Taraji P. Henson and Eryka Badu discussed the backlash they have received for their comments regarding R. Kelly to ESSENCE's senior entertainment editor Joi-Marie McKenzie.
Transcript
00:00You were in headlines recently for your comparison, seemingly R. Kelly to Harvey Weinstein, but
00:06I was sort of shocked to see how many people were so quick to cancel you, because you've
00:10been, you're not new to this, you're true to this. How did you feel about people canceling?
00:15Here's the deal, the people that said they were going to cancel me never liked me in
00:19the first place. So I don't count them. And when I sit down with people, they go, everybody
00:25loves you. I'm going, it's not true. It's not true. And I don't want to, it's hard
00:29to get every human on this planet earth to love you. It's just not going to happen.
00:34So I'm not, um, I don't live my life to make people happy or to make them like me. I live
00:40my truth. I know I'm a good person. I have a good heart. I have love in my heart. I'm
00:44all, I'm for all people. So if you don't see that, then you're not, you just, you don't
00:49love me anyway. So I don't, I don't waste time trying to get you over here on my side. It's
00:54just, it's just, that's just who you are. And don't project your stuff onto me. A lot
00:59of people project things, you know, you know, anything that I express is always a message
01:04of unconditional love. I would never ask anyone to feel the way I feel or see the way I see.
01:10But I also think I have the right to express the way I feel. And I think that we don't really
01:16have a lot of respect for the individual, you know, not on social media, you know, and
01:21maybe social media is not the place to discuss certain things. I learned that too. Sometimes
01:26it's best discussing those types of things at dinner with friends. Yeah. And just, it's
01:33all a learning process, you know, and I'm, I'm, like I said, used to being misunderstood,
01:38but I don't mind being a problem, uh, to, um, I'm, the problem that may lead to the solution
01:47at some point.
