00:00But an inch of snow in Atlanta is a big deal, so we don't want to ignore the fact that you are absolutely in on this in Atlanta.
00:06It's a nasty winter storm for you within an inch or so, very possible.
00:11And here's our map Saturday. You're in it.
00:13The heavier snow may be in Charlotte and Raleigh and up into Virginia Beach,
00:16but we do have significant problems there in North Georgia, too.
00:20It's the unofficial capital of the South, you could say, and we're going to be dealing with some snow.
00:24Here it comes. Let's take a look at this.
00:25Saturday, early in the morning, 8 a.m., snow picking up in Atlanta and Charlotte, across virtually all of North Carolina.
00:33Light snow at times at Virginia Beach, but you'll notice the accumulating stuff, it's kind of holding back until we get deeper into the day.
00:39That's when we really ramp up.
00:405 o'clock, this might be the height of the storm in Raleigh, still coming down heavily in Charlotte and across eastern North Carolina.
00:46It'll be a storm that some of you and your kids may never forget in Charlotte, North Carolina.
00:51This moves up to the northeast.
00:52It does clip southeast New England.
00:54Doesn't snow in Philly, no snow in New York.
00:57I don't think Hartford even sees anything out of this, but from Boston, you might see a coating to an inch, maybe a little more than that.
01:03Here, we're going to show you the forecast in a moment.
01:05But we are talking about what will become a bomb cyclone in our forecast feed we've been discussing.
01:11It's going to strengthen more than 24 millibars in 24 hours, and we were calculating maybe about 42 millibars in 24 hours.
01:18It's a pretty big deal.
01:19It's going to really ramp up, and the hard-hit impact zone, yes, Atlanta gets in on it, but during Saturday night, it pulls away from Atlanta.
01:28Snow is still falling heavily.
01:29Raleigh to Norfolk.
01:30Snowfall rates on Saturday night will begin to drop off in Charlotte.
01:34But look at this.
01:35This is our blizzard impact area.
01:37We are concerned about this becoming a blizzard.
01:39So we're looking at 35-mile-per-hour gusts of wind.
01:42We're looking at also the visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less because of snow in the air.
01:49And you've got to sustain that, maybe not sustained winds, but frequent gusts over 35 with, again, low visibility for about three hours or more for this to qualify as an official blizzard.
01:58That's the standard, and we may see that.
02:00We probably will see it in Virginia Beach and in Dare County, North Carolina.
02:03How about that?
02:04In Outer Banks, blizzard.
02:05That's a rarity.
02:06Eastern parts of North Carolina, far eastern Virginia, gusts of 50 to 70 miles per hour.
02:11This is a nasty storm.
02:12The interior, you're going to see some wind, gusts of 30 plus, but the really intense wind will be in areas generally near the water where there's less frictional effect.
02:21The water is where wind tends to be a little bit stronger for a number of reasons, but one of them is there's less friction over water than over land where you have vegetation and mountains and all kinds of stuff.
02:31So here we have our snowfall forecast for the mid-Atlantic states, looking at a widespread 6 to 12 inches here in the central and eastern part of the Carolinas.
02:39A very impressive 3 to 6 inch event in Columbia, South Carolina, Greenville, Spartansburg.
02:44Richmond, you're in the 1 to 3 inch zone.
02:46Atlanta, we have you real close to the 1 inch line there.
02:50And northeast of town, up into Alpharetta, probably 1 to 3 inches there for you.
02:54That's a big deal.
02:55Nashville, you're not exempt.
02:56Decoding 2 an inch up into the area around the Cumberland Plateau, 1 to 3 inches of snow.
03:00So you'll notice D.C. not included in the snow zone.
03:04So here's Charlotte's winter cast, kind of picking up, I showed you the Virginia Beach one right after Tony's story.
03:09Here we have the 6 to 10 inch Charlotte forecast.
03:11That's a big deal.
03:13And it may become the heaviest snow in decades here in Charlotte.
03:17We had a 3 plus inch event back in 2018.
03:20We had, I think it was, what, about an 8 inch event in Raleigh in 2018.
03:26But we may exceed that here with this one in some of these spots.
03:30Here's the map for the northeast.
03:31And you're noticing Boston less than an inch.
03:34We do have 3 to 6 inches possible for Cape Cod.
03:37But, again, the bigger deal is going to be way offshore.
03:40And Nova Scotia gets a bit slammed by this one.
03:43We remain very, very cold.
03:45A frigid time out there behind this storm.
03:48So that lake effect snow that's been moving through Chicago and now kind of drifting a little farther west at times, more diffuse band, that's a big story.
03:56We heard earlier off and on from Ari and Bernie with our Big Three this evening about how we're going to be dealing with persistent cold there in the north central U.S.
04:05But the northeast is locked into the cold as well.
