Development work on a regional railway line in the North East has received a significant boost after being backed by the Government. The Leamside Line is set to be restored as part of the Northern Powerhouse Rail initiative. Some have said that restoration of the line could provide train links for over one hundred thousand people in the North East.

00:06benefits to cities along the so-called M62 corridor, linking Liverpool, Manchester and
00:11Leeds, with improved connections also planned for Bradford, York and Sheffield.
00:17Ministers have also pledged better services for Newcastle, alongside a commitment to work
00:21with the North East Combined Authority on restoring the Leamside line.
00:26The disused route through County Durham, Sunderland and Gateshead has for several years been
00:31one of the key demands of business and political leaders in the region who argue it is vital
00:36to economic growth.
00:38The North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness, has already committed to developing plans to use the northern
00:42section of the line to extend the Tynanwea Metro to Washington by 2033.
00:50Transport leaders, however, are pushing for the full restoration of the route.
00:54That would allow for new time-to-tease services and would ease pressure on the congested East
01:00Coast Mainline by diverting freight trains onto an alternative route.
01:05The project could also lead new stations to occur in communities including Penshaw, Fence
01:11Houses, West Rainton, Belmont and Chincliffe, and unlock land for the construction of 10,000
01:17homes.
01:18Ministers are expected to confirm on Wednesday that work on reopening the Leamside line will
01:22progress alongside Northern Powerhouse Rail with the possibility that the scheme could be
01:26delivered sooner than other elements of the project.
