With fuel prices still uncertain, people are ditching the second car for two wheels. From September, electric cargo bikes will be added to the ACT government's 'Sustainable Household Scheme'. For many, the trade in has been far from a trade-off.

00:02What if your second car wasn't a car at all?
00:06It does the job of a second car. It carries up to 200 kilos.
00:09It has about a 100 kilometre range on a single charge.
00:13So everything I had to do in a car I can do on this thing.
00:17For Robert Knight, the cargo bike was perfect for school drop-offs, the daily commute
00:21and has become so much more than just transport.
00:24You park at places and people go, wow, check that out, that's awesome.
00:28I'm like, yeah, let me tell you about it.
00:30He crunched the numbers comparing five years of running a car and a bike,
00:35including rego and insurance.
00:36And with uncertainty over fuel prices, he says the change makes sense.
00:41It was a $16,000 a year cost to run the Tiguan
00:44and it was $1,200 cost per year to run the bike.
00:49And that's including the electricity, which is like 20 cents.
00:53It's no wonder bike shops are selling and servicing more of them.
00:56They can't be without it. They just drop it off while they're at work.
01:00We're seeing a lot of people more and more come in with cargo bikes.
01:03There are a lot of people riding those bikes and getting rid of one car in their house
01:09that probably wouldn't have done that with any other kind of bike.
01:12From September this year, the ACT Government are adding electric cargo bikes
01:16to the sustainable household scheme.
01:18Advocates say the greater the uptake, the more people will see it as a viable alternative.
01:23I'm not necessarily asking people to get out of their cars,
01:26but I'm really asking that we give people a choice to get out of their cars.
01:29It's awesome.
