00:00The 76th annual Golden Globe Awards kicked off Sunday with hosts Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh,
00:05who is a nominee herself for Killing Eve, taking to the stage to kick off festivities
00:09and joking that they were the only two people left to host that haven't been caught
00:12saying something offensive. Of course, this was a thinly veiled reference to the Oscar
00:16search for a new host since Kevin Hart stepped down from the role after past
00:20homophobic tweets penned by the comedian resurfaced. Samberg took the lighthearted
00:24dig one step further saying,
00:26We're going to have some fun, give out some awards, and one lucky audience member
00:30will host the Oscars. The emcees of the prestigious event largely avoided getting
00:34too political and instead mentioned some of the nominees of the night, including
00:37First Man, with Oh joking that the title of the movie also described Hollywood's
00:41hiring habits for directors. Rami Malek also got a mention for his critically acclaimed
00:45turn as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, with special attention
00:49being paid to the teeth he had to wear for the role. Samberg joked that it must have
00:53been quite the process getting permission from Freddie's family
00:56to exhume his body in order to procure said choppers, before Oh whispered in his
00:59ear that they were in fact prosthetics. The pair then continued their welcome monologue
01:03by making reference to the fact that Jim Carrey, who was nominated for his Showtime
01:07TV series Kidding, was sitting in the film seating section and asked the comedian to
01:11vacate his seat. Responded Carrey,
01:13should I take my dinner? After a comedic bit during which Samberg stole Oh's lines from the
01:18prompter, the actress, the first Asian-Canadian to host the awards show, then took a moment to
01:23acknowledge the powerful changes in representation which have been sweeping the entertainment
01:26industry.
01:27I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight, to look out onto this audience and
01:31witness this moment of change, an emotional Oh said.
01:34And I'm not fooling myself. I'm not fooling myself. Next year could be different. But right now,
01:38this moment is real. Trust me, it's real. Because I see you, and I see you all these faces of changes.
01:44And now, so will everyone else.
01:46The duo then welcomed Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper on stage to present the first award of the night,
01:50best actor in a TV comedy, with the nod going to Michael Douglas for the Kaminsky method.
