00:00Chicago, this isn't just another hot week. It's the worst heat wave the city has seen in at least the
00:04last two years.
00:05Temperatures will climb into the upper 90s for multiple days, with AccuWeather real field temperatures reaching as high as 103
00:11on the hottest day.
00:12But what makes this heat especially dangerous isn't just how hot it gets, but how many days it lasts.
00:18We're forecasting a 15 on the AccuWeather Heat Wave Severity Index, which rates heat waves from minor to extreme based
00:24on both their intensity and duration.
00:26A 15 puts this heat wave on the upper end of the strong category, just shy of severe.
00:31That means the risk of heat-related illness, including heat stroke, goes up, especially if you don't have air conditioning
00:36or you're more sensitive to extreme heat.
00:38And don't expect much relief after sunset. Overnight lows will stay unusually warm, giving your body very little time to
00:45recover before another dangerously hot day.
00:48So drink plenty of water, limit your time outside during the hottest part of the afternoon.
00:52And if you don't have air conditioning, now is the time to make a plan for where you can cool
00:56off during the heat of the day.
