00:00In Malawi's capital, Ilongwe, drivers are struggling to fill up their tanks.
00:05People wait for hours for petrol that's more than doubled in price since last year.
00:10Government price hikes and the war in Iran have created a perfect storm for the landlocked African nation.
00:17This has greatly affected our business.
00:21As transporters in the country, our business, it goes hand in hand with the availability of diesel.
00:28Also, because our trucks, when the wheels are turning, that's when we are making money.
00:35Agriculture accounts for more than a third of Malawi's economy.
00:40Without reliable and affordable transportation, farmers can't get the fertilizer they need for their crops and can't get their crops
00:48to market.
00:49Some farmers are not able to bring their commodity to the town to sell because of the fuel is not
00:56available.
00:56So, so many challenges are there for the farmers.
01:01Daily life and business activity are increasingly disrupted by the lack of fuel.
01:07Transport companies say the shortage is already affecting their operations,
01:12slowing the movement of goods and threatening supply chains across the country.
01:19For the past three days, I've been moving from one queue to another in search of fuel.
01:25Sometimes, after staying in the queue the whole day, the fuel comes,
01:29only to be told around 3 a.m. that the fuel has run out.
01:34That's why for three days, I haven't made a single trip.
01:39With growing public debt, the government's options are limited.
01:43It's now said it will sell off precious gold reserves to keep the petrol flowing.
