00:20researchers have found the numbers have become unsustainable

00:32It could also cause local die-offs of trees and then birds and create fuel for bushfires.
00:38Researchers say management approaches like culling or moving koalas raises ethical concerns.

00:53Their solution? To catch and inject female koalas with hormones
00:57that make them infertile.
01:00Modelling shows a need to target 22% of the female population over 25 years to make a difference.
01:07So we have a real opportunity in South Australia to do the right thing.
01:10Keep koalas from going extinct.
01:13To sterilise the mums and reduce the number of little babies like this being born,
01:18it will cost $34 million over the next 25 years.
01:23It's a cost that, for now, the South Australian Government isn't willing to pay.
01:28So the Department continue to monitor the populations,
01:31but there is no current plan for those types of management tools at present.
01:35The researchers say, without funding, the koala population will continue to climb.
