00:00Well, thank you.
00:05Thank you for being here and making this great show,
00:07although I was sad that Joey Pants,
00:09one of my favorite actors,
00:10is that it kind of sucks in the MCU.
00:12So that I'm wrapping my head around still.
00:15This show created jobs in LA.
00:17You can see it on the screen.
00:20People say, it's hard to shoot in LA.
00:21It's expensive, permits.
00:23How did you guys find shooting in LA?
00:25Oh, I thought it was absolutely, absolutely perfect.
00:27Because, I mean, that's the landscape.
00:30That we inhabit in the series.
00:33That is the dream environment.
00:35And to be filming there for us was perfect, perfect.
00:40My first feature I shot in Los Angeles.
00:45For $60,000.
00:47So it can't be that hard to shoot in LA.
00:50Dustin, this kind of feels like you going back to .
00:55Indie roots, right?
00:56I mean, you and Andrew kind of created something
00:57that feels like a cool indie dramedy.
01:00I mean.
01:00You're making some of the biggest movies
01:02in the world right now.
01:03But, so is that something you.
01:05You know, you pitched Marvel.
01:06Let's make this small.
01:07What was the pitch for you guys?
01:09Uh.
01:10Our pitch really was character first.
01:14I.
01:15I think that the.
01:16When people say indie style.
01:19Um.
01:20It typically is an aesthetic that is created to serve the.
01:25The.
01:25Performers.
01:26Because.
01:27When you don't have a lot of money.
01:28That is.
01:29That.
01:30That.
01:30That is your.
01:31You know.
01:32Your big explosions.
01:33You don't get.
01:34Your VFX.
01:35You don't get.
01:35But what you can get.
01:36Is capture.
01:37A live.
01:38Performances.
01:39That are surprising.
01:40Um.
01:41The aesthetic.
01:42Is kind of built around.
01:44Being able.
01:45To.
01:46To.
01:47To.
01:49To.
01:50To.
01:51To.
01:52To.

01:53To.
01:54To.
01:55To.
01:56To.
01:57To.
01:58To.
01:59To.
02:00To.
02:01To.

02:05To.
02:06To.
02:07To.
02:08To.
02:09To.
02:10To.
02:11To.
02:12To.
02:13To.
02:14To. To.
01:50that can move nimbly, and oftentimes that means, you know.
01:55Sometimes we're going hand-held.
01:56Sometimes we just keep rolling and go through a .
02:00A few takes, so you can let amazing actors like Sir Ben and Yai.
02:05You know, just go.
02:08One of the real superpowers of this show...
02:10is the insane chemistry that these two men have, Yai and Sir Ben.
02:16I'd love to hear your origin story of this relationship.
02:18Do you remember when you first met?
02:20When did you realize, you know, this is a guy that I can really riff off of?
02:25And trust on the screen.
02:27How did you grow that relationship?
02:30How did you let my colleague answer that?
02:34Man, it was...
02:35It was really an absolute pleasure working with Sir Ben.
02:38We had a conversation earlier.
02:40a brief introduction of a conversation.
02:43And from what I learned about that...
02:45was that he had a respect for the craft.
02:48Just an absolute...
02:50respect for acting.
02:51That's what I love so much about his...
02:53about observing his process.
02:55He respected himself.
02:56He respected his space.
02:58And he, from the very beginning...
03:00he appreciated the words.
03:02I have a similar...
03:04I have a similar...
03:05appreciation for the work.
03:06And really that's what...
03:07that's what...
03:08that's what you see on screen.
03:09It's really...
03:10two actors...
03:11having an appreciation for each other's craft.
03:13And...
03:14I think...
03:15when you said...
03:16within the last couple of days...
03:17that we...
03:18that we discovered each other...
03:19Absolutely.
03:20Yeah.
03:20that was really what the process was about.
03:21We...
03:22we discovered each other...
03:23as...
03:24as friends between takes...
03:25and then we discovered...
03:26the relationship between the characters...
03:28whilst the camera was turning.
03:30Absolutely.
03:31And I do think...
03:32Destin...
03:33that the camera...
03:34I think you would agree...
03:35The camera...
03:35loves...
03:36filming people...
03:39discovering one another.
03:40rather than...
03:41an over-familiarity.
03:43And...
03:44both Yaya and...
03:45myself...
03:46are...
03:47committed to our craft...
03:48so deeply...
03:49that...
03:50our private...
03:51everything...
03:52is...
03:53subservient to that...
03:54in...
03:55in a decent way, I mean.
03:55so that our...
03:56I don't think...
03:57either of us...
03:58have very demanding...
03:59crazy social lives...
04:00at all.
04:00no...
04:01no...
04:02what...
04:03so...
04:04with...
04:05with the...
04:05greatest affection...
04:06and respect...
04:07in the world...
04:08for my colleague...
04:09we did not hang out.
04:10that's...
04:11that's...
04:12what we did not do...
04:13what we did...
04:14was...
04:15discovery...
04:15with each other...
04:16while...
04:17while Destin's...
04:18camera...
04:19was rolling...
04:20and while we...
04:20savored...
04:21the wonderful...
04:22writing...
04:23of...
04:24of Andrew.
04:25and...
04:26our respect...
04:27for the words...
04:28was...
04:29met...
04:30by...
04:30by your...
04:31affection...
04:32for the characters...
04:33and your...
04:34and the beautiful way...
04:35you crafted the...
04:35scripts...
04:36we just...
04:37poured our energy...
04:38into your words...
04:40I...
04:41I actually recall...
04:42right after...
04:43the first...
04:44phone conversation...
04:45that you two had...
04:46um...
04:47because I was a bit...
04:48nervous for Yaya...
04:49for you...
04:50for that first...
04:50conversation...
04:51you know...
04:52I was telling Yaya...
04:53like...
04:54Sir Ben...
04:55is the...
04:55the...
04:56the...
04:57loveliest...
04:58human...
04:59the most...
05:00gentle...
05:00gentleman...
05:01on set...
05:02but...
05:03in the beginning...
05:04he likes to...
05:05make...
05:05sure...
05:06that he is working...
05:07with people...
05:08who are going to...
05:09who are going to be...
05:10as...
05:10dedicated as he is...
05:11um...
05:11and...
05:12so...
05:13you know...
05:14I kind of...
05:14loosely....
05:15told Yaya just be prepared
05:17and then
05:18they had their
05:20conversation and I got on the phone
05:21with Yaya and he said
05:25you didn't tell me
05:26how what that was going to be like
05:30and I was like
05:31I tried to tell you
05:32and you did not tell me
05:33but
05:34but
05:35Yaya's credit
05:35he was
05:36he
05:37he did not
05:38buckle
05:39with
05:40intimidation
05:40he said
05:41I
05:42I
05:42see
05:43what Sir Ben is like
05:45and I like it
05:46and so
05:47so he said
05:48he said
05:49I am going to
05:50be ready
05:50the next time I see him
05:51I am going to be ready
05:52man you have
05:54a great
05:55that's exactly what happened
05:57man
05:57that's exactly what happened
06:00it was like a fight
06:01whatever happened
06:02you lit a fire
06:04under him
06:04so
06:05so then
06:05I remember
06:06when that first table read came
06:07first table read
06:08Yaya was off book
06:10and just like ready to go
06:11yeah
06:12and Sir Ben was just reading
06:13he was just reading
06:15the lines
06:15and then I was like
06:16oh yeah that's right
06:16you just gotta read
06:20I remember that
06:21but there is nothing wrong
06:24with having high
06:24experience
06:25expectations of one's colleagues
06:26and I had very high
06:27expectations of you
06:28and that's a compliment
06:29absolutely
06:30that we pay to each other
06:30continually
06:31we're having work
06:32Andrew
06:32this crowd
06:34I
06:35I could tell
06:35was really appreciating
06:36some of the
06:37inside references
06:38to the entertainment industry
06:40did you have a dial
06:42of
06:42of how far to go
06:44you know I'm thinking
06:44of
06:45about
06:45what I thought
06:46was masterfully done
06:47was
06:47Yaya meeting
06:48Joey Pants
06:49talking about
06:50about the matrix
06:50Joey Pants
06:51saying
06:52I would be a knight
06:53if I were British
06:53to Trevor
06:55that was masterfully done
06:56do you have a dial
06:57of how meta to go
06:58how do you do that
06:59you know
07:00I think there's a lot
07:00of concern
07:01often about
07:02doing a show
07:02about the entertainment
07:03industry
07:04that it's going to feel
07:05too inside
07:05everybody who works
07:07in this town
07:07feels like
07:08well
07:08we get this
07:10we're gonna
07:10we think it's funny
07:11will the rest of the world
07:13understand it
07:14but
07:15I think the approach
07:15was
07:16to use
07:17all the
07:17lingo
07:18or inside stuff
07:19as
07:19spec
07:19you
07:20specificity
07:20to create
07:21really a story
07:23about
07:23somebody
07:24that anyone
07:25can relate to
07:25somebody
07:25who's got a big dream
07:27who's doing
07:28whatever they can
07:28to chase it
07:29and I feel like
07:29that
07:30that's something
07:30that anyone
07:30can tap into
07:31and whether
07:32he happened
07:33to be an actor
07:33or doing something else
07:34you want
07:35the world around him
07:36to feel real
07:36and believable
07:38I mean
07:38that was
07:39the goal
07:39was
07:40to create
07:40a grounded
07:41different
07:42kind of show
07:43for Marvel
07:43and that's
07:44what they wanted
07:44for
07:45from the beginning
07:45which was just amazing
07:46that everyone
07:46from the start
07:47wanted that
07:48from us
07:49which was lovely
07:50and we talk about
07:51it being different
07:52it is
07:53there's
07:53melancholy
07:54to this show
07:55you know
07:55these guys
07:55are lonely
07:56and they find
07:56each other
07:57did Marvel
07:58say
07:59yeah let's
07:59go
08:00let's go
08:00melancholy
08:00I mean
08:00did they
08:01embrace that
08:02not in those words
08:03Kevin Feige
08:05didn't say
08:06I want melancholy
08:06more melancholy
08:08Andrew
08:08I mean
08:10to me
08:10the thing
08:11that's
08:12the
08:13the trick
08:13is
08:14these
08:15these
08:15two
08:16characters
08:16are
08:17selfish
08:18and narcissists
08:19and
08:20but we still
08:21have to like
08:21them enough
08:22and part
08:22of what
08:23makes
08:23you connect
08:24with them
08:24is that
08:25loneliness
08:25is that
08:26melancholy
08:26they're
08:27lost
08:28and they
08:28care
08:29and
08:29you know
08:30getting to work
08:32with this group
08:33we've
08:33never
08:33we've never
08:33gotten to do
08:34a Q&A
08:34together
08:35this is the
08:35first time
08:35the four
08:35of us
08:36have gotten
08:36this
08:36but
08:36these
08:37are all
08:38storytelling
08:38that's
08:38the
08:39that's
08:39the
08:39thing
08:39I learned
08:40more than
08:41anything
08:41from this
08:41product
08:41progress
08:42process
08:43and this
08:43project
08:44is that
08:44everybody
08:46who's
08:46good at
08:46this
08:47job
08:47whether
08:47they

15:31Midnight Cowboy I could watch that where did why Midnight Cowboy
15:36and was that expensive to to license I don't know if it was expensive
15:41honestly we had to get permission from anybody you see in that film so
15:46Justin Huffman etc signed off on us using it but that was the first image
15:51that sort of came to me when I first met with Brian Gay and Destin to talk about
15:56this
15:56project was I thought of these two as outsiders I thought of Midnight Cowboy
16:01as this mismatched pair it's a relationship that has some
16:06underneath some underlying things there's some secrets to it rats I was
16:10trying to get one
16:11over on Joe Buck Joe Buck has big dreams and it's a about a friendship that
16:16movies about a friendship and that was a real inspiration I was so glad we were
16:21able to use
16:21and I and to me watching them as you're saying watch that movie I I could
16:25watch that
16:26be the whole movie I wouldn't be very good

17:11I would go to eat the wedge salad, and I.
17:16I can still hear the crunch of that lettuce.
17:21And my mouth, and I can feel the way that.
17:26That, you know, that naivete, that eagerness.
17:31The optimism that I felt.
17:36When I first moved to Los Angeles.
17:38Even though I was living in an apartment.
17:41That I swear is almost exactly like Simon's apartment.
17:46This one bedroom apartment in Echo Park.
17:49Where I made my first.

17:52Where I wrote my second feature.
17:54Where I lived on Top Ramen.
17:56And never cleaned that place.

18:11She came over to that house before we went on the date.
18:14And now she's my wife.
18:15I'm so.
18:16So.
18:16So much happened in that time.
18:17You know.
18:23How many hours.
18:24Do you shut down takes for that?
18:26It was a full day. I think they were actually closed at the time. I don't know if they're back up and running.
18:31But that restaurant's been off and on for a little while.
18:34Yeah, it was the sad reality.
18:36Because a lot of the places that we were able to shoot at were functioning at the time.
18:41And are not functioning now.
18:46You did go down for the strike for a while.
18:49Did you, I mean, I guess you couldn't write.
18:51But maybe as a filmmaker, did you get to think about stuff?
18:56You know, that improved the rest of the season.
18:58Or how did that affect?
18:59Marvel got to think about stuff.
19:01Marvel had, we had shot about half of the show at that point.
19:05So there were cuts for the first four.
19:06And they spent those strike months looking, thinking about it internally.
19:11And writing pages and pages of notes that was like, for when we came back, that was like this.
19:16But it was helpful in some ways.
19:20No.
19:21It's not just because Marvel's standing right over there.
19:26But it was also just a scary time.
19:30I mean, it was a scary time for everybody.
19:31It was, I remember being here at the DGA, going to...
19:36WGA meetings where there was, you know, people talking about whether we were going to strike or not.
19:41And then going back to set and having people on set come up to you and being like, what's going to happen?
19:46Are we going to go on strike?
19:47And thinking, oh, God, I don't think...
19:49I was the eternal optimist that some...
19:51Somehow it wasn't going to happen.
19:52And then, you know, it did.
19:54But we made it through, you know.
19:56Which is the good news.
19:58The thing to remember also about Marvel and, you know, Brian...
20:01Brian Gay is here and I don't know if any of our other producers are here is...
20:06You know, a lot of them went to film school.
20:08The people who work there are movie lovers.
20:11They adored this show.
20:16And...
20:16And if you, you know, if we all knew what was happening behind the scenes during that time...
20:21A lot of shows were being canceled.
20:23We were halfway through ours.
20:25You know, it could have been a text.
20:26It's right off for Disney.
20:28But I know for a fact that the people...
20:31Who were producing this show, like Brian and all of our amazing team...
20:36Who were fighting their asses off to make sure that we came back and finished this...
20:41Weird, melancholy show that, you know, was a big...
20:46A big swing for them.
20:47So I'm very appreciative of everyone there.
20:50Well...
20:51Thank you for being here and making this great show and sharing this with us.
20:55We appreciate it.
20:56And thank you all.
