out.

14:37Number five.

15:18So the vet came to take her blood to do the additional tests.

15:21She did actually go for him, but I didn't film it because I was helping out.

15:24And you can see after, she got a bit protective of the pups.

15:28So we needed to regain her trust.

15:37Yeah, they're your puppies.

15:40You can't blame Daisy for telling the vet off.

15:42She's currently giving birth in a place that is completely unknown to her, probably quite

15:46uncomfortable, and someone is trying to jab her with a needle.

15:49I think I would have been pretty annoyed too.

15:55What about, get those out there?

16:08Look at this one's ears.

16:10It looks like, um, it doesn't look real.

16:14But it'll be good when we get home.

16:15And we can put them all under heat lamps and good girl, Daisy.

16:20We're going for number six.

16:22All right.

16:22So it is midnight.

16:24Daisy has been having contractions for about 40 minutes.

16:29We're just waiting for her to give birth to this one more puppy.

16:32And then we're going to take her home and she can be in her nice, peaceful, whelping area.

16:36Out of my tiredness, I forgot to mention her tests came back fine and her calcium levels

16:41should be all good to feed them.

16:44It looks so cute.

16:46And we're on number six.

16:49Whoa.

16:50There is a sixth there.

16:52I just had to help out and didn't have my tripod with me to record this one.

16:55So we're going to take her home in about five or 10 minutes.

17:00And all the stuff we have set up, she can finally go and use.

17:04And you can give birth in comfort.

17:06So Daisy is coming home.

17:08I went outside to warm the car up so the puppies would be warm for the journey.

17:12We placed her six puppies in a box and then it was time to go home.

17:15It was about a 30 minute drive.

17:18Is that your part?

17:19It has made a difference.

17:20You've got the heat in on.

17:21Yeah, it made a big difference.

17:22Good girl.

17:23All right, Daisy girl.

17:25Ready to go back, finish your journey at home.

17:27And whilst I was driving, she gives birth in the back of the car to another.

17:31I did get a little five second clip for you guys, but we had to get inside really

17:35quick and sort out puppy number seven.

17:37Oh yeah, it's really black.

17:41You can help.

17:45And our three dogs were going insane with the smell.

17:48But of course, we kept them far away from her.

17:58And now Daisy is in her whelping pen.

18:01Nice, dim light and so much comfier for her to give birth.

18:05Oh, yummy.

18:06We also found out that the only thing she would eat is ham slices.

18:10Not ideal, but the vet said it's better for her to eat that than nothing.

18:15She loves that.

18:17She's like a chicken.

18:22What's that sort of it?

18:23But even that, she would be put off really quickly.

18:27So after drinking lots of water, some pets for the good girl and more ham, I couldn't

18:32believe the time already.

18:35It's now 20 past two.

18:38It is out.

18:40You can see Daisy there.

18:41We're unsure if she's done.

18:44But it's been about an hour since her last puppy and no more contractions.

18:49Honestly, we were exhausted.

18:51This was our third day of pretty much no sleep and we were seriously feeling it.

18:55I don't even know how we've ended up back at hours with seven puppies.

18:59She hasn't even given birth in her own area yet.

19:02Now we're home, we can talk about how much this pregnancy has cost.

19:06£1,600 in vet bills, plus all the stuff we had to get on Amazon, it totaled in at around

19:13£2,500.

19:15Very painful and we did not expect half of these costs.

19:18But most importantly, Daisy and her pups are alive and healthy.

19:31And at 4am, Ella decided to get some rest and I said I would stay up.

19:35I felt confident enough to help deliver her puppies if she were to even have any more.

19:42I felt a real bond with Daisy, like we were in this together.

19:45We were starting to settle down for the night, feeding her lots of ham.

19:48She was a hungry mama.

19:50Oh my god.

19:52Alright, you know.

19:54You like the ham.

19:57And then...

19:58Okay, so it is currently quarter past four.

20:04And this one has just given birth to her eighth puppy.

20:07So I'm going to see if she wants any help.

20:10I was helping clean the puppy and waiting for the squeak.

20:13This is insane, by the way.

20:15She started giving birth at 6pm yesterday and it's now 4am.

20:21I moved the heat lamp because Daisy was directly under it and I didn't want her to overheat.

20:26She was exhausted, bless her.

20:28She's got so many puppies.

20:31It's normal to usually lose some puppies during birth.

20:33And given all that she's been through, we did not really expect a key pull.

20:37But we're 8 for 8.

20:39We haven't lost any.

20:40We were so happy.

20:41I really thought she was done.

20:438 puppies, but...

20:46Right, it's half six in the morning.

20:49And Daisy here has just delivered her ninth.

20:52Well done, girl.

20:54So somehow, there is...

20:579 puppies now.

21:00She's got one under her under the armpit.

21:03Oh my god, you can see how many puppies she has got.

21:09Wow.

21:11I think that's 12 hours she's been giving birth now.

21:149 pups.

21:16I'm going to lose count.

21:59They kind of looked like gerbils.

22:04And our golden retriever, Kobe, kept a safe distance.

22:07He is not happy about there being so many.

22:14that's because everything that could have gone wrong post-birth did.

22:17I know I've shown this clip before, but I promise next video, it will be explained.
